Yeah, just sayin' bout the Marquizzle.

I'm not even sure what the "rules" are. I just see douchebags dressed up as golfers and go to multiple bars. I usually see frat guys doing it.

40 oz of Blue Moon? Nice one, Rick.

It completely derailed my plans for the evening. Instead of going out and networking and being productive with my Friday night, I'm staying in and getting drunk and doing absolute shit.

So how was Royskopp? Wait, don't tell me or I'll hate you if you say they were awesome. I fucking left work at 7:17 on Wednesday; I wouldn't have even gotten to the show on time if it was in Phoenix.

And I don't know if it was an actual 40 ounces of Blue Moon, but it was big and it was potent. Kind of like me.

I need to be out of my house this weekend. Going to look at some rentals in the Gilbert/Mesa/Chandler area on Tuesday. There's one in Sun Lakes that's cheaper than all the rest and looks much nicer/bigger. I hate gated communities, but I guess I can live in one for six months or so.

Anyway, where the fuck is San Tan Valley? There's a huge house there with pretty cheap rent, but Google Maps has never heard of the city or the street. Supposedly, everything the realtor sent us to look at was within 10 miles of my wife's new job, but this sounds like it would be way the hell out of the way.

amyzzz

the San Tan freeway goes through Chandler & Gilbert. I go to San Tan Village Mall all the time.

TomAz
11-20-2009, 09:12 PM
The whole San Tan area is a giant mormon reclamation project where they abduct children and brainwash them on the dangers of diet pepsi. then they feed them to the cactus. then they invest in an indian casino. then they inbreed.

M Sparks
11-20-2009, 10:09 PM
Yeah, and I didn't know Sun Lakes was a retirement community.

Looks like San Tan Valley just got a zip code this summer, probably why Google Maps can't find it. Anyway, too far away. We'll pay the extra $50 a month or so and stay in Gilbert or Mesa.

I'm not sure Jason, Faxy would be the one to ask. In the Wilco documentary "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" they show Jeff playing a solo show but I can't remember what songs they showed him playing. Faxy would probably know. Or maybe you can find his past solo shows listed on one of the wilco fan sites.

Tweedy does a lot of solo shows.

Definitely a few a year, sometimes it's for a benefit and sometimes it's just to work out the new material before they head into the studio which I believe might be the case here since they have said they are trying to get another album out before the end of 2010.

I used to have several of his solo show bootlegs from the early to mid 00's but I don't know what happened to them. I have never seen him solo acoustic and there are no other solo dates scheduled so somehow we lucked the fuck out!

Jason and Micah, i'm down for either separate tickets or all together. I'm guessing buying all separate might be the easiest and since it's a Sunday show we can do drinks and football or something pre show. :D

You are going to hate me. So you know how at Ghostland you and some others took some vitamins? You know I haven't taken such vitamins in 9 years so being around it got me reconsidering my decision to never take the vitamin again? So on Wednesday for Royksopp I took said vitamin and it was absolutely fantastic. The venue lay out was a bit shitty because there were these big pillars. Then we didn't make it inside the venue in time to get wristbands for the pit but you could still see the stage well. It was just an amazing time. They opened with Royksopp Forever and after that just played every song that you would want to hear. Certain memories stand out like Robyn singing The Girl and The Robot, singalong to This Must Be It, getting lost in the music big time during You Don't Have A Clue, Feather up on Forza's shoulders and raving out during Poor Leno, things like that. I was in such a blissful state of mind in my own world and any time I looked around me I saw the beautiful faces from this board smiling and dancing. The show was amazing but I truly think the group of us together helped make it even that much more special.

I mentioned in another thread (the bring Royksopp to Coachella thread) that they really need to be there so everyone from the LA show, the SF show and all the people that couldn't make it (YOU) can all be together to experience that bliss in the Sahara.

There shouldn't be one. It should be a link on the wilcoworld tour page when they go on sale. You might have to register from there for front gate tickets. I'm not certain. This morning I just singed in to my account directly at frontgate tickets and saw my older wilco orders from this year and years prior.

There was a great interview with Wes Anderson, writer/director of Fantastic Mr. Fox, on NPR's Fresh Air this afternoon. If you missed it you can listen to it at the npr website.

Rushmore Yankees: Five Bands That Rip Off Wes Anderson
Posted 6 days ago

Artist:
Vampire Weekend

It's been 13 years since Wes Anderson's first movie, Bottle Rocket, hit theaters. Since then, he's directed a slew of increasingly high-profile and critically acclaimed films: Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic, and The Darjeeling Limited. While the last two of these movies have had mixed reviews, Anderson has finally returned to form this year with the Fantastic Mr. Fox, a claymation adaptation of the Road Dahl classic that even features an animated Jarvis Cocker. Given his storied and by now lengthy career as the quintessential cult director for shy, bookish indie types, it's only inevitable that his style and taste would influence a new generation of young indie bands, even though his own film soundtracks mainly feature '60s British Invasion rock. There's plenty of other things in Anderson's work for them to put into their band's look and sound: a habit of creating hilariously thorough designs, dressing in goofy-yet-stylish clothing/uniforms, and telling stories that seem to reek of childhood fantasy despite being created by adults. Regardless, here's a sampling of bands good and bad of the Rushmore Yankees, the bands who have taken at least a bit of their schtick from Wes Anderson.

Vampire Weekend

While the music itself owes more to Paul Simon than the Kinks, there's plenty in Vampire Weekend's aesthetic that borrows directly from Anderson. Mainly, they both share a certain brainy diction and personal way of dressing up far more than anyone their age should. The biggest indicator of their fandom, though, is their video for "Oxford Comma," which is a tribute to both Anderson's intricate visual tics and his love of the Futura Bold font.

Noah and the Whale

Noah and the Whale - Shape Of My Heart - Funny blooper videos are here

And here's where we make an important distinction in the list. A good chunk of the bands that will get mentioned in this list aren't necessarily bad for ripping off Wes Anderson: it's just one of their many influences alongside their favorite bands, filmmakers and artists that creates the perfect storm of a half-decent album. However, when Wes Anderson appears to be your only reference point, you're bound for trouble. In the same way that people tend to harp on Anderson rip-off movies like Napoleon Dynamite, Rocket Science, and Juno for taking all the style and none of the substance, the same can be said for Noah and the Whale. Not only does their name come via Anderson's Life Aquatic, but every little bit of their sound and style seems to come straight out of the director's mind, albeit in a much more shallow, populist way. Also, it usually helps if you know how to write a decent pop song as well.

The Decemberists

When the Decemberists first hit the scene early in the decade, two reference points were constantly brought up: Neutral Milk Hotel and Wes Anderson. Both of these were justified, one musical and the other thematic. Given the bizarre yarns that frontman Colin Meloy would spin the band's songs, it seemed logical that people might think of the equally wonderful and strange plots that Rushmore protagonist Max Fisher would make for his plays. The Anderson comparison reached its logical conclusion with the video for "16 x 32," a fun and cheeky tribute to Rushmore... yes, tribute, not ripoff. Since then, the Decemberists have been criticized for many of the same reasons as Anderson's later fims: overly self-indulgent, uselessly extravagant, lacking a personal heart. Might we suggest they score a claymation film to win critics over again?

Gregory and the Hawk

WHAT was THAT? It seems as if naming your band ____ and the _____ is a setup for epic failure. We already let off most of our steam having to once again hear Noah and the Whale's music, but we'll reiterate it here: there's the kind of Wes Anderson geek that borrows more from the director's own influences of JD Salinger and Brit rock, and then there's the kind of fan that would rather just "look interesting." These two bands should go on tour together.

Sufjan Stevens

Stevens and Anderson both have a penchant for big, intricate designs and little details, hoping that it all shapes up to one statement about how we define ourselves through the little things. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. For the most part, we'd like to think that it works. What they also seem to have in common is a sincerity with their work: while they (along with the previously-mentioned Decemberists) get criticized for having impersonal visions, they truly believe in what they're doing, always adding some humanity to their creations. While Anderson may have gone the claymation route to redeem himself, Sufjan's been all over the place lately, whether it's creating orchestral compositions or putting away the concept album in favor of some epic and straightforward songs. While he's not a fan of music videos, the sole one he did for his Chistmas album only further ties him to the Anderson aesthetic.

I kinda love how Bart's expression doesn't change one bit, either suggesting that the animators were lazy or he didn't even register that Grampa had just entered the establishment.

Now if you could find a gif of Homer when he's dressed as Krusty the Clown and he rides the tiny tricycle and his pants get pulled down, prompting Krusty to cover his eyes in disgust and say, "Burn that bike," my faith in Christmas would be restored. :thu

Did you guys hear about Tipsy Tow? AAA is offering free rides and a tow of up to 10 miles for free if you get too drunk while you are out.

I doubt they make you blow in a breath alyzer first. :)

I was out one year and had set aside $60 in cash for a cab ride, even though I had heard about some cabs offering free rides on new years, I just wanted to be safe. I was going about 15 miles from Scottsdale Rd and Thomas to Lindsay and Broadway, a fairly straight shot on the 202, the cab driver asked me how much cash I had and when I told him he kicked us out of the cab saying $60 wasn't enough for the ride. My girls and I ended up sleeping in the car for an hour to sober up while waiting for a ride. Just make sure you have cash on hand (a lot apparently) in case you end up somewhere and the service is not available for whatever reason.

Cabs charge $2 a mile. So even if you got in and the meter started at some insane amount like $10 that would only put you at $40.

Actually by car your cab ride was only 10 miles, so if a cabbie refused $60 for that he was smoking crack because that fare should have been $40 max and that's if you spent crazy amounts of time at red lights.

I was told by friends that because it was 2 am he wanted to try to get a closer fare so he could possibly get 2 out of the way therefore more tip for him. All I know is it was a cold night and I damn near froze while sleeping in the car.

I'm going. Bought my ticket and everything. Amy is on the fence pending the Go Daddy holiday party. I believe John may also be on the fence pending a different holiday party. Micah seemed to definitely be going but I wouldn't want to speak for him. Tom apparently has to miss it due to some work-related (or so I presume) travel.

From Mob's facebook:

I will be djing this friday for the Krampus Christmas show at Infinity Gallery, 420 E Roosevelt, 7PM till who knows when. Come through, there will be great art, great people, great lights and lots of fun musical surprises. Come dance. Expect the unexpected. You know you wanna. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Happy holidays!

Yeah, a FF meetup sounds fun. We can start somewhere like Carly's or the Roosevelt, move to Mob's party, and then find AJ.

It might be nice to walk through Modified as an art gallery that still does shows frequently one last time. And maybe all that other stuff.

I am pretty much out for Metric. I kinda want to be in for Jeff Tweedy but I think I'm a few weeks late on that. I realize there should probably be tickets left but that is less appealing to me. If someone has or ends up with an extra or something let me know, eh.
