that question doesn't make any sense. how will they, in phoenix, know that you're planning on taking them to california? That's just it, they won't, but should we not mention we're taking it there? Like we roll up to the counter with a case of beer each and they won't say "uh... why so much?"I guess I just don't know the full purpose of this new law and am just looking for clarification. Anything will help!

you don't need to tell the man nothin. show your id, pay your money, and keep your business to yourself.

besides i don't think there's anything against the law to transport alcohol across state lines as long as you are of age and it's for personal consumption

Fourthisto
03-16-2010, 10:03 AM
also you should know there is virtually nothing between Phoenix and Indio. Tonopah (pop 4070), Quartzsite (pop 3397) and Blythe (pop 16,092) are the only towns of any size for 240 miles.Holy Sacajawea, thanks for that tip. We haven't put together any sort of battle plan as far as making pit stops from the airport yet but that's good info. :)

I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some weird crackdown going on, like transporting fireworks across state lines or whatever.

Now I'll slowly back away from this thread into the ether for now and leave you Phoenixicans alone. :)

Nothing wrong with a census. ...It's light years away from the government keeping track of which adults were buying which kind of alcohol.

Oh, so you haven't read the new form yet, I guess. You also have to rank your top 3 albums and tell which superhero you would be if you could.

and i hear census workers make pretty good money.

It's $15 an hour plus 50 cents a mile. I'm hoping I can get bumped to supervisor after the training, since I scored a 98% on their damn test. (All you needed was a 70% to get a job.)

kazimierz in the old town scottsdale area is fucking awesome if you can afford it. it's a wine bar, but they do have decent priced appetizers and nibbles. it's not a place to go for a full meal in my opinion. i've had a different experience there every time i went too which is rare. i've seen some serious flamenco dancers and various old jazz singers with completely different bands. i really like this place and whenever anyone asks me where they should take a date, i always suggest this place.

Get out of my head Ivy! I met a certain Jewish girl there last night for drinks. She wanted to meet somewhere in old Scottsdale so I went online and found out about this place. I almost didn't find it when I got there because it's hidden away from the main street. I started freaking out but by luck turned into the parking lot that is next to it and saw a sign for the place. Its almost set up like a speakeasy. There's one door in the back that you have to look for or you'll totally miss it. It was very nice and romantic. I'm looking forward to going back there.

I got summoned for jury duty again. I just went in October, and they told me there I wouldn't need to serve as a juror for any court for another 18 months. And of course I didn't save anything so I don't remember the court or judge to use that excuse to get out of this one. ugh. Also this notice says if I wasn't an "empaneled" juror, I have to serve for this one anyway. wtf?

You should probably call them; it might be a mistake.

amyzzz
03-17-2010, 11:24 AM
I signed up online and entered the box that said I did jury in October but do not remember the court. After that, they sent out this letter that states "in order to be excused based on jury service in another court, you must have served as an empaneled trial juror that reached a verdict." This one makes it sound like I'm NOT excused since I went to jury duty and was dismissed that same day (the lawyers didn't like me for their trial). I distinctly remember the judge and lawyers saying that we would not have to serve as a juror again for 18 months. argh. Unless I'm misremembering and they said for THEIR court. Goddamnit.

mountmccabe
03-17-2010, 11:29 AM
I believe it is just THEIR court (i.e. whichever of City/County/State/Federal/International you were called for) unless you actually did the whole "empaneled trial juror that reached a verdict" thing.

It made me feel extremely uncomfortable in October. I really REALLY don't like interacting with or speaking to strangers. (I said I believed all drugs should be legal)

I was on a jury once. I voted Not Guilty. I wasn't sure if the cop was lying or not, but I though there was a pretty good chance of it, which certainly constitutes Reasonable Doubt.

so when the jury first got together we were 10-2 in favor of Not Guilty. the 2 guys who were guilty were probably just racists, their whole argument amounted to "oh come on, you know the guy is lying" (the defendant was African-American), while the rest of us were "sounds to me there was a crime and cop arrested the first black guy he could find". The bailiff comes in the room, says it's five til five, if we couldn't reach a verdict in the next few minutes we'd have to come back tomorrow. At which point the 2 guys immediately changed their vote.

Hey Faxy...good thing you didn't go last night. Metric didn't even play for an hour. The crowd was polite, but I'd say only about 20% of them cared. I think they were supposed to play a little longer, but it seemed like they started a bit late, and then about 35-40 minutes in, they tried to lead a singalong of Hey, Hey, My, My (or My, My, Hey, Hey...I never know which is which.) Anyway, it seemed like no one knew what they were doing, they got no response...I think they said fuck it, went right into Dead Disco and Stadium Love and got out. Not a BAD gig, but I'm sure they aren't putting it down as a good one.

Flogging Molly were great, they had a pretty varied setlist, a lot of older stuff. They did an acoustic set in the middle that was nice, but I would have preferred hey go balls out for 90 minutes rather than drag it out to 2 hours with a slow spot in the middle.

So I know right now is garage sale season and I am in search of some gently used/not horrid furniture. My mother sent me $150 for my birthday to apply towards the cause. I can't really get out right now to look though which sucks because by the time I will feel up to it the temp will be hitting the 100's and garage sales will be done with. If any of you hear of anyone who is having a garage sale that might be getting rid of a dining room set or maybe a futon sofa and coffee table could you let me know? I am also in search of a tv stand. I would even take a card table and folding chairs at this point, then I won't feel so weird about having people over and making them sit in my room on my bed with me. :)

Thanks Marc. I was looking for tix on craigslist Tuesday and there wasn't much of anything. I'm glad I didn't waste my money. I'm pretty pleased with the acoustic set they played at Martini Ranch in December. That show was beautiful, perfect and intimate. In all honesty I don't think any of their full band shows will even compete but i'll reserve judgment.

Loca, craigslist will be far more convenient than a garage sale.

Dining set and i would offer them $50 and pay no more.

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/fuo/1649642787.html

futon

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/fuo/1649820237.html

again I would offer $50.

These are just the first two I found, i didn't search very much but I buy tons on craigslist. In the past couple of months I got a 53" RCA projection tv for $200 and an X Box 360 with all the connections and a wireless controller for $100. It's all about being patient and not jumping on the first thing you see.

Audra...I may have a coffee table. My father-in-law is trying to get rid of a table that is very sentimental to Tree & her sis. The sis said she would take it, but she hasn't, so Tree is thinking of snagging it. If she does, we've got a shaker style, light colored coffee table. It's just one of those ones that would be $100 at Target...cheap, but decently made.

However, if her dad's table doesn't fit in our tiny LR, we might have to leave it in the garage until we move again.

In all honesty I don't think any of their full band shows will even compete but i'll reserve judgment.

Don't get me wrong, they were great, just a weird environment. In fact, I would say they were better than they were at Coachella '08 (which is the only other time I've seen them.)

I was really looking forward to their set in 2008 but they had too many equipment problems in the first 5 minutes and it wasn't mixing well with the heat and the lsd. They aren't going anywhere so it's only a matter of time until I see them again.

How was Flogging Molly? I saw them at Lollapalooza 08'. They were kinda fun but not something I go out of my way to listen to.

I have a coffee table as well. It's an antique, but in very good condition (it was my grandparents). Shorter in height, and oval. Solid wood.

I have been searching craigslist too but it's difficult when I am kind of stuck, I find stuff I like but then they sell it before I can get anyone over to look at it or purchase it. I kind of thought this might work a little better for now, until I can get up and around.

shorter in height would work well if I end up with a futon as they are closer to the ground, what do you want for it? Is it really heavy/large in anyway? I live in a third story apartment so I am trying to find something that won't be all that difficult for my boyfriend and friends to get up here for me. :)

??? I have 2, I don't have a sheet on the bed though because I move around and the fucking thing pops off the corners and then I get all stuck up in it. I can't put it back on by myself so I finally said FUCK IT and threw it across the room.

Both Jen and I won movie passes, she to Harkins, I to AMC, and I'm tempted to use mine to see Alice in Wonderland in IMAX 3D at the theater by our house. But considering what underwhelming reviews it's gotten, I'm thinking I'd rather not waste the time. What say you, Tomas? Is the movie worth spending a couple of hours and whatever money is spent on popcorn/soda?

There's this coworker of mine who, based on my description of her (5'2" if she's lucky, 350 lbs on a thin day, 9 teeth in her mouth, one of which looks like a cadaver's), Jen has christened "Miss Piggy." I found out today that not only was she 14 when she had her daughter, who has now made her a grandmother at the ripe old age of 31, but the father was her stepbrother. Who is 10 years older than her. And her dad and his mom, when told that their children had created a child of their own together, thought that the best option would be for them to get married. And even after their divorce and her subsequent marriage to another man two years ago, her ex-husband/stepbrother continued to live with her and their daughters and her new husband and her mother. Her husband used to drive her to work, and to save money on gas, instead of driving home or going to work or doing something productive with his days, he would sit in the parking lot to do her bidding (grab McDonald's or doughnuts or whatever her hungry belly desired) throughout the day. But I guess funds started running short so she made him look for a job, and all he could find was one as a truck driver. Which he took, although it made him uncomfortable since he'd be gone for days/weeks at a time and leave her all by her lonesome with the father of her children. And apparently his concerns weren't unfounded as she's been caught making out with her ex-husband in the parking lot. I almost want to take a picture of her and post it on this board to disgust you with the mental image of her doing anything sexual (or even just having another person's tongue flopping around in that corroded mouth of hers). I know how well Mark's own efforts in that venture went over, though, so I suppose for now this regaling will have to suffice.

well, the symphony starts at 8. i'm sure john can tell us after he sees the show tomorrow night how late it goes :p

Ticket said 7:30 pm; everything started just a couple minutes after that and then they played the Zemlinsky piece - which was magnificent - and halftime started about 8:10. Everything got going again about 8:30 and there was a little more talking, the Kyrie and the Requiem - which was stunning but I would've preferred slightly slower tempi for a few sections - and everything was done by 9:25 pm. Though, of course, for Saturday everything is pushed back half an hour.

The soloists were mostly strong; I thought the tenor stuck out a little bit; I would've expected him in my Italianate dramatic opera but it wasn't that distracting of a mismatch. The alto seemed a little weak at times but she sings the least, too. The chorus was lovely and glorious. The band played well; I love the woodwinds in this piece.

They played a modern completion, by Levin, instead of the standard one by Süssmayr. This adds an "Amen" fugue which was nice but felt either slightly rushed or slightly sloppy, and various other changes, mostly in the latter portions (that Mozart wrote less of.) The Sanctus and the Lux aeterna had the biggest changes I noticed, but, really, there wasn't much that was striking.

So yeah, quite wonderful. Have a great time!

Oh hey, so I got in a car accident a few weeks ago, got rear-ended on Scottsdale Rd. I was able to drive away with no problems, it just looked like the bumper of my car was going to fall off. It took awhile for the insurance companies to straighten everything out but they finally determined the other driver was at fault. So I took my car into the insurance agency yesterday and left in a rental. I got a call after lunch today saying my car is a total loss. So they're giving me a little over $3,600 for a new car. This is a totally sweet deal because I was planning on selling my car anyway for a 4 door vehicle since we have a baby on the way, but I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to get more than $2,000 for it on the open market.

Long story short if any of you spot a sweet deal on a stationwagon for $5,000 or less let me know. Thanks!

Yup. Tomorrow isn't production, just auditions. Shooting April 10-11 & 24-25. Wanna read the script? A friend of mine from South Africa wrote it. It's a comedy, though neither of the producers nor the director of photography could figure it out because there's a bit of depressing shit in it too (like suicide, kidnapping, spousal abuse, bestiality). Considering how minimally most of those items actually appear in the film, I'll defer to my own judgment over yours. And sure, your advice would be appreciated, though I'm anticipating that by the time you actually read it, we'll be mere weeks away from the 2011 Coachella lineup announcement. So do you want it or not?

It's 17 pages, btw.

You have a suicide, kidnapping, spousal abuse and beastiality all in 17 minutes? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MIND?

Yeah I'll read it I guess. Here's my official review of it without having read it: calm the fuck down with the cramming as much melodramatic crap like suicide, kidnapping, spousal abuse and beastiality into every short film you fucking do for Christ's sake. Try to actually tell a story about people for a change instead of a story about shit happening to people. It's boring and more importantly really, really, really fucking hacky.

Monklish

Allow to phrase that a bit nicer:

If you're doing a 15 minute movie, you have exactly enough time to tell a story about ONE thing properly. At the absolute maximum. This means you pick like three characters and a general theme and you have 6 minutes of building that theme, 6 minutes of peak conflict, and then 3 minutes of denouement. You have absolutely no fucking time for introducing a multitude of shit. Wanna tell a story about spousal abuse? Okay, then tell a fucking story about spousal abuse. Wanna tell a story about beastiality? Okay, then tell a story about beastiality. Wanna tell a story about suicide? Okay, then tell a story about suicide. Absolutely under no fucking circumstances are you going to make a fifteen minute movie involving all three work.

It made perfect sense to me, and to be honest, I don't even remember the kidnapping. You are working under the assumption that the movie is ABOUT those events. They are incidental.

But, Rick, I think you have to cut the epilogue. It's the one part that didn't work for me. There a great punchline...fade to black...and then an anti climax. I don't know, maybe it will work onscreen, but I doubt it. And maybe change the fade to a blackout. I don't know how anyone could mistake it for a drama, though.

Also, the French movie needs a funnier title.

If I can't cast a good kid for that scene, it's gonna have to be left on the cutting room floor. Which would suck because, as you noted, it's really funny.

Thanks to Micah and Ivy -- AND NO ONE ELSE -- for joining us for drinks last night. Actually, I kind of preferred the smaller company. Fewer conversations to navigate that way. I hate when there are a lot of people and someone looks to be out of the loop in being spoken with and I feel obligated to pick up the slack.

Lost one of my producers yesterday -- considering how uninvolved he'd been for the past several weeks, it's not really a loss. His biggest contribution was getting me in touch with my director of photography. Who texted me today to say that he got a gig in Oregon from the 10th through the 19th that he's "got to take." That takes him out of the state during our first weekend of production. Nice.

Glad you enjoyed it, John. Great news: I seem to have the donkey secured. Talked to a guy who's got a donkey & is open to letting me use it for the film. He's out of town till Sunday but he told me to call him next Monday so I can, and I quote, "check out [his] ass." I think his sense of humor may just be the sort that even if he asks & is told about the donkey fucking, he'll be cool with it.

Have a great time!

i think the alto part is just fairly weak in general in the requiem. i listened to some recordings online after seeing the show and found it hard to hear the alto in any of them. the tenor was a bit much. i had binoculars and he was fun to watch. the woodwinds were excellent. i felt myself perk up the second i heard the lacrimosa. i also noticed the difference in the sanctus.

the first piece was good, but honestly i would have been happier just seeing requiem. those seats are super small and uncomfortable!!!

thanks for the heads-up on this, john. this saturday i cannot WAIT for the star wars symphony. apparently we're also getting the close encounters of the third time and i could be wrong, but i think we're also getting the planets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Planets) as well. can't wait :)
