A great decision by me was to go solo to the Quannum tour at the Marquee some years back, $30 ticket scored one from the guy working parking for $10 and got to see basically every major Quannum artist including Dj Shadow which is one of my favorite djs of all time.

But mostly I try to buy 2 to force me to get company :)

You fucking loners.

I can't go to a bar or dance club alone though. Need to have something to focus on...either onstage, or a movie...something. I can eat in a restaurant alone, because you can read or whatever and you don't look like a freak.

When everyone took off Saturday night, I was still sobering up. Had to bust out the Blackberry and pretend I get a ton of e-mail at 2am for a little while. I feel like a creep alone in a bar

faxman75
02-23-2010, 11:05 AM
You're a sad excuse for a loner Marc. Drinking alone on occasion is fun, especially if it's at some dive bar.

Dylan always hates me. I remember one time I thought I was finally going to meet him for realz and he turned the other way and started making out with Salah from the board.

Dive bar is OK I guess. It can't be someplace where other people are having fun.

Hung out at the Monte V a lot in Flag, which is the definition of a dive bar, but they always had a band.

I don't remember Ghostland being at the same time as Paul....because I know I recorded his set starting with Blackbird on and remember seeing Ghostland for atleast a couple songs. Maybe it was just a slight overlap....

faxman75
02-23-2010, 11:33 AM
Unless something changed Ghostland was done at 8:40PM and McCartney didn't start until 10:00 so they didn't overlap at all.

The Presets
Patton & Rahzel
APTBS

all conflicted with Macca.

amyzzz
02-23-2010, 11:35 AM
And The Crystal Method. I thought he said he was in the Sahara during Paul, so...whatever was in there.

faxman75

The presets were from 10:10 to 11:00 and Crystal Method was from 11:25 to the end.

sddoctor
02-23-2010, 11:39 AM
Presets barely cut into three songs of Macca. I was able to hit both (running across the fields, of course)

amyzzz
02-23-2010, 11:39 AM
I wandered over to the Sahara during Paul to check The Crystal Method, and it was just ending, then wandered back over to Paul, and of course he was playing something amazing like Yesterday. (that was a mistake)

Mr. Dylanja
02-23-2010, 11:41 AM
Faxino is correctomundo, The Presets and The Crystal Method. Would do the same thing over again if I could. I caught the last half hour or so of Sir Paul wherein he played enough Beatle songs to appease me.

I don't regret anything I saw of Paul. It was a great show, which is why I want to take my family. What I do regret is not insisting that Jacob go that day. I probably should've taken my kids too. Oh well.

the presets are alright, but i really don't get all the massive love everyone has for them. yet another EDM group with some pretty solid beats, but lame sounding vocals.

the other half of mccartney's set was awesome. we missed the first part, but i was happy with a lot of the tunes we got!!! minus ending a day in the life with give peace a chance, what the holy hell is THAT about?!?!

faxman75
02-23-2010, 12:13 PM
They have lazers, lights and good beats but I have no idea why I would have to reassure myself that I made the right choice in picking Macca that night. The Presets will be around and won't cost $100 a ticket.

He played a good amount of Beatles songs in the first part of his set.

For reference.

Main set: Jet / Drive My Car / Only Mama Knows / Flaming Pie / Got to Get You Into My Life / Let Me Roll It (with a coda of Purple Haze) / Honey Hush / Highway / The Long and Winding Road / My Love / Blackbird / Here Today / Dance Tonight / Calico Skies / Mrs. Vanderbilt / Eleanor Rigby / Sing the Changes / Band on the Run / Back in the U.S.S.R. / Something / I’ve Got a Feeling / Paperback Writer / A Day in the Life > Give Peace a Chance / Let It Be / Live and Let Die / Hey Jude

First encore: Birthday / Can’t Buy Me Love / Lady Madonna

Second encore: Yesterday / Helter Skelter / Get Back / Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) > The End

This is what I saw.

Let Me Roll It (with a coda of Purple Haze) / Honey Hush / Highway / The Long and Winding Road / My Love / Blackbird / Here Today / Dance Tonight / Calico Skies / Mrs. Vanderbilt

... so a whole pile of songs I had no interest in hearing with "Blackbird" sandwiched in the middle which glued me to the stage.

Honestly seeing "Blackbird" made up for how dull the other hour I saw was so I can understand how y'all that saw the whole thing can remember it being a good set.

But I have no regrets on leaving when I did. Other than that I probably should've left a couple songs earlier. Though, really, it is possible that I did. Of those other songs I only remember "Honey Hush" and "the Long and Winding Road."

Caught the EOTO show at Sail Inn last night, was surprised how much I enjoyed it. A whole lot of improvised dubstep. I took some good videos front and center but on my buddies camera so I'll have to wait for him to upload them. Anyone else there last night?

On a side note, the older guy that paints usually at Sail Inn painted me a crazy b&w pen on canvas picture during the show, turned out quite good.

i sent you e-mail micah. you can't hide from this one like you did the last one now :p

and sorry again for saying aura was a monthly when really it's not. there was a period of time where there was one like every month, now it seems more "quarterly" or "whenever they feel like it".

i went to a hula-hoop dancing lesson last weekend (which they do at aura). i really want to do it again. they do them for free at that new park downtown by the asu center.

they will. the chick starts off the lesson with basic hula hooping. i was never great it at either. i always try to make a circular motion with my hips. but when you're starting out, it's easier to just thrust forward & back OR side to side. i kept picturing the kid in huddsucker proxy that first tried the hula hoop and that worked for me. then from there she teaches you how to try to push back on the hoop with your body everytime it touches you. she also shows you how to "save" the hoop without touching it. then she goes into all the grabs and walking around, but i couldn't stay for all that and had to leave. and she decorates hoops with colourful tape that you can buy; i know amy bought one. the coolest thing of all is that the chick is an electrical engineer or something like that by day.

and micah, sounds good, i'm just teasing :p also, my girlfriend amy is prolly going to come with us. you two will get along if you haven't met already!

So my friend Tom and I listen to NPR daily, he heard a story on there today about synthetic pot called "K 2 inncense". I've never heard of this but apparently they sell it in the head shops and its supposed to get you high like pot. I guess its legal right now but it is starting to be outlawed in different states. So my friend went and bought some after work today at a head shop and he's going to try it tonight. Have you guys heard of this or tried it yet? The kicker is he said it was $30 for ONE gram. Sanctum is an awesome club. Been there twice. once on a friday and once on a saturday. It is not goth on these nights. Amazing club. the decor is amazing-unlike anything i have ever seen. The sound is very, very loud there. dj's were good both times i was there. The crowd is very, very gay friendly. got some good lesbian make out shows while we were there. I will defintely go back if there was a dj there that i wanted to hear. i think we paid about 10 bucks each time we went and that was around 11. it is pretty dead there until about midnight. i don't know if it is free before a certain time or not.

Went there a couple weeks ago on a tuesday. It was ok i guess. The place def has a dark goth look/feel to it. A lot of gay's (not that there is anything wrong with that) but it wasnt my scene really. not snooty at all. it is a gay crowd mixed with the downtown artsy people. everyone we talked to was nice (or on something). could probably wear shorts and they would let you. it has a goth "feel" to it but on weekends it is straight up dance music. trance and house mostly. i think the owner spent over a million on the decor. do a google search for club sanctum. there are some cool articles on it. the owner actually the first real dance club in phoenix called "the works". he also owns amsterdam, palazzo, and some others.

I will check that out too, but I'm looking more for the atmosphere than an actual "Goth night". (Though next time I'm looking for a place to go on Wednesday, I'll check Sanctum's goth night.)

The ArtLink website is saying that Phoenix First Fridays is the largest self-guided art walk. The only reason I could maybe believe that is that it's actually near a reasonable temperature for it year round here and they're counting cumulative numbers or something.

At any rate the March one is one of the biggest ones because it is the (unofficial) start of Art Detour - which runs this weekend - and because it is often one of the best days, temperature-wise. The first week of March sees highs around 75. April (low 80s) and May (high 80s) are also reasonable.

Also I would likely be down for meeting up for First Friday.

Are you going, Mix Master Micah?

I'm only going if fun guy is going.

We need to have another meet up at the Bikini Lounge... Or go back to that Kraut bar/nightclub/restaurant/sausage factory. Those Krauts can make some good beer.

You guys should hit Sanctum after walking around on First Friday. I guarantee it will be going off.

I've been dying to go to Sanctum. We met up with these goth/vamp types the other night, I want to get them to go with us.

You really should check out Trazylvania on Friday; dark black couches, gothic dragon thingies on the walls, and a weird ceremony at midnight.

But we can end up at Sanctum later on; cool with me.

Nice. This chick has her own fangs and crazy contacts.

Someone said Sanctum was designed by the same guy who used to run The Works.

On another note.... any good Drum n Bass nights anywhere around phoenix???

chairmenmeow47

not anymore. they all turned to dubstep. every once in awhile i'll find something dnb, but unfortunately you mainly find dubstep.

check out the blunt club, which i suggested when you asked about clubs. it's at the yucca tap room now. you'll get some dnb there. we used to have wednesday/thursday night weeklies at the sky lounge, but those days are long gone :(

you might get a little bit of dnb at fuse (which is an event held at bar smith downtown) as well as at UK thursdays, but not much.

I'm considering seeing Lionel Richie at Caesar's Palace in Vegas. Tickets are $90 and it's the weekend i'll be there anyway. Has anyone here ever seen Lionel? I haven't listend to him much since I was a tween but I think it would be fun.

I mean im getting a little older now to be hittin up raves on the reg but id definitly go if there was some dirty grimey DnB playin..... just another reason to chalk up on the "why phoenix blows" checklist

Ive heard about bar smith have not been down there yet... might check it out after first friday this week though

So, are we starting at Carly's by default? Sounds like we might actually have a big group for once, is there anyplace nearby that might be easier to grab a big table?

I may have told this story before, but I'm not sure...I once woke up late and my GF had gone to work. On the other pillow were some Lionel Ritchie lyrics scrawled in crayon. (I'm pretty sure it was "Stuck On You"). It was meant to be ironic, but creepy nonetheless.

we're #3 in the misc lounge, just behind Post Your Picture and the movie thread.

and probably top 5 in the whole board. PAW and Upcoming Shows are the only others that have us beat.

Why the "NIN Shows" thread has >13K posts is beyond me.

You are anti-fun? Are you aware of the great pop songs Mr. Richie has given to the world? All Night Long and Hello are god damned classics, son. The guy had like a dozen hits in a row. How dare you. The Commodores stuff should be good too. I just wonder how his voice has held up over the years.

Hello is one of the shittiest songs of all time, but I would still have a good time at a Lionel show.

But $90? Hell no.

The truely disgusting part is this is supposed to fulfill the empty feeling I have from missing Leonard Cohen at this same venue in November.

Sickening I tell you.
