Wish I was but every last penny I spend needs to go toward my movie, or else I'll feel like an asshole when I tell someone working 18 hours on my set that I can't afford to pay them anything when I could afford to drink myself stupid at a concert two nights before. (Not that we'll be shooting for 18 hours in a couple of days, but the point still stands.)

Funny you mention this...when I found out I had tix, I had the same thought. Guess it will all depend on how much I like the show, or not. If it doesn't wow me, that will leave me with other options at Chella.

I'm probably free on Friday. Although, I was considering following Jason (HandBanana)'s suggestion and going up to Scottsdale to see Hot Tub Time Machine at the drive-in. It just feels like it should be seen there.

Downing and Nacho...had the same situation in '07...saw Muse at Mesa Amp, then went to Vegoose a few weeks later. I went to their set, but I was really far away and they didn't have their stage show...they didn't even have video screens, so you were just looking at tiny stick figures moving around onstage. Wound up leaving early to see UNKLE. (Who were kind of boring.)

That won't happen this time around. The lack of full production at Vegoose was because they were in Europe playing shows and came back to the U.S. just for Vegoose. It wouldn't have been worth it to bring the production here and then back again. Also, there will be video screens at Coachella.

My friend Joe and I will be in Phoenix for the Muse show. What that does for me is frees up a night in the event of a conflict at Coachella.

Camelback is harder then it looks. if your out of shape you might have a tough time reaching the top. Squaw peak is a bit easier.

On another note... just purchased my tickets =) Already purchased camping pass a few weeks ago.

I like Pueblo Grande Meseum and Archaeological Park (http://phoenix.gov/parks/pueblo.html). It's right in the middle of town and it'sn't something you'll see elsewhere. I think it costs like $6.

Pueblo Grande Museum is located at a 1,500 year-old Hohokam village ruins in modern day Phoenix. For over 70 years the museum has been dedicated to the study and interpretation of the Hohokam culture. On the 102 acre park grounds, visitors explore the ruin of an 800 year-old platform mound possibly used by the Hohokam for ceremonies or as an administrative center. An excavated ballcourt, and to full-scale reproductions of prehistoric Hohokam homes can be viewed along the ruin trail. The site also includes some of the last remaining intact Hohokam irrigation canals.

This is a good time of year to go to the Desert Botanical Garden (http://www.dbg.org/), if that's your thing. That'd cost $15.

Also Phoenix is a normal city; it has bars, restaurants, shopping, other museums and city parks, colleges/universities, whatever. What do you do when you're in not-Phoenix?

The General Phoenix Area Shows thread in the Arizona sub-forum in the Music Lounge mentions a few shows this weekend and places one can find information on more.

anytime i go hiking on the telegraph pass near my house (which is usually on a sunday), i see two guys doing this. last sunday, we saw them walking ahead of us with their giant backpacks. they got high up the mountain fast and by the time we reached the top, they were sailing away in the air. it looks so freaking fun. in the past, i've seen them taking off from the ground even off the national trail. i want to BE these guys.

If we go to G&D I am going to eat elsewhere first and just drink. Being able to half watch some basketball might be nice, though.

Can I suggest Delux (32nd St and Camelback)? I could also get behind Fez (Central, N of Osborn) and wouldn't mind trying Two Hippies Magic Mushroom Burger (8th St and Camelback)

Are you gonna make it, Jen?

I was looking for the crew that hangs out at La Grande Orange.

Great cafe (I guess you could call it that). Got a wonderful coffee and a wonderful cookie along with a nice little bird-cage candle holder.

Camelback was an amazing and really refreshing hike. My legs are killing me, but it was just what I needed.

I love the community here though. (And love the fact that all the tree's are painted for the heat. It tickles me).

I wouldnt mind moving here...or just having a small time place here...if I ever get that kind of money (lol like that'll ever happen).

I passed the polo fields on the way here and had to stop myself from getting off the high-way to visit them. Only three more weeks!

Okay, so I'm less than 2 weeks away from doing my first day of production and the most bothersome thing is that I don't have any of my locations secured yet. I'm close on a couple but I need a few more. Would anybody here by chance have a house they'd let me and a film crew spend some time in (say, 6-8 hours) on a Saturday/Sunday? Exact production dates are April 10, 11, 24, and 25.

Two absolute requests: a fairly sized bathroom with a tub in it, ideally with a tub that isn't against the wall. Another is a kitchen that can pass for belonging to an Academy Award-nominated actor, with nice looking counter tops and an island on which to prepare meals.

Also, if anyone has a decently-maintained front yard that we can shoot in, particularly that meets the above requests, that would be great.

If you live more centrally based, that'd be ideal, but if not, I've got to take what I can get at this point. I can't offer any money but I'll feed you if you happen to stick around, as well as a copy of the film. Lemme know.

i have a pretty big bathroom with a roman tub, but it's against a wall. my kitchen isn't really nice as the appliances and cupboards are older, but there is a sort of island attached to the sink where i have barstools. that's all i got.

great to see bryan, amyzzz, john and sean!

i had a great weekend. went to the desert botanical garden on saturday after lunch with bryan. it was so beautiful; i'd never been. it's like an oasis in the city. i just love the sounds of the cottonwood trees in the wind. the butterfly exhibit was pretty cool, they loved me & my mom since we were both wearing white. i also saw a lot of the flowers that were in the garden on my walk yesterday. i want to go back when it's less crowded though. when there's a lot of people around, i don't feel like i can stop and read all the signs.

also, saw star wars symphony with micah and my friend amy on saturday night a the phoenix symphony. we had dinner before at MacAlpine's 1928 diner (http://macalpines1928.com/). i'd never been before, it was so cute! i'm not big into soda, but they had a lot of different options i'd never even heard of, including dill pickle flavouring (gross). they had an antique store next door i need to go back to.

the symphony was amazing. they opened with the 2001 space odessy music. robert moody conducted and he was a whole lot more entertaining than whoever we saw last week. they then played 4 of the 7 planets: mars, venus, uranus and jupiter. mars & jupiter were my favourite. in mars, you could definitely see how it influenced john william's imperial march. uranus was odd; it was hard to tell when it ended.

after intermission, the conductor came back out in a jedi costume with a light saber. there were costumed star wars characters walking around the stage and the audience. honestly, it was kind of distracting from the music. especially when they would turn up the house lights. but during duel of fates i believe, the conductor jumped off in the middle of the performance to join the light saber battle, that was cool. i know we got the main theme from star wars, the imperial march (:) :) :)), han and leia's theme (which i love), yoda's theme, the march of the ewoks or whatever it's called and duel of fates with a full chorus. that was my favourite of the whole night. so intense. they closed with the throne room which was great too. only other song i'd have liked to have heard was the flag parade from the end of phantom menace. great horns in that piece.

all in all, i had a wonderful time, even though the guy next to me kept singing & talking to himself. the best was that there was a screen above the conductor giving high-level recaps of the star wars plot during the show. the guy next to me kept mumbling shit like "that's not quite accurate". who cares dude, shut the fuck up. oh, and boba fett wanted a piece of this. kinda funny to have a guy staring at you in a boba fett mask.

I don't mind mosquito hawks, the big mosquito looking things that kill mosquitos, at least that is what my mother told me they were. She probably just told me that though so I would go to sleep without her having to crawl on the furniture to kill the fuckers. We use to get them all the time in Oregon.

My biggest fear having moved into an apartment is that I will end up with cockroaches in my house. I remember having them when I was 18 and we lived down in Glendale, they would spray one apartment and the fuckers will migrate over to ours. We broke a lease because they were so bad.

http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/uponsun/2010/03/paul_mccartney_at_jobingcom_ar.php

"The former Beatle managed to play two classic songs live for the first time on American soil in Glendale. Those songs weren't Monkberrian obscurities, either. One was "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," a hit from the Beatles studio-only years -- the Beatles' last real concert was four years before the band's split, so a few such songs exist. The other was Wings' "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five," the closing track on the group's epic Band on the Run album. "

He liked it quite a bit. I got him some bling, a John Cena chain and wrestlemania wrist bands. He made some signs and had a great time. They really put on an outstanding production in regards to lighting, sound and even some pyro on occasion and pull it off seemlessly in a stadium three times the size of the average arena.

meanwhile, Maricopa County has gone down the rabbit hole. Arpaio broke the law, so let's sue the bus company.

County given right to sue over Arpaio's $465K bus buy
by Yvonne Wingett - Mar. 29, 2010 12:50 PM
The Arizona Republic .

The questionable purchase of a $465,000 custom bus by Sheriff Joe Arpaio's department may end up in court.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on Monday authorized the county the right to sue Motor Coach Industries Inc. if negotiating with the company to take the bus back fails. All but one county supervisor, Fulton Brock, voted to give the county the option to sue.

Sheriff's officials bought the bus last year to transport inmates to and from jail and court.

County officials said they want to work with the bus company to recoup the money. They believe Sheriff's officials broke state procurement laws; a county audit concluded the purchase violated state competitive-bidding requirements, county procurement code and other policies. County officials said they cannot lawfully accept title or license a bus that was illegally purchased.

Sheriff's officials have maintained the purchase was legal.

Monday's vote paves the way for the county to sue and ask a Superior Court judge to determine whether the sale was valid and legal. County officials said the Sheriff's Office would not be named in the legal action because they believe sheriff's officials did have authority to enter into the contract.

"We'd rather just give them the bus back and get a check," said County Manager David Smith. "Call it a do-over."

A call to the bus company was not immediately returned.

Sheriff's officials bought the bus with jail-enhancement funds, a special pot of money administered by the department itself. If the money is recovered, a county spokeswoman has said, the money would be returned to the fund.

Brock believes the board's decision to authorize legal action was premature. "I feel there's a better way to approach it - we haven't exhausted mediation," said Brock.

County officials have spent at least $3.2 million on attorneys and other fees over the last year and a half of fighting with each other.

You probably live too far away anyway. People are scoffing at the prospect of driving out to our house, which isn't anywhere near the drive it is to yours. (I know 'cause I followed you home after the McDowell Mountain Music Festival last year. Your neighborhood is really nice.)

Thanks, Audra. I had a really productive meeting with the guy who's lending us his camera today (and who will be serving as director of photography on the first two days of production). He's going to talk to his parents about letting us use their house. I may still hit you up on talking to your sister, though. Will keep that in mind for the next week.

Today was one of those days that makes me wish I didn't have a normal day job. I had the day off from work and just spent it working on my movie. Got the donkey secured and made a decision on another location, then finished the day with a 3 hour meeting. I wish that could be my everyday job.

Keeping up the mortgage payment isn't going to be a problem (knock on wood). We both do plenty well enough. It's a bit too bad to know we're probably locked in here for a few years, but if a movie takes off, perhaps we can absorb the hit.

Itís not "hiding out like a criminal". If they donít come to your door and hand you the ticket you donít have to pay it. The police dept has even acknowledged this, but if you want to go ahead and send in $100 + to clear your conscience have at it

that's what I feared, but I didn't want to believe it.

I'm trying to figure out how I would explain that investment to my wife. "Oh yeah, Rick's a great guy, I know him from the internet". Uh huh.

Well, it's not really an investment. An investment means you expect to get your money back. I can guarantee you that you won't. Would that satiate her?

i am a rule abider. i believe in rules and when i break them i will suffer the consequences. that is a whole lot easier than me constantly worrying who's at my door and whether or not someone walking towards me and saying hi is going to trick me into getting served.

i paid off two of those last year, twice. it was retarded i was going 67 and 66 and i completely spaced the cameras. it sucked, but it was a whole lot better for me to just pay it than to be paranoid for months.

For me it’s a matter of principle though. It’s not right. It’s just another chip away from our civil liberties. It’s this now, then something else. Then there are cameras everywhere watching everyone. Then "why do we even make cars that go over the speed limit" and on and on. You have to stand up for what’s right and not just march along like zombies just accepting everything that’s handed down. Especially when it is something that is clearly motivated by money.

“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. “

Which liberty is that? The right to break the law?

All speeding (and red light) cameras are doing is more effectively and efficiently (well, that's the theory anyway) enforcing the laws put in place by our elected officials. It's like people do actually want speeding laws in place, but then they want to be able to break them when they can get away with it. It makes no sense. Why not just vote to eliminate speed limits altogether?

Reasonable and prudent. How does a camera answer that? It cant.

How about we put a camera in your front yard and when you water your grass on a no water day then they send you a ticket. What if that camera gets a view of inside where you just tore that horrible do not remove tag from your mattress and they send you a ticket for that. Where do you draw the line?

Read carefully. Only the purchaser is to remove the tag. So if he bought it, he can remove it.

As for you Arizonians, fuck your cameras trying to catch me speeding. Put them on the street corners and keep them off the freeway.

Where do you draw the line?

The fact that the answer for this isn't a simple one does not mean that we have to go to an extreme to make it easy.

Cameras on the freeway to catch you speeding does not mean that they're going to put cameras inside your house. You're throwing in a bunch of steps that we can vote/argue against as they come up. Which is to say: I don't want the government putting cameras in my house but that has nothing at all to do with them putting cameras on the freeways that they put there for me to drive on.

Ivy, how much did they charge for you going 66?

I'd be grumpy but fine paying a ticket if I were going over 70, but at 66 I wouldn't pay it, and you'd win that if you got a summons because they can't guarantee that it is calibrated exactly. All those speed checks have to give you a 2-3 mph leeway because they can't guarantee 100% accuracy.

Ah, that makes more sense. And, I wish I woulda known that over the weekend.

If you don't live in Arizona you do not have to pay the ticket. They can't enforce against out of staters. The statute clearly states they have to serve you in person. In other words a process server. All the out of staters who get flashed get a letter but if you don't pay there is nothing they can do and it will be dismissed. The law is clear.

not if you take the southern route on the 17. that area is 55 by downtown. that's where i got my first ticket. but yes, the area by the stack also used to be 55 and i got a ticket for going over 80 there (but they wrote it at 70 so i could go to driving school) after a fight with a boyfriend many years ago.

i know i speed. i can't stop and thus will pay the fines as i get them. places to go! people to see!
