I'm going to do the opposite. I schlepped all the way over there around 10pm. I couldn't even figure out where it was supposed to be at first, it was like a little party around back. The DJ was playing some downtempo Motown and it looked like a party someone would have in a suburban backyard in the summer. If I had been with my girl, we might have gone in and chilled, but it seemed awkward for a old single guy. So I left and didn't even donate any money.

Yeah I was definitely disappointed with the quality of the fundraiser. We stayed for about 15 minutes and then took off.

You guys shoulda brought some booze and stayed a while. They raffled off a grip of art and stuff towards the end. Then DJent and One Peso dropped something awesome and bizarre and awesome.

They made almost 500 bucks and may have already found a company that will match the donation. Not too shabby.

Anyone catch that moon? It compelled me to finally retire my wolf shirt.

Well now I feel worse. I'll take my $10 I would have given them and match it for $20...send it to Red Cross or something.

That moon was nice.

I saw it last night, and then followed that with Until the Light Takes Us, as mentioned earlier in the thread. You know, to keep the love flowing.

Madcap is a great thing to have in town.

Congrats on the new car, Amy. Sorry 'bout your stomach, Ivy. Your avatar confuses me sometimes, AJ. Wish I had known about Antichrist playing in a theater in town so I could've gone to see it. Thoughts on it, denies the day? (Your name's Manny, right?) Quick, somebody take me up on my Phoenix ticket before Tomas (westcoastpirate) sees this so he doesn't freak about having to unload another ticket. (Unless you want to drive over & pick me up, Tomas, which I doubt being that it's about a 60-mile round trip at the bare minimum.)

Marquee almost always say 6:30. They want you in there drinking, I guess. Seems like they always kick off the opener at 8pm.

mountmccabe

I keep saying this but when I went to see Stars open for Death Cab for Cutie a few years ago I was running late and due to the parking lots being full and the lines I didn't get in until 8:15 and Stars were already entirely off the stage.

I really wish venues in Phoenix published real/consistant schedules that they actually tried to follow.

And Rick, Antichrist was quite something. I am glad I saw it but... wow.

that was a great show, but why is it that the singer can sing in English no problem but when he is just talking you can hardly understand a word he's saying? i always thought that was weird when someone could sing more clearly than they speak. (ozzy as another example)

[shameless plug] An old friend of mine is doing some kind of radio/video webcast show called "Locals Only: Phoenix". It starts on the 21st. I'm not sure of the exact format, but it looks like maybe it will be a local morning news show format without the morning or the news. They are looking for local musicians and local businesses to be featured. I'm not sure if the businesses have to pay for sponsorship or what. It's not a podcast, going to be live and all tied in to viewers on Twitter & Facebook. I am not vouching for it's quality, just helping a friend.

The recruiter who set up the interview sent me an email with some "helpful hints" for the phone interview. One of them was to make sure I smiled while answering the questions, because a smile can be heard over the phone. I laughed because the only time I have ever heard that was the other day when on the phone with Dylan and he asked if I was high because he could hear me smiling. Probably not a good idea to get high before my phone interview though.

BTW, (more shameless plugs) my friend who is displaying at First Friday is Elysian Art. She does all kinds of different stuff, but I want one of her Goth Babies

I'm afraid of the hipsters and their judgments upon me. And J wouldn't like all the people.

locachica73
02-05-2010, 08:31 AM
Amy, when I was down there it wasn't too crowded, other than the closed roads and finding parking it was fine. I don't really care for crowds either but it has a good vibe. And you worry too much about what others think of you. Enjoy yourself and if people don't like it tell them to fuck off.

chairmenmeow47
02-05-2010, 08:40 AM
i love just walking around in phoenix cause it's so rare to get to do that. plus, i'm on the lookout for a piece of art for my mantle so this is perfect. otherwise, i like to go sometimes just to see what people are trying to hock, even if i usually can't buy anything. and sometimes i have dj friends playing various events down there so it makes it worthwhile for me. it's not super exciting or anything, but it's fun & i usually end up doing something fun after the artwork ends.

TomAz

I'm already comfortable with Coachella and know what I'll find there. Coachella is in my comfort zone.

TomAz
02-05-2010, 09:02 AM
But it's full of hipsters and crowds. Exactly the things you cite for being reluctant to go to FF.

locachica73
02-05-2010, 09:07 AM
Sometimes the experience outweighs the fears. I wouldn't go to a music festival for years because I have a similar fear of crowds. But finally got talked into it when Prince got added. Now I am so glad I did, the crowds never really bother me at coachella because everyone is so relaxed. But put me in a crowded bar or mall where I can't reach the door without bumping into 30 people and I will have a panic attack.

mountmccabe
02-05-2010, 09:09 AM
So, really, we just need Prince (or Amy's equivalent) to play First Friday.

M Sparks
02-05-2010, 09:16 AM
I do miss First Friday in Flagstaff...in the summer, you would see everyone you know wandering downtown. They don't have a street fair or anything, just the galleries stay open late and it's an excuse to go downtown and see everyone. And then, they have a pretty good electro night at one of the bars afterward.

amyzzz
02-05-2010, 09:21 AM
I don't really have a problem with crowds. That's more J's thing. I like crowds, as long as I'm not expected to talk to anyone.

Also, hmm, if I make it down earlyish - 6 to 6:30, I guess - too it might make sense to Carlys; the food/beer is good. If I'm later - 7 or 7:30 - that won't be as good of an option. I'm sure we can figure something out.

Mastodon are gearing up for an April/May headlining run with Between The Buried And Me, Baroness and Valient Thorr as support. Initial dates for the trek run as follows:

April 24th Burlington, VT – Higher Ground
April 26th Greensburg, PA – Palace Theater
May 03rd Albuquerque, NM – Sunshine Theater
May 04th Tucson, AZ – Rialto Theatre
May 15th Omaha, NE – Sokol Auditorium

That Tavern back by the amphitheater has good beer, and I doubt they have a cover, at least not early in the evening. Food is decent too.

I'm a regular Dapper Dan in that photo... Hey Tomas, what are you hiding behind your back? That Sonic Youth show was killer. Good times, good times.

Who is the fellow that posts in here sometimes that works for The Marquee? I'm wondering what time Bassnectar will come on.

I know what I'm having for lunch now.

The guy who works at Marquee doesn't know until he gets to work that day, I think. We should probably remember his name, as he is helpful.

i doubt that bassnectar will come on that early. sin is right that's usually when BANDS go on, but EDM acts tend to be closer to 11. i think crystal method didn't actually hit the stage until 11:30 or something if i remember correctly... dylan would remember a whole lot more though :p

Yeah, it said on Bassnectar's website "11." But he took it down. I'm just looking for a confirmation.

The ticket says doors at 8, show at 9, so Bassnectar should be later than that.
