Thanks for the heads up, karma guy. I fucking hate the Dodge Theatre's website, though. Why can't they give any indication on their official website how much tickets are going to be? I saw him at the Rialto in '06 and was surprised at how electrifying his performance was. He's still really energetic despite his age. I'm kind of suspecting, though, that this show will be out of the price range I've determined for myself for this year.

mountmccabe
01-24-2010, 07:21 AM

Actually I think I saw something in the neighborhood of $50 so, yeah, oh well. I'm sure it'll be a great show.

So John, who are you looking forward to at Coachella and can you upload an album of Deer Tick's that you think will have the best chance of getting me excited to see them?

mountmccabe
01-24-2010, 07:48 AM
My #1 for each day are Pavement, Camera Obscura and Grizzly Bear. Well, maybe Friday is Fever Ray; I'mn't sure. I am also looking forward to Public Image Ltd, Deer Tick, Echo And The Bunnymen, Frightened Rabbit, the Gossip, the Raveonettes, the xx, Devo, Deerhunter, King Khan, Owen Pallett, Matt & Kim and Sly And The Family Stone. And others that I'mn't sure about, that'rent priorities but would be nice to see in a such a setting.

What's your list look like?

Let me see what I can do about the Deer Tick.

Somewhat Damaged
01-24-2010, 08:09 AM
You're the second person in consecutive days to mention Frightened Rabbit so I'm going to have to do some research on them.

My #1 for Friday is Fever Ray, followed closely by LCD Soundsystem. Rounding out the day are Grizzly Bear, Echo and the Bunnymen, Public Image Ltd (more to do with Jen's excitement over them), La Roux (just bought their album yesterday & like it), and Passion Pit (though we did just see them in December). Barring conflicts, I'll also be interested in checking out Them Crooked Vultures, Deadmau5, The Specials, Grace Jones, & Yeasayer.

My #1 for Saturday is a toss-up between The xx and Dirty Projectors -- I like the xx album more, but have heard not to get too amped about their live set. Also: 2many DJs, Gossip, Sia, and Devo. Will probably catch at least a bit of The Raveonettes, Bassnectar, Flying Lotus, and Craze & Klever. Conflicts permitting, Dead Weather, Hot Chip, Faith No More, and MGMT to see if they don't suck live anymore.

#1 for Sunday is Orbital followed closely by Thom Yorke. My worry is that they'll conflict, at least in part. Or that Orbital will conflict with Gorillaz, who are my #3. Sunday is just so stacked, I wish they would put some of the upper tier stuff on Saturday. I'm also eager to see Sly and the Family Stone, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Deerhunter. I'm tempering my hopes of seeing Spoon, De La Soul, Gary Numan, Yo La Tengo, and Infected Mushroom because I'm figuring they'll conflict with the heavy hitters at night. Won't be crushed if I miss Phoenix since I'm seeing them next week, but if it works out, great. Will probably also see Yann Tiersen (love the Amelie soundtrack), Owen Pallett and Miike Snow.

Your lists are looking pretty, pretty good, Rick & John. I created a list thinking I can see about 8 full sets each day. We'll have to see if there are set time conflicts but for now I'm thinking...

Friday - Fever Ray, Grizzly Bear, La Roux, LCD Soundsystem, Little Dragon, She & Him, The Avett Brothers, & Them Crooked Vultures.

Saturday - Camera Obscura, Devo, Dirty Projectors, Faith No More, Hot Chip, The Almighty Defenders, The Dead Weather, & The XX.

Sunday - De La Soul, Gorillaz, Jonsi, King Khan & The Shrines, Pavement, Phoenix, Sly & The Family Stone, Thom Yorke, & Vampire Weekend.

I like La Roux's and Little Dragon's albums, should be cool to see them live. I only have the latest Avett Bros album but I really like it and want to check out their earlier albums. I'm curious about what is going to happen with Sly on Sunday. He's done a few shows in the last couple years but all the reviews have been pretty bad. They say he always goes on late and doesn't really play the songs the whole way through, he'll get up and leave the stage and let the band play most of the songs and then comes back on, weird. I hope it's not a trainwreck. I'm also excited to see what kind of guest stars the Gorillaz will have. Should be sweet!!!

Two 2many DJs downloads in one day makes this 2many DJs Day. Thank you, karma guy.

I have a hunch that if Sly & the Family Stone don't cancel, they'll play right ahead of Thom Yorke on the main stage, a la Willie Nelson playing the late afternoon slot on the main in 2007. I hope that if such is the case, it isn't a train wreck. At least when the Happy Mondays were a mess, I had no reason to stick around their tent for any longer than the 15 minutes that I allotted myself to see them.

The thread is about the city because folks live in the metropolitan area.

To make things interesting - in a matter of speaking - the band are playing here - though, technically, in Tempe - next week, which some folks find amusing, worth going to or both.

Shortly after folks will skip right over Bowerbirds/Julie Doiron and switch to talk of St. Vincent, though unless I get out to get my tickets soon I will likely end up slyly mocking that talk as well.

What the fuck is going on lately?

The lineup came out, Prelude; that's always a siren call, luring folks to crash on our rocks.

There's tons of places on Mill

Chili's
Gordon Biersch Brewery
Casey Moore’s Oyster House
Library Bar & Grill
Tavern on Mill
RA Sushi
Bison Witches Bar and Deli
Chronic Tacos
Zuma Grill
Cafe Boa Bistro and Wine Bar
La Bocca Urban Pizzeria + Wine Bar
Macayo's Depot Cantina
Hippies Cove

There's also some 24 hour diner on the corner of University and Mill where the Ruby Tuesday's used to be. i don't know anything about it though.

Edit-it's called Sucker Punch Sally's and it has $3 PBRs.

I already have tickets to the PSO dates; I am taking my parents to the Mozart for my father's birthday (late present) and going solo to the Beethoven and thus would be more free to meet up before/after/etc.

Also: The tickets I got are great seats (face was $62/$72) but they cost me $30 a piece because I bought the 4-pack of vouchers, where you call when you pick what show you want to go to and get the best seats available.

I'd certainly be in if folks wanted to get together for, say, Beethoven's 3rd on Friday, April 2nd.

The first movement of the 3rd:
FFltqVS8d9I

But, really, I love the Mozart and I won't dissuade folks from going to that. And, honestly, if folks wanna go on the Saturday I might be able to be persuaded into seeing it again.

What's your guys' problem with the Eagles? "Love Will Keep Us Alive" is a seminal track for me. Prior to that, I listened primarily to gangsta rap and got bad grades. The Eagles helped me turn my life around.

And I used to scoff at the Jonas Brothers, and some of their songs are still a little cheesy, but Jennifer's daughter has been playing the Nick Jonas and the Administration CD in the car whenever we have family drives and I have to confess, the young Mr. Jonas's recent Elvis Costello phase has really paid dividends for his songwriting abilities.

Hey you guys my buddy and some others are having a musical Haiti benefit this Friday in downtown Phoenix, open donation at the door:

I hope this show doesn't divide the Phoenix thread like the Radiohead fundraiser at the Fonda divided the rest of the board!

Quoted for you guys, I'm thinking about going, my buddy, Smite, is playing.

We aren't going. Well, at least, I'm not. We're getting up early to get on a flight to SFO.

The Phoenix Symphony presents the music of Led Zeppelin and Queen at The Dodge Theatre tonight. I bet it'd be a good time.

Kashmir + Bohemian Rhapsody in the same night = EPIC

LOL that would be more Nick's cup of tea than the other. And I am guessing there is no pool table at The Firehouse in order to keep him entertained. :(

Did you really just spell that that way?

Led Zeppelin's legendary song... about sweaters.

Led Zeppelin was heavy into the black arts and cashmere sweaters...

I just found out that the Norwegian (http://www.norway.org/About_Norway/) black metal doc Until the Light Takes Us (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014809/) is screening at MadCap (http://madcaptheaters.com/) Saturday at 6 and 10 and again Sunday at 6. Is anyone else interested in seeing this?

HEY LIVE NATION! Maybe you could indicate SOMEWHERE on your website how much tickets are?

If you read the comments (since they refuse to post any info), it says that Randy Jackson (Not that one, no, not that other one.) is singing the Zeppelin stuff. "WHO'S BEHIND THE DOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRR!"

I can't wait for you two to return to this thread and act all smug about how you care so much about the Haitians that you attended this benefit party. Some people have jobs that keep them from being able to attend benefits like this but I'm so glad you aren't similarly burdened. Please, please, regale us with how "intimate" the setting was. We're all waiting with baited breath over here.

I'm going to do the opposite. I schlepped all the way over there around 10pm. I couldn't even figure out where it was supposed to be at first, it was like a little party around back. The DJ was playing some downtempo Motown and it looked like a party someone would have in a suburban backyard in the summer. If I had been with my girl, we might have gone in and chilled, but it seemed awkward for a old single guy. So I left and didn't even donate any money.

OK...I'm going to go donate online or something. I'm a terrible person.

I thought about carousing last night, but I downshifted to cavorting.

And then I downshifted to going home, watching TV, and interacting with the interwebz.

Yeah I was definitely disappointed with the quality of the fundraiser. We stayed for about 15 minutes and then took off.
