They serve them at the local bar I hang out at, still haven't had the nerve. I like cucumbers, I find it a little sad that they take a fairly healthy food item, soak it in salt and viniger and then deep fry it. But I still feel like I need to at least give it a shot.

Argh. I'm going to have to find a Sookie themed halloween party.
I just started watching that show, and I did a double take when I read the name of the place for this party (Merlotte's).

i've had these back in indiana...if done right, they are awesome. if done wrong, they will be all slimy and make me gag.

I gave up on the fair after fearing there would be a war between the trailer park people and the gang bangers.

The bar at my house does the sandwich pickle chips that they deep fry. I am not sure if that is the norm or not.

there isn't much of anything that would get me to the fair again...that place is dirty and expensive. even dylan and/or STP wasn't enough.

and why the hell is dylan playing the fair anyways...he can sell out his own shows. fairs and casinos (except in vegas, the pearl rocks!!!) are for has-beens....

nothing short of having a child that was pefroming at the fair for some school thing or something will ever bring me there again. the rides are flat out dangerous, it's dirty, the food is shitty, the eating areas are filthy, pretty much all areas are filthy, the people are obnoxious, parking is insane and everything is overpriced.

Good news: I've got the day off work!

Bad news: It's 'cause Jen threw her back out right before I left this morning and I've been tending to her pretty much hand & foot all day.

Good news: My office is going to be open tomorrow so that I can go in and make good on the overtime I was setting myself up for by going in early, staying late, and taking short lunches all week. The upside of working on a Saturday: not having the work I want to do be interrupted by taking phone calls.

Bad news: If Jen's back is still rendering her bed-ridden tomorrow, I'm gonna have to try and find someone to buy her Bob Dylan ticket or that's $24 down the drain. Any potential takers?

Mr. Dylanja
10-16-2009, 02:48 PM

Bad news: You'd have to give me a back rub.

Saw them at the Electric Ballroom for Nihil, the Huntridge (in Vegas) for their "farewell", and at Cajun House for their "comeback". Second one was the best...

Even if they did Money, you might not have recognized it. They usually do the "metal mix" live- totally different arrangement. I don't know if I've ever heard them do Sex On The Flag. They usually do 4 or 5 older songs though...I just don't care for the last couple of albums, and I know that will be at least half the show.

New food items this year include:
Chocolate-covered bacon
Deep fried battered bacon on a stick with gravy
Reindeer hot dogs
Deep fried scorpion plain or dipped in chocolate
Deep fried grasshoppers on a stick (All bugs that are FDA approved for human consumption)
Sauteed meal worms served on a bun w/BBQ sauce

I learned some shitty news today. A friend of mine had a stroke and a heart attack last night and they put her into a medically induced coma.

I've been invited to some sort of healing circle that there is no way I can go to because I don't believe in that voodoo but fucking A this is pretty scary. Hopefully she pulls through. :( Apparently the idea of sending angels from the gift shop to her room has become popular and like 15 or 20 have been ordered for her, so it will be nice if she wakes up to all that love.

Unas cosas:

Yo La Tengo was so much fun. The encore was worth the price of admission alone.

Matt & Kim need better material. Or more talent. The crowd was really young and sorta refreshing but only because I don't know any better.

I'm so done with parties at the Clarendon. Staff is retarded.

Season pass for the AZ state fair is only 21 bones online and it looks like Fridays are the day to go. I will be the guy weeping if/when Bob Dylan sings "I'll keep it with mine." Yes.

SURPRISE, ARIZONA -- Sheriff Joe Arpaio was back on the streets for another crime sweep Friday evening. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) officially lost their federal immigration certification today, but that has not stopped the arrests.

So far this evening, 19 people have been arrested, 6 face no charges but are suspected of being here illegally and ICE has already come for them. Two others are suspected illegal immigrants arrested for not having proper identification. Arpaio says this is proof that he can still enforce immigration laws. “We don't need 287 (g) we don't have to be controlled by Washington.” said Arpaio during his 12th crime suppression sweep.

That's despite the federal government's move to deny over 100 deputies their ability to act as federal immigration agents. Arpaio’s response: “I don’t need the federal law.”

So last night Dylan came out, right at 7 pm and started in on some song I forget what it was. Or never knew. At any rate, after that he stopped and said, hey, I'm happy to be in Arizona. Though I don't know what to play. I am going to draw a name out a hat. He pulled off his fine cowboy hat/top hat and you could see one or two slips of paper fall out. He held it above his head with one hand and picked out one of the remaining slips with the other. "Jennifer. Is there anyone in the audience named Jennifer? If so you get to come up on stage and select the songs we play." Turns out there wasn't ANYBODY named Jennifer. After a couple minutes someone yelled out "Oh me!" and went up on stage but when Bob asked for ID it turns out they were named Alecia. She was escorted out by security. Bob then glared as us and we felt bad because we knew that we were to blame for her outburst. He then played an awesome version of Merle Haggard's "Workin' Man Blues" to show us what we would've gotten, had we been a better crowd and then he left. There was a riot. I went home with a black eye and an awesome jacket and a purse that looks like an elephant. Good show.

The only correction I have to make to John's account is that the "Workin' Man Blues" song he performed was actually "Workingman's Blues #2" and NOT a Merle Haggard cover but rather a Bobby D original off his Modern Times album. Otherwise, nice summation.

The Jennifer thing must have happened at the very beginning because we showed up a few songs before Highway 61, sounds kinda sad.

John were you smack in the middle of the first group of reserved seats on the floor? We saw some half-ass fisticuffs happening somewhere down there that looked like it involved some older people.

I was in the section directly behind that. They change the stupid fried thing every year. I assure you it existed a few years back, but there's no reason they would keep it around. The idea is to get some publicity and get you to the stand. Then you either chicken out and buy something tastier, or you buy the awful thing, take one bite, throw it away, and buy something tastier.

I was one row behind where this scuffle ensued. Security was telling people to put their cameras away. I guess this one guy didn't and a security guy came up behind him and tried to take his camera from him. The guy wouldnt give it up and then the craziness started. At least four or five security guys swarmed on him and he had his girlfriend and mom in the middle of it too. It looked like they had the guy in a headlock or chokehold. Crazy. They finally took him out but he was allowed to return a few songs later.

Sitting in the front sec was weird, we were in the back row of the front sec so no one was behind us, my friend and I were standing and someone from the sec that John and Rick were in came up behind my friend and asked us to sit down. My friend yelled at him and told him its a rock concert and we can stand if we want. Security came up and told first that we could stand. Then a few minutes later they came back and yelled at us to sit down or they would take us out. Meanwhile not more that 10 ft to the left and right people were standing for the whole show. But, we were yelled at to sit down. The security and people at the show were horrible. Luckily, Bob and his band were awesome.

I don't even understand how this would would work. Even if theoretically you breaded/battered the butter first, wouldn't it all just melt out? Maybe it would work if you started with super frozen butter.

"So here’s what Gonzales does: He takes 100 percent pure butter, whips it until it is light and fluffy, freezes it, then surrounds it with dough. The butter-laden dough balls are then dropped into the deep fryer.

"For purists who just want the unadulterated taste of butter, Gonzales serves up plain-butter versions of his creation. For others who want a little more pizzazz, he offers three additional versions with flavored butters: garlic, grape or cherry."

Deep fried butter... Really? And we wonder why we have an obesity problem in this country.

I know a lot of fat people (me being one) but I don't know anyone who eats fried butter. So I don't think you've quite found the cause.

it's funny that I'm the one person in this thread so far that thinks fried butter sounds delicious and I'm quite underweight

EDIT: the way i treat my body though, i'll probably have a heart attack by the time i'm 40

It's not just the deep fried butter... its the concept of taking anything we can find, dreadging it in batter and floating it in a pot of oil. I am not a skinny person either but I eat relatively healthy, or try to at least. The idea of all of this just makes me want to puke. I just wish the idea of beer made me want to puke as well. :)

It's awesome, but don't get it at a fair or someplace like that. Order it in a decent restaurant and you probably won't be disappointed.

I think my only exposure to it was from the Anton Corbijn DVD that came out a few years back as part of the Directors Label series (which included vids from Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, and Mark Romanek). I liked that song.

Fucking traffic tonight was abysmal due to their concert, though. This city can't handle a concert like that better? It's gotta be backed up from the I-10/101 junction all the way east of the tunnel? Really? Fucking douchebags. (The band and their fans.)

Sorry I missed you guys last night... I was already deep in the crowd when Sin arrived and then we bailed so fast, I was pulling onto Mill when he texted afterward. My wife had to be at work in Flagstaff at 6am.

Came into town around 6:30pm...it was fun watching the U2 traffic crawl in the opposite direction as we cruised all the way to Tempe with no problems. (slowed down at the 51/202 junction for maybe 30 seconds.)

Crowd was awesome except for one prick up front. This guy had already almost been kicked out once. He started doing this constant pressure thing- just pushing into me and my wife for like 5 minutes straight , but not in the same way the crowd was surging. I was holding my ground, and had my arm crooked around my wife. So now when he pushes, he's pushing my elbow into his ribs. (Or where his ribs should be...I'm a fat fuck, but at least you can identify at least a few of my ribs). When he couldn't get anywhere, he changes tactics by trying to pick a fight. "Stop elbowing me." Unfortunately it worked, because my wife moved out of the way and I had to take a "don't get punched" stance...so he just walked in front of me and turned around. So my options are punch him in the back of the head 3 feet from a security guard, or move. There's always got to be one guy who spoils the fun.

Gogol killed, of course, and Apostle Of Hustle was interesting...watch for them in the Gobi at 2pm Friday or something like that.

no worries man. i knew you had to bail quickly. that's rough, having to get all the back to flag (or close to it, at least) and then work at 6am. i gotta do that tonight....it'll be 1am before we get back and then gotta work early next morning. it'll all be worth it, though.

i'm sure we'll have another opportunity to meet up. that sux about the prick up front, though. there is always one. the crowd around me wasn't too bad. i had to hang back about halfway so i could record. the crowd was much larger than I thought it was going to be, so it was an easy job last night. ;) still haven't listened to it yet, though. hopefully it turned out good.

My work is forcing people to take time off during the holiday season this year. 56 PTO hours are to be used even if this forces you into the negative. NOT COOL.

What does "in the negative" mean? You don't get paid? You use vacation time from next year?

Mr. Dylanja
10-21-2009, 12:25 PM
We used to get 6 sick days each year, Paid Time Off was something entirely different. They took the sick days away and compensated by (barely) increasing the rate we accrue PTO. Now sick days are considered part of our PTO. They're making everyone use 56 hours of PTO from 10/1/09 to 1/1/10 whether you have the PTO or not. Let's say I have 30 hrs PTO, I'll be an -26 when this is all said and done. So yes, I have to accrue just to get back to even before starting to earn vacation time again.

My company recently split into two seperate companies and apparently they want to have their books "as clean as possible" before starting the new year.

Going into the negative has never been approved by HR in the past so it will be interesting to see what happens early next year when someone gets sick and doesn't have the PTO because they were forced to use it now.

This was all brought down a week after Employee Appreciation Week.

amyzzz
10-21-2009, 12:28 PM
We get candy, ice cream,or popcorn during Employee Appreciation Week at my work. Tee hee.

Also, we get all our vacation weeks and personal days at once January 1st, thank God. None of this accruing shit. (yay union)
Of course, it's not even Halloween yet, and I've used up all my time until January comes 'round again.

So I am in the process of moving and have had Cox Communications for cable/internet/phone. My bill usually runs around $200/month for the whole package. The only perk I have to my cable is I have one DVR, no movie channels or anything, just the typical digital cable channels. I hate Cox and was looking for another optioin. My new landlord had direct tv before he moved out of the condo I am moving into so he sent me a referral which gives him and me $10/per month discount for 5 months. So now I am getting the NFL Sunday Ticket, all the movie channels, a DVR and quite a few extra standard channels to what I had with Cox for $55/month. This all seems way too good to be true. Does anyone else have Direct TV? Is there anything I should watch for. I don't want to end up with some crazy bill in a few months and then lose my ability to be a couch potato.

No, sports have to be watched in real time or someone will tell the score and make boys very angry so that won't work. Plus, my computer took a big crap and won't even start now. My son apparently went to a few too many porn sites. So I am not even getting internet until I can afford to get my computer fixed. Not illegal; it's a right-to-work state.

Shitty way to treat your employees, and if they were smart, they'd stop this nonsense; when the economy improves, they'll probably see an exodus of employees leaving for greener pastures.

We always have to use PTO for sick days, its bullshit.

Depends on how much you get. My wife used to get, like, almost 7 weeks of PTO a year, and it constantly accrued. She got 10 hours every other week. That included Holidays, but they only closed 3 days a year. The rest of the hours you could do whatever you wanted with. She used to work all the holidays. She would save enough so we could take a 2 week vacation once a year, and save another week just in case she got really sick. Still had tons of time left, so anytime she got stressed out...4 day weekend.

Then the place shut down. :(

I really enjoyed the Pogues last night. Loved the setlist, loved the band. and "Bottle of Smoke" came off great.

gotta give amy credit though: Shane MacGowen is a drunken buffoon. The fact that the band started an hour later than it had planned to couldn't have helped that situation at all. He forgot the words in the middle of "White City" and another song, and then he lost his place on "Transmetropolitan" despite the fact that he was reading from a lyrics sheet. Spider Stacy looked like he was about ready to kill him at several points, while the rest of the band pretty much ignored him. Definitely felt like a marriage of convenience: Shane-less Pogues don't sound nearly as good, and Pogues-less Shane doesn't either.

Wow, really? Not at all looking forward to the move, its deep in Scottsdale and I am in North Phoenix. I have been there for almost 5 years, who is your friend?

I wasn't drunk actually. I was just jumping up and down and I landed on someone's foot.
The X-Rays came back negative. Apparently there still might be some ligament damage. Oh well. Hooray prescription vicodin!

nice. glad to hear everything worked out for the best. ;)

We got an offer on our house today...we might be homeless by Thanksgiving. My wife's job situation still isn't settled- if she gets the job she's trying to, we'll be wanting to move down around Val Vista and the 60. If that falls through, we'll still move down, but it won't really matter where, we'll just look for a temporary rental.

If anyone knows of any available rental houses (or could recommend people who could find me one), let me know...the catch is that we have two big dogs.

Clip from Tuesday's Gogol show. Crap sound, but cool anyway. This is a new song, right? Good to see them crank up the "punk" side of the Gypsy Punk.

Brother Ali and Evidence were really good last night. Best hip-hop show I have seen in a while, didn't really get boring like most hip-hop shows do. Plus the Blunt Club actually got out around 12:30, and 2:00 am which is a plus. Oh and I almost forgot to mention that Tash from Tha Liks came out, nice guest appearance.
