See, Tom, when you complain about the Tucsonness of the thread it just pushes back that Tucson talk and other people start asking the same questions. Though, to be fair, I'mn't entirely sure Datarock is in Tucson.

Mark there was a discussion on Datarock starting about two pages back and yes, people're going.

I'm responding to your post so you don't get upset that your Pogues thunder was completely undercut by the GZA announcement (barring Micah's post). However, I do not believe I will be attending that show. First off, how much is it and what day of the week is it? Secondly, I think I've only listened to one song of theirs, and I don't remember it. (That's my wink-wink, nudge-nudge to upload a mix of their music for my listening enjoyment.) Will that satiate your fragile ego, Tom, so you don't feel like this thread is continuing its ever-quickening descent into a bastardized version of its former self? :D

well, this guy starts taking pics of me & my girlfriends. then he decides to come over and talk to me & amy. he just wouldn't leave us alone, was making really goofy conversation and at one point just reached out and grabbed my waist. at one point he said he lived in germany TWO YEARS, but i called complete bullshit. i said "my name is ivy" in german, and he said i wasn't speaking german. i told him i was done, over and over, but he wouldn't walk away. so i started counting to ten in german very loudly and he wouldn't leave until i finally walked away and my girlfriend made our apologies, lol.

also during this entire insane conversation, a metal looking dude with long blonde hair (at the fucking blunt club, wtf) comes over JUST to tell me i have a pretty laugh.

sometimes, i miss having pants around, lol. this shit never happens with him.

So as of mid December Modified is switching gears (http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/uponsun/2009/09/kimber_lanning_parting_ways_wi.php). Kimber is leaving and the space is being remodeled to better showcase the art.

Modified Arts will be more of a traditional gallery, though Adam will still be doing shows. However, we must tell you that the big, indie rock shows you've come to know and love at Modified will have to find another home. The programming will be changing to better accommodate a gallery, so the slant will be more experimental and progressive.

The "big" part is kind of hilarious but Modified closing right after my birthday is sad.

Not a smart move for Modified if you ask me. It's the one thing that differentiated itself from the other little galleries downtown. I bet the Trunk Space will pick up some of the slack.

mountmccabe
09-28-2009, 08:37 AM
It's going to be an odd transition. And yeah, Trunk Space other little places around will pick up some but they won't be able to handle many of the shows Modified now gets. The Titus Andronicus show on Saturday had maybe 90 people there; that'd be sold out at Trunk Space, so that'd be OK but any more and people get turned away.

100 is a very light show for (say) the Rhythm Room, but it'll have to be more than just the Rhythm Room taking the slightly larger shows because the Rhythm Room has a show nearly every night as it is.

There's gotta be somewhere in Tempe or Mesa or Scottsdale... but those places are all far away and lame. Closer than Tucson, though.

So as of mid December Modified is switching gears (http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/uponsun/2009/09/kimber_lanning_parting_ways_wi.php). Kimber is leaving and the space is being remodeled to better showcase the art.

The "big" part is kind of hilarious but Modified closing right after my birthday is sad.

This really, really, really sucks...

meh, the only show i saw at modified was freezepop. it was a cute lil venue, but i guess what i'm saying is this news doesn't really affect me. and who are these "big" indie rock bands anyways?! lol

The White Stripes
the Decemberists
Rilo Kiley
Iron & Wine
Wolf Parade*
the Arcade Fire*
Why?
the National*

have all played Modified.

And they've all come back to Phoenix and played the Clubhouse or the Marquee (and in the case of the White Stripes, Mesa Amp and the Dodge too.)

Well, other than the asterisked bands; they haven't been back to Phoenix at all.

Oh and did anyone see this in the Filter Phoenix newsletter that arrived this morning?:

Live Picks
...
NOVEMBER
1183 Phoenix @ Hollywood Alley

Yes, it says 1183? What does this mean? I highly doubt Phoenix is playing the Hollywood Alley but can someone get to the bottom of this? I think it's a typo and should read 11/3, but Phoenix would most definitely be playing a venue the size of the Marquee Theater at this point.

EDIT: Checked Pollstar and they're in London on 10/28, and then in Sweden on 11/7. This has really diminished all hope I had for the show at this point.

There's a lot of that. And, honestly, I'm OK with that. Hell, I'm hardly interested in seeing the non asterisked bands at the venues they're playing now-a-days.

There're a good number of bands that've grown to play the Rhythm Room or such but I didn't want to dilute the list.

And, for the record, of those I only actually went to the Decemberists and Why? at Modified, though I had seen Sam Beam several times before that Iron & Wine show (and I would've gone but it sold out before I got there.) I thought about most of the others but decided against it.

I had no idea about either Modified or the White Stripes in 1999, though.

I wonder why Modified is 'switching gears'. I wonder if someone could make money opening a place that catered to this crowd. I wonder if that place would be even better if it served beer.

This was my immediate thought as well. And that some Phoenix board member should moonlight as an emerging music venue manager.

But why would the Modified drop the music side of things if it was profitable? Even with Kimber leaving, they could always find a new person to do that side of things.

I bet a new venue of around the same size in about the same area would do really well.

But why would the Modified drop the music side of things if it was profitable? Even with Kimber leaving, they could always find a new person to do that side of things.

They do have a person who is going to do the music side of things but that does cut down on the viability as a gallery. I've seen many shows in there where people are leaning up against paintings or playing with them. Recently they've shifted to taking paintings down in the evenings when there are shows and putting them back up for the next morning as a gallery.

Having smaller shows means fewer people pushed against the walls and less traffic in general, I suppose.

I laughed at the "big" in there, too. They do get some shows that pull in 175+ and I don't know of anywhere else downtown that can handle that.

Well, maybe the Phix? I don't know that I've seen close to that in there, though.

At any rate, yeah, we're talking maybe a few a month. Though it's difficult to predict who's gonna turnout.

Ok, who's going to !!! tonight?

Sarah and I are going!

Datarock was fun last night, but too many sound issues made the show kind of crappy. The opening band, Esser, was good, but sounded like they blew out the speakers when playing bass-heavy songs (speakers making the dreaded 'farting' noise). It seemed like every band member from both Datarock and Esser at some point during the night were signaling or yelling to the soundman to adjust the levels.

About 2/3rds of the way through the Datarock set the drummer's monitor caught on fire and smoked-up the Rhythm Room. It took the dreaded sound guy forever to figure out what piece of equipment was causing the problem.

It was great talking to Mark and Micah, both totally cool.

EDIT: I really really hope they don't have issues with the sound tonight after all the troubles the bands were having last night.

faxman75
09-29-2009, 08:13 AM
Good seeing you WCP and Micah. Yep, lots of sound issues. I thought Esser was pretty bad. I didn't enjoy their simple songs at all and half of it is pre recorded sounds or so it seemed. They kinda gave me a head ache and bored me.

Datarock was fun. I would say there were about 60 people in the venue. I did a head count of the over 21 side and it was under 40 of us. The show really seemed to fall apart at the end when they had the burning problem. I was happy to hear Computer Camp Love and Dance With my Daddy though. Fun stuff.

Also 8PM start time apparently means doors at 8:30 Esser started at 10:00. Blah. I would see Datarock again though. I don't blame them. The sax player is killer! So much fun to watch these guys play.

A jazzy saxophone wailed as The Killers arrived on stage at the Dodge Theatre Monday night, each bathed in yellow light.Guitarist Dave Keuning, drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. and bassist Mark Stoermer all looked the part of disinterested rock stars as they grooved their way into "Joy Ride," but it wasn't until frontman Brandon Flowers hopped on stage and struck a pouty pose atop his monitor that the true star had arrived.

Though it took them a while to get the crowd warmed up, The Killers proved they really know how to put on a show with an extravagant, hit-laden performance that left everyone cheering for more.

Set against frantic lights, explosions and massive video screens, Flowers pranced around the stage delivering his vocals with breathless shouts and exaggerated gusto while his bandmate hammered out each tune with pinpoint precision.

Originally scheduled to play Phoenix in mid-April, this re-scheduled show found The Killers leaning heavily on their latest album "Day & Age," which featured songs steeped in every sleazy lounge act to ever come out of the band's hometown of Las Vegas.

Pulling out the big guns early, Flowers crooned out the grammatically enraging single "Human" as the second song of the night, while speakers appeared on the video screens and pulsed along with the techno beat. The light show for "For Reasons Unknown" was dazzling, if slightly blinding and possibly seizure-inducing, and Flowers played bass for the song will Stoermer clicked away on the guitar and sang in a creepy low voice.

Perhaps due to the Dodge's assigned seating or Flowers' somewhat flat delivery of many of his early vocals, the crowd seemed pretty mellow for the first part of the show, with everyone singing along and cheering, but never matching the energy that was being delivered on stage.

"Is it a Monday night? You people sure are making us feel like it's a Monday night," said Flowers as he looked out into the crowd. "In Killers' Land it's always the weekend and I want this to feel like it Saturday night."

With that, the Killers launched into their cover of Joy Division's "Shadowplay," which didn't exactly inspire a Saturday night vibe. But once the synth line for "Somebody Told Me" hit the speakers, the crowd finally seemed to warm up and start dancing around.

From that point on, the Killers were unstoppable, with the crowd roaring along to tunes like "Smile Like You Mean It" and "Spaceman," and joining in while Flowers and Keuning played a charmingly sloppy version of the Elvis classic "Can't Help Falling in Love."

Although nearly every song played out like the climax of the night, all starting out small and building to a dramatic blowout near the end, The Killers saved their big moment for "All These Things That I've Done." With nearly everyone in the packed theater singing "I've got soul/but I'm not a soldier" and Flowers pumping his fist in the air, clouds of white confetti shot from the stage and showered down on the crowd as the song reached a fevered pitch.

"I feel like it's Saturday night," Flowers said as he smiled into his microphone, before they launched into an encore of "Sam's Town" and "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine." Now that the crowd was straining to get closer and the cheers were nearly constant, the over-the-top lights and stage antics didn't seem so ridiculous. And when they finally closed the night with an extremely loud version of "When You Were Young," the crowd seemed to embrace every chord, as a rain storm of sparks filled the stage and all that rock star posing seemed perfectly natural.

Allow me to third the sentiments on last night's performance by !!! being, to paraphrase, killer. "Heart of Hearts" was fucking awesome, the highlight of the show for me. Sahara '10, please, thank you.
For everyone who's wondering, that extremely shitty band who played immediately before !!! were Indian Jewelry. They should have booked a tour with A Place to Bury Strangers instead. (Not saying that APTBS is shit and should thus have a shitty opener, just their styles are more closely aligned.)
Cave Singers were good and have quite a bit of potential to headline dates in the near future. From my vantage point in the bathroom during their last song, the crowd was roaring for them. And finally there was Lightning Dust, who were the first band we caught, and I enjoyed them. They would do well to open for Heartless Bastards.

Nice seeing Mr. and Mrs. westcoastpirate again, as well as Senor Bogaloo. Oh, and Mark (faxman), why didn't you say hi? I know you were busy with DJing and all that, but we were right in front of you, dude. A simple nod of acknowledgment is all I ask. (This will be funnier when someone posts a picture of the DJ.)

Got sucker punched by a $50 cab fare that the Somali cab driver didn't tell me was standard from JFK to any location in Manhattan until after we'd left the airport, dropped my bag off with Gonshman, walked around for a half hour, ate a margherita pizza that I suspect was not representative of what NY pizza is famous for, got caught in a torrential downpour, hid out in some punk store with a mannequin in the entry way wearing a gas mask and nothing on her anatomically correct nipples, dashed over to a Duane Mart (think Walgreen's) where a team of firefighters barged past me with a gurney to attend to some lady, tried to find a Wells Fargo or Wachovia ATM to withdraw some cash but was unsuccessful in the attempt, saw a healthy line forming in front of Webster Hall so I got in it, 17 people back (I counted), got rained on for an hour, listened to Fever Ray through the ear buds of the kid standing in front of me, got let in around 7:30, thought about getting merchandise but decided against it, went to the restroom where the lights were immediately turned off on me, waited there in the dark because I really had to go, had the lights come back on but as black lights, meaning my urine looked fluorescent green, went upstairs to wait in ANOTHER line to get into the venue, this time waiting for 30 minutes (at least it was out of the rain), felt that it was hot and was thankful it had been raining or else I'd have felt even hotter, got inside the venue and managed to get a spot 2 people removed from the rail, stood there for 2 hours before the opening act, Vuk, came on, enjoyed two of her eight songs but clapped politely anyway because she was clearly nervous and had probably never played such a high profile gig before or to so many people, stood for another 30 minutes before Fever Ray came on, danced and stood through her hour-long set, felt that a blister was forming on my left foot from standing in the same position for so many hours, dreaded the possibility of an encore even though I really enjoyed her performance and would have liked to have heard more (possibly even a Knife song or two, although I knew that was highly unlikely), left the venue, retrieved my bag from Gonshman's, walked around for a couple hours, got accosted for money by a shirtless bald white man with a gray beard, couldn't locate any restaurant worthwhile and within my budget in Union Square, felt like my legs were on fire especially in light of my intensive leg workout from Saturday, wound up in Bar None, where I ordered 3 Blue Moons and chatted with the bouncer, who regaled me with a story of doing security for LL Cool J in Africa and whose reservation back home from Johannesburg 6 weeks ago was lost and the only seat on the flight available was a $6,000 first class seat that Mr. Cool J begrudgingly paid for, that's how important his services were, walked to the 14th St./3rd Ave subway station, took the L train to Broadway Junction, took the A train to Howard Beach, took the AirTram (I think) to JFK, paying $7.25 over an hour and twenty minutes to return to the airport, a cost difference of minus $42.75 and time difference of plus fifty minutes compared to the cab experience at the beginning of this journey, changed in the bathroom at the airport, printed my boarding pass at 4:00 am NY time (1:00 am PHX time), had trouble locating security since it hadn't opened yet, got in line, 5th, and waited for 45 minutes while the TSA agents putzed about, got through security minutes after 5:00 am, had a muffin and Coke Zero for "breakfast" for $5.75, read pages 62-77 of David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, listened to Mono on my iPod while playing Klondike, was rude to an old man I mistakenly thought was white, received my standby seat at 6:15 am, got seated next to that old seemingly white man, read 5 pages of Infinite Jest while the plane sat on the runway, the cause of which, according to the captain, was that the computer had needed to be rebooted and it was taking its sweet time, got asked by the old man why we weren't in the air yet, and this was when I discovered that he wasn't just some curmudgeonly old coot with a sense of entitlement (or at least not an American one) as his English was limited, to say the least, and slept for a couple hours after the plane finally took off.

So, I didn't find a thread on it and didn't want to make a new one, but I was hoping the people in this thread could recommend me some of their favorite movies that have to do with music.

This includes documentaries, concert films/live shows, fictional movies centered around bands/artists, movies like High Fidelity where music is a primary focus, movies made by musicians/about musicians. Really anything. I'm trying to take advantage of my school library, so I'd appreciate any and all recommendations.

Modified was packed last night for The Dodos.

Miniature Tigers sounded good; the place was packed by the time they were on, too. I had not seen them - or anyone else playing - before and they were better than expected. Overall their sound is rather tame but they keep it interesting.

The Ruby Suns had serious sound issues. And since they use so much electronics/pre-recorded/whatever to do what they do they came off pretty bad.

It seemed strange that the Dodos had only three people on stage and that only one of them was singing and/or playing guitar. One guy played a kit and one guy played miscellanous percussion, including a set that is a vibraphone or bells or I don't know what because I forget the difference that he played mostly with mallets but sometimes with bows, working the ends.

But yeah, lots of rhythmic work going on. It was fun. The crowd seemed to be enjoying it a lot. They played for about 75 minutes.

From my collection:

Basement Jaxx: The Videos
Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man
Moby: Play
Nirvana: MTV Unplugged (which I don't actually have, Christmas stocking stuffer hint, Jennifer)
Portishead: Roseland New York
The Prodigy: Their Law
The Work of Director Michel Gondry (and for that matter, the Works of Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, Mark Romanek, and Anton Corbijn, though Gondry's is the only one I own)

Then there's also a Chemical Brothers DVD, perhaps also called "The Singles," but I don't have it. Like the Prodigy, Moby, and Basement Jaxx discs, though, it features both music videos and live performances.

Oh! And I just remembered, AIR: Eating, Sleeping, Waiting and Playing.

BTW, I was reminded last night while talking to John about Fever Ray that I need to sendspace you the Knife albums. Uploading today, promise.

Rick - I just love the account of your NYC trip. Have you been before and would you go back? Why didn't you get a real slice of pizza? I had not been to New York before. I believe I will be back, perhaps on December 16 or thereabouts. I hear there may be a movie I want to see playing.
It was inadvertent that I didn't get a "real" slice of pizza; I went into a pizza restaurant, thought the margherita sounded the best, and when I got it, it was a really thin crust and didn't have a lot of sauce. It was good, I just don't think that's what people are talking about when they talk about New York pizza.
We leave for London on Saturday. Or perhaps Friday night, depending on the flights to Charlotte. That's really a subject for Jennifer to cover, but it's boring and irrelevant so I suspect this will be the only discussion of it. But long ramble short, leave Saturday, return Friday. One week, not two.
I did take a few pictures of Webster Hall and will post the ones of the marquee saying "Fever Ray" later tonight. I didn't really take any inside because it was my first time using the camera and I didn't know which setting to use to take a good indoor shot. Besides that, I've got a reputation to uphold about not taking pics during concerts, what with all my bitching on the subject.
I'm glad and amused that you are now noticing and bothered by people taking pics at concerts with their iPhones. See what I mean? It's always been there, it just took my complaining about it to open your eyes to it. What a gift I've bestowed upon you, huh? The gift of observational annoyance.

Nice seeing you last night, John, and yes, the Dodos were very good. I could have been disappointed because pretty much none of my favorite tracks off Visiter or Time to Die were played -- songs like "Winter," "The Strums," "Joe's Waltz," "God?" -- but the stuff they did play was enjoyable anyway, even if I didn't recognize it, and that is usually not the case for me. I fantasized afterward of a Dodos -> Heartless Bastards -> Okkervil River -> Arcade Fire assembly at Coachella next year, which would actually only be acceptable if the sun weren't beating down as mercilessly upon us as it generally seems to during the day. But even if it were, oh, what bliss!

Margherita is real pizza. As to whether or not the place you went to was any good, I have no idea. But yes, the crust is supposed to be extremely thin and crunchy and there shouldn't be much sauce.

In my initial post on the subject, I described it as a piece of pizza that I suspected "was not representative of what NY pizza is famous for." (Blame unknown for bringing the word "real" into the conversation.) Is margherita pizza the kind that you're talking about when you tell people that the pizza on the west coast is shit compared to New York pizza? I'm not debating the merits of the food itself, because as I noted in my follow up, I liked it and was actually glad that it didn't have a lot of sauce. Just asking if my assessment was correct that it isn't the kind of pizza that made New York pizza's reputation what it is.

I know margherita is a real pizza; I love that shit. I used the word real in reference to an authentic NY slice. For example, when I went to Chicago I had to try a deep dish pizza with sausage patty. For the record, I highly recommend it. I am not even a fan of sausage pizza but this pizza was unbelievably good - a thin sausage patty across the entire pizza. I have never seen that anywhere on the west coast.

I completely forgot about your trip to NY for your movie, Rick! How long will that trip be?

I've seen Built to Spill 3 times live and while I love them on album, they have yet to impress me live.

I have really enjoyed their live shows. Not enough to drive to Tucson on a Wednesday, but I'd be there if they were here.

I plan on going to the Mono show. The Aggrolites play Plush the 16th. Junior Boys are also at Plush the 17th. I won't be at Junior Boys, but maybe the Aggrolites.

I'm going to Mono, Junior Boys, and APTBS. Strongly considering Dirty Projectors too.

We should definitely meet earlier in the evening before Mono for dinner and/or drinks then. On a somewhat related note, I'm really craving the bloody Mary bar at Congress right now.

so being that my uncle comes from a long line of ranchers & is also a doctor of veterinary medicine, he is a member of the mountain oyster club down in tucson and took us to a nice dinner there. it's a members-only club for ranchers in the area. real nice place. had my first mountain oysters... they were actually pretty good :)

I can't find any info.

There is a gap in their tour from OCT 29-NOV 6, so who knows...

Oct 28 2009 8:00P
O2 ACADEMY BRIXTON London, London and South East

Nov 7 2009 8:00P
DEBASER MEDIS Stockholm, Stockholms lšn

I would be surprised if Hollywood Alley could pull such a booking as Phoenix.

That's what I'm saying! Unless this is some special event similar to Snow Patrol playing the Clubhouse earlier this year, I doubt they would play somewhere like Hollywood Alley at this point. But there's no information anywhere.

ALL I GOTS IS MY BALLS & MY WORD

sorry for leaving, that was kinda lame. i didn't think it would go so long either. i mean, most shows at gammage are out by eleven, so i really didn't think it would be that long of a show and we got there RIGHT at 8:30 as i'm used to gammage also not allowing people in the auditorium during performances sometimes.

the event had potentional, but was quite half-assed. why didn't anyone check to see if there were subs at the venue? why was there a freaking slideshow of pictures of art & people dancing instead of ACTUALLY HAVING SOME ART & PEOPLE DANCING ON THE STAGE?!?!?!

i guess i just expected more. *shrugs*

What's IVYSAUR supposed to do without the BOOM BOOM?

No worries, it only got worse. Sound issues and a shortened/cut set by the Gza.

I used to go to a ton of shows at Hollywood Alley in the 90's when I lived in Phoenix, and now that I live in Mesa, I don't think I've gone there once. :( Too many familial obligations and such. I would LOVE to see Phoenix there. OMG.

edit: Hollywood Alley is in MESA, in case anyone doesn't know -- which is why it's weird that I haven't gone there since I've lived here.

Interesting. It seems highly unlikely that they would travel from the UK to the US when they have less than a week before returning overseas for more dates. Maybe if this was a festival or something with loads of exposure or a big pay day but not some small southwest club tour with 3-4 shows, if that. It just doesn't make sense.

Do you have a link? Can you post an image? I would kill to see them at Hollywood Alley!

There is no way Phoenix could ever play the Hollywood Alley.

EDIT: Girl in a Coma (from Texas) and Black Gold are scheduled for November 3rd. The Hollywood Alley (http://www.myspace.com/hollywoodalley) myspace has an upcoming shows calender.
