Now Ronnie, I want to know--what was the most mortifying thing about it all? Was it their pathetic excuses for "dancing?"

Don't tell me you've never seen your girlfriend dance.

hey, at least i actually get out there, jump around and actually move my entire body. i don't just stand on something tall and wave my arms. i never claimed to be some sort of professional dancer, i just like to actually move to music. i may not be good, but i certainly have fun, sweat my ass off and don't give a flying fuck what anyone around me thinks about it.

2% food tax starts today in AZ. This was imposed to save over 500 police and firefighter jobs.

http://www.azfamily.com/outbound-feeds/yahoo-news/2-Phoenix-food-tax-kicks-in-today-89681892.html

It's worth noting this could be changed in the next several months of budget discussions. Voters are continuously being asked for their input on the budget as well. So write, call and be heard.

Who's in for First Friday? (this is my monthly post showing interest only to end up not making it tomorrow)

what time would a subheadliner take the stage at rhythm room normally?

faxman75
04-01-2010, 10:11 AM
From my experience things generally start a bit later at Rhythm Room. It can be pretty random though. Doors at 7:30 tells me you aren't getting music until maybe 8:30 or later. Meaning busdriver could be in the 10pm hour. Just a prediction though.

that'd be about right for one of his type of shows though. when he headlined at the last 3 shows i've seen, he went on at midnight.

so 10p sounds about right. would that sound right for rhythm room? headliner at about 1130-midnight and go til 130-2a? i've never been to rhythm room, so not sure how they handle their set times...or how late they like to run shows.

mountmccabe
04-01-2010, 11:59 AM
I think I've been to only one show at the Rhythm Room that went past 12:30 am, a SxSW festival-type show that had like 8 artists performing.

Also Deer Tick's probably the only band I've seen there that's played ~2 hours. I'd consider an hour and a half a long show there.

Also 7:30 doors says to me that Happy Chichester would probably start 8-8:30 and go half an hour to 45 minutes; Busdriver would start 9-9:40 and go for 45 minutes to maybe an hour.

Things could be pushed back and scrunched up if the artists don't actually need that long of a set break but, still, if I wanted to catch Busdriver I'd show up before 9 pm.

faxman75
04-01-2010, 12:05 PM
The datarock show I attended earlier this year went past midnight. The opener didn't go on until around 10pm even though doors were at 8. I was pissed that night sitting around forever. The delays seemed to be due to the band smoking and socializing for as long as possible. I even heard them outside at one point debate starting or having another beer and they opted for another beer.

St. Vincent on the other hand was very prompt and didn't get anywhere near the midnight hour.

sin213
04-01-2010, 01:57 PM
yeah, i hate getting to shows too early and having to stand around for hours listening to crappy openers. every once in a while i'll be impressed by an opener and was glad i got there early...but that is very rare. plus, i hate paying $3 for water or $5 for beer for a few hours...

i'll probably plan to get down to that show by about 830 or so. at worst, we'll be sittin around for 1.5 hrs or will walk in on him already in progress.

Rhythm Room has free self serve water dispensers. And if you can/want to drink PBR, $2 cans. They do have draft beer including Kiltlifter and, I think, Guinness.

Also who wants to bet me a (non-Coachella) beer that Busdriver goes on before 9:45?

I'm somewhat new to Phoenix and was wondering if the Rhythm Room is an alright venue. It's my berfday tomorrow and I was thinkin' about checkin out RJD2 there. Does it get pretty crowded, drinks spendy?
Or is there anything else happening on Easter Sunday?

Rhythm Room is kind of a dive bar...I've never been there for a "real show" though. I shot some stuff for a blues documentary or something. Mt Mcabe and Aligator Boogaloo are your Rhythm Room experts, they'll chime in here at some point.

mountmccabe
04-04-2010, 10:25 AM
Haha, I'd consider Rhythm Room one of the least dive-y venues in Phoenix. The crowd depends on who's playing; the place holds 350 and St Vincent will sold it out but many shows do not (sorry, can't think of any recent examples.) The drinks are quite typical for Phoenix, maybe a little on the cheaper side.

I'd probably call it my favorite venue in Phoenix but that depends on what you're lookin' for.

RR has a dive-y feel (I think it's by design) but definitely not a dive-y crowd. I would call the drinks cheaper than most. Best venue in the area since Nita's closed years ago.

I really like the size of Rhythm Room; some bands play there that would draw a much larger/more rabid crowd in any city other than Phoenix, so the people there tend to be very interested/involved in the show rather than passive bystanders.

M Sparks
04-04-2010, 11:16 AM
Haha, I'd consider Rhythm Room one of the least dive-y venues in Phoenix.

Well, it's not The Clubhouse, but it's also not going to be confused for some snooty Scottsdale club.

But I haven't been there in 5 years, and it was just some shitty local blues band with about 10 people in the crowd, so my viewpoint was very different.

I've been to some awesome shows at the Rhythm Room lately, as well as some not so great. The sound can be on point or way off. And the drinks are on par to less expensive than other venues. $1.50 PBRs and Schlitz can't be beat at a show.

I purchased some of this herbal insence stuff yesterday at the head shop next door to Yucca. They had tons of varieties. The one I heard about on the news is called K2 but I went with something called Mojo. It's basically a bunch of herbs and it smells and tastes nothing like pot. It was $40 for 3 grams and honestly I don't have anything great to report. I only smoked a bong full and it was alright but you should all know it doesn't even come close to the power of the Deezy. I sprinkled some in with some deezy before bed and that was kind of interesting. I think I woke up really fucked up in the middle of the night. For those of you who like Salvia they also sell that stuff at the head shop next to yucca. I'm undecided on whether or not i'll try other brands of this herbal synthetic pot or incense or whatever the fuck they call it but so far I wouldn't recommend it for anything more than a mixer.
I also thought it was interesting that the packaging read "not for sale in the USA". Upon further internet research many of the sites have warning that read "not for human consumption" as well. The reviews on this stuff are far and few between and the guy who runs the head shop said he sells quite a bit of it. A news report I saw included frustrated cops who don't have a field test kit for it and don't see it as possible since each brand changes up the herbs and none of them contain actual thc.

I was going to go to Aura Saturday, because Tree is into Bellydance and Poi and stuff like that. But it turns out she's not going to be here. So now I'm trying to decide between Aura and Obscura. I still have an invite out to a friend for Aura...if she bails, I'll probably go to Obscura.

I think this is the event Ivy was telling me about, Tomas. Ivy, it's called Aura right? And its off of broadway and hardy i think.

I have been to Diamondback games last season. I think they had $2 beers and food specials because of the recession, but only at certain food stands. Don't know if they kept those specials this season.

I heard on the radio today there's an all-you-can-eat section. $30 gets you unlimited hot dogs, popcorn, peanuts and soda. Nothing like a side of gluttony to go with America's past time.

Yeah, it's behind Bite Me Subs in the dance studio. Supposed to be really fun, but I don't know if I'm up for going stag and sober. I kinda want to smoke a hookah though. Never have.

So, Aura= Ivy, Amyzzz & Jacob, other Amy, maybe Micah? Plus Bellydancers. Nom Nom. So, boobs...but no booze.

Obscura= Tomas and a bunch of other dirty hipsters ;) . But cheap drinks.

I made it to the Rhythm Room on Sunday for Happy Chichester/Busdriver/RJD2. Overall a great show, but between this one and St. Vincent, their sound is below par for me. On Sunday, Busdriver's mic kept on cutting in and out, he would have to hold it then would get into the rap, take his hand off, then it would cut out again - took them a while to replace it too.

Happy Chichester being the opener was ok, full of energy but seems like he is the jack of many instruments but master of none. His vocals were also painful at times with held notes. Again for an opener, he was entertaining but I did not like seeing that he was also in the RJD2 band on keys and also disappointingly on backup vocals.

RJD2s set started off with RJ coming out in a rhinestone studded jumpsuit, a welders mask talking through a Donnie Darko rabbit type voice, and a korg padkontrol attached to his groin which was also free to spin around. He did some short sample jams on that padkontrol and then jumped right into a 3 turntable/mpc set. I loved the balance between his newer 2 albums and the older stuff we love (Deadringer, Since We Last Spoke, etc). The dj set lasted for about 25 minutes, then the band joined him and they jumped into third hand material and eventually some Colossus. It also took the staff a while and multiple mic changes to finally get RJ's VOX amp hooked up while they were playing. Towards the end of the show, RJ threw back on the studded jumpsuit and mask with the padKontrol and jumped in the front of the crowd while playing samples along with the current track, can't remember off hand what the track was though.

I took a couple of videos with my Flip MinoHD and also recorded Busdriver's full set and RJD2's full set if anyone's interested. I might need to eq it a bit to add back in some bass, but overall it turned out quite well for being front and center.

Anyone else make it out to the show?

So I use Valley Metro Express Route 540 to get from Ahwatukee to downtown Phoenix every day during the week for work. I love it, I ride my bike down the road, pop my headphones in, look up stuff on my iPhone and generally zone out for the 30 minute ride to work. I get to keep my car garaged all day, buy gas like once a month, and help reduce air pollution. It can't be beat. The Route starts in Chandler and heads west through South Tempe, around the Warner-Elliot loop, then jumps on I-10 to downtown.

Due to funding cuts, Chandler has proposed getting rid of their portion of the route. I went to a City of Phoenix Transit Dept Community Outreach Meeting earlier in the week where Transit staff were on hand to summarize the cuts and answer any questions. The City of Phoenix has proposed to keep their portion of the route, but nothing is set in stone. The Transit staff at the meeting said to make sure colleagues, friends, family, whoever should go online and take the City of Phoenix transit survey and make sure to reference keeping the 540 in the comments section (1c) because the Phoenix City Council is going to analyze the results to determine where to make the cuts. So if you have some time, please take the brief survey, link below, and ask to keep the 540. Thanks!

http://www.phoenix.gov/publictransit/svtransit.html

...and the survey is open to everyone, not just City of Phoenix residents.

i was thinking it wouldn't start til 8...but that is just a guess. i don't go to many us airways shows...but always thought they delayed a little bit from the printed start time.

I'm going with my pregnant wife so I don't know if I should get there early so we don't have to fight for our seats or if we should try and get there right before the bands start for her comfort...I think we're leaving our house about 6:45pm to head down there.

Everyone going to Muse, head over to the District at the Sheraton after the show on the NW corner of 3rd St and Van Buren, reverse happy hour with cheap drinks and incredible dj action. See you there...maybe.

I can probably get you to PHX on a buddy pass but I can't get you into Palm Springs-flights are full. You'd have to hitch a ride with someone here.

Look at the awesome on you!

Haha, nice to meet you Dylan.

On a side note, I just read that Cheap Thrills MGMT Congratulations party was moved to Philthy Phil's, which is now called Rip's Ales and Cocktails, and that's where Obscura is at tonight. So is there a somewhat Cheap Thrills/Obscura collaborative night at Rip's tonight? I don't know but I am sure it will be fun. Come down if you aren't going to Aura. Rip's is on the east side of 16th St just north of Thomas Rd. Tons of giveaways, no cover before 9pm, $5 after. I had a blast last time I went!

I will be there after Bad Brains, so probably around 11pm.

Rips and Philthy Phils are different, Rips used to be Paco y Paco. Anyway I heard Philthy Phils sucked, and a lot of the people just came over to Rips.

Bad Brains was crazy last night. I don't know what my opinion is. Stage diving, mosh pits, and almost collapsing barracades go along with punk rock, but when you're on the rail it can be kind of scary. Luckily Micah and I were on the side rail so were weren't in the depths of the craziness.

I was taking pictures before that but once that got going I was holding the sound cable. I gave Austin's camera to Isabelle. I know somebody got at least a few shots.

Well, shit. Just found out the house we were going to shoot in on the 24th is out. Audra, can you talk to your sister? Maybe John can vouch for how reasonable our little crew is. (Do it, John.)

Speaking of John, I've got 21 downloads on eMusic right now. Which acts/songs in the early parts of Friday & Sunday would you recommend I download to give myself something to look forward to before nightfall? I guess the question can be posed to other folks in this here thread as well. Who are you passionate about among the lower-tier acts? (And yes, I'm sure there are plenty of other threads in which recommendations are made, but I don't know or trust the taste of the vast majority of the board so I figured I'd just cut to the chase with people I've hung out with and who know what I'm liable to appreciate.)

If you want some early morning metal: Baroness - A Horse Called Golgotha, Tower Falls
If you want a country tinged classic rock band: Deer Tick - Easy, These Old Shoes, Houston TX
If you want to see more King Khan + the Black Lips: the Almighty Defenders - Cone of Light, I'm Coming Home
If you want a Mexican psychedelic band I don't really know but rather want to see anyway: Zoe - ???
If you want a Scottish indie rock band that'll be energetic and kicking live: Frightened Rabbit - the Twist, Head Rolls Off, Be Less Rude
If you want a sweet Scottish chamber/indie pop band that might make one think of Stars: Camera Obscura - Lloyd I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken, French Navy, Suspended From Class, Anti-Western

Thanks, I've got some e-music credits left too. Although I've already loaded up on a lot of that stuff, mainly Camera Obscura and Frightened Rabbit.

I've been to Audra's sister's house, it's very nice. What scenes are you shooting?

I will talk to my sister and Chad and see if they would mind. John can also do some persuading I am sure. :)
