Not sure if you guys heard of the culture pass yet but I figured i would share the link.

http://www.showup.com/culturepass

If you want to pick up a Culture Pass, you need to show up at your closest library branch when it opens that day. Or, that's the way it was at the Ironwood Branch about 1 month ago. I stopped by on a Sunday about 5 minutes before they opened to pick up some stuff on hold. There were about 50 people outside the doors waiting for the branch to open. A librarian came out before they opened and told everyone who was there to get a Culture Passes to line up on the left side. I think 45 of the 50 people there lined-up on the left side for Culture Passes. The librarian also said they have limited passes available each day so not everyone would get one.

It's a great offer and it seems there are a lot of people taking advantage of it. I recommend if you want to get a Culture Pass to get to your local library branch early. But it may be easier to get a Culture Pass during the week, though, as I would expect many of those people to be at work (or maybe not with the unemployment rate).

What's going on in AZ this weekend? I will be out Friday to Sunday in Tucson. I'm attending the dj comp that Adam is competing in on Friday so that really only leaves Saturday open. Rick, Jen, Micah this is my notice to you that I will be in your state. Another visit in October is still being considered for APTBS and MONO but will probably be from that Sunday till Thursday.

You should hit up Phoenix on your way back home. You're driving, I'm assuming? Lunch/dinner/drinks can be had. And if you're going to spend an evening here, I can get Jen to look into something interesting for us to do. (Although it'll probably just end up being a night at the Bikini Lounge as usual. Not saying that's a bad thing, just saying.)

gah! Mark, I am so sorry. I did not intend to exclude anyone!! Adam is higgybaby and it is a dj competition (I was too lazy and on my iphone so typing it all out didn't happen).

Yes I am driving but not my car. I am actually going to tag along for the drive with my friend who lives near me and is from Tucson. He is going out last minute to visit his sister who recently got diagnosed with MS (last Thursday to be exact, same day I got laid off so it really put shit into perspective for me). Anyway, we're taking his car and he is dropping me off at my grandmother's in the western foothills of Tucson. I will be relying on friends to taxi me around the town so getting up to Phoenix will be up to those with wheels.

Jenn - that is a beautiful idea :)

Someone please explain this to me.

Let us take it as a given that Phoenix has sucky shows, for the most part. We're not NY or LA.

So when a show comes to town that I am excited about, it's an occasion. I go to less than one a month now.

So I was looking into this Monsters of Folk tour because, you know, I like MMJ and Bright Eyes, and I think M Ward is cool, and I've heard good things about the album. right? right. They are playing the Orpheum on Oct 21. cool.

except that's the same fucking night the Pogues are playing the Marquee. I have loved the Pogues for 20+ years and never seen them live. This is my one time.

rules for sand diggers, towel heads, and gypsies....... - $2900 (phoenix)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: 2009-09-17, 9:03AM MST

yea, we all watch each others ads. yea we're all trying to make a living in this business. yea, we have some rules.........
1. dont call before 8 or after 9. do you really think that it turns me on to listen to you at 2 o'clock in the morning? it doesn't, i need to rest. call during business hours.
2. dont call me up on a car that is 5900 and offer 2200. its not going to happen. i'm just not that stupid.
3. try to speak some form of understandable english. get some books and tapes and study. there is an "h" in the word think!!
4. please shower before you come. i dont care about your tradition. foul smelling cologne does not make you smell good. you need to scrub first.
5. dont tell me you will pay me some now, and the rest later and expect to take the car. its an insult to even ask.
6. i know one of you idiots will flag this ad, but you need to shape up, you're ruining our business. its not your country, its my country, live by the rules!!!
7. always remember.....a towel is not a hat!!!!!

posted by mike. some of you know me, some you wish you did, and if you guys keep this stuff up, some of you will wish you didnt........

Seats are pretty good, they're on the aisle in the corner of the lower level. I think they were $66 a piece after all of the fees.

Regarding the Chemical Brothers, where exactly do you mean by "here"? If it's Arizona, then the answer is no. They haven't been in Arizona since 2002, if they were even here then. (If I recall correctly, they were due to play a show with Sasha & Digweed and Paul Oakenfold in Phoenix right before Coachella. I was poor as dirt and couldn't afford the trek, especially since the friend I was going to Coachella with and I couldn't even afford to get a hotel for the fest & we just ended up sleeping in the car at a rest station during the middle of the night.)
Yeah, Ghostland was at the Rialto in February. And you're right, they're unlikely to sell out quickly. For one thing, this is Arizona we're talking about here. Shows, if they sell out, tend to do so slowly.

Sorry, GPS, I'd rather be run over by a car than attend a NASCAR event. If you're open to hanging out beforehand, though, perhaps we could meet for dinner/drinks.

I don't think you know what the word "appropriate" means if you think it was an inappropriate response.

Sorry, but it's an incredibly stupid right-wing stance..."oh, those cameras...Big Brother...those damn liberals." How is having cameras any different than having cops stashed out along the freeway, hiding behind bushes? It's not. Or having a cop stashed in front of a toll road and then at the end of the toll road, and they'll pull you over if you get to the end of the toll road before you were supposed to. It's not that hard to figure out that if you don't break the law, you won't get flashed (ahem, Faxy). In addition, everyone that lives here knows that you don't have to pay it unless they can prove you've been served with a ticket.

Besides, I drive on that goddamn I-10 EVERY DAY for 20 miles each way. I don't know if there are any statistics to back it up, but I can tell you that a) there seem to be a lot less accidents on the road, especially going into work in the morning and b) there seem to be a lot less speeding assholes that weave in and out of traffic because they're SO important that they have to get somewhere.

I'm nowhere NEAR a right-wing kinda guy, don't know where you got that from. I said nothing about conservative or liberal.

The way I see it, it's much different than cops hiding out. Because the cops aren't ALWAYS there. If you're on the toll road late at night chances are a cop isn't gonna be hiding out so you're probably ok.

It's like if they installed cameras to take pictures of your vehicle to make sure you're wearing your seatbelt. Just seems a little much to me, a little intrusive.

I have really bad PMS. I almost cried because Rick was eating some rosemary bread that is supposed to go with the lasagna I made last night. I need to go hide in my room.

nice Tom: well Jen you are fine, just realize that these sorts of things are going to naturally happen between two people together, and that when it's a deeply emotional relationship the reactions are also going to tend to be emotional. Just make sure you have good communication in place so that you can work out whatever issues arise -- because, they will arise.

mean Tom: You spent all that time and effort making that bread, because you wanted it to be a special dinner, and he just shoves it in his face without even bothering to ask. what a selfish prick.

So is there anything exciting going on this weekend around town? It will be my first paycheck in awhile and I want to do something other then play free poker, I have some party supplies I will be partaking in and don't want to just lay in my bed and watch the fan make faces at me again. Any ideas?

yes, just come! a few of us will be in LA on Wed. Nov. 11th for feather's bday/Royksopp then train it out here for some good times.

Thought I read a post that said Girl Talk sold out the Rialto late 2008 or early 2009?

damn close to selling out. I didnt go; too many bros and hos for me to get my proper groove on. that and girl talk is a wiener

SOLD OUT GIRL TALK = FAIL!

1) What bar? It had better be one of the following: Kon Tiki, Plush, or Buffet.

2) Datarock is Monday. I might go.

not a bar you wanna go to cap. i work in a sleazy dark gay bar where women and straight men are not often treated very nicely by the regulars. its a place for old men to hook up mostly.

Not IBTs.

Hmm. It can't be the Biz since you're the wrong gender and that place is far from sleazy and dark (or at least it was the last time I was there, about 4 years ago). Is it on Stone near Grant? Like, right across the street from Adult Expectations? If so, I've been there once. Don't recall the name but my friend Milly was meeting a friend there because her friend was doing some drag queen show. It was really piddly, some dinky-looking amateur hour bullshit in the back patio. And when I was walking to my car, I got solicited by a black transvestite prostitute. (Too bad I didn't have any cash on me. :nono)
It ain't the Salty Dog, is it?

I must have walked past the Shanty a thousand times but have never gone inside. No idea why, there just hasn't ever been a reason to. Nobody I've been with has ever said, "Hey, there's the Shanty! Let's go there!"
I didn't realize the Buffet had Happy Minute at 6, too. Let's hope if we do that again, I don't black out on my double Black Russian like I did last time. That shit was fucking painful and embarrassing. (Threw up about a dozen times and couldn't figure out how to put a key in the door.)

My favorite IBTs story: New Year's 2005, I was with my friends Sarah and David as well as a couple of other people, Jesse, Toni, and Toni's friend whose name I can't remember. Jesse, who had long, pony-tailed hair, got plastered immediately on Bacardi 151 and was headbanging when we were standing outside. The couple in front of us felt water hitting them and looked back to see what the cause was: the sweat flying off of Jesse as he grooved to "Auld Lang Syne."
Toni's friend also got embarrassingly wasted, cutting in front of the 30 women in line to use the lone women's toilet because she had to vomit. The girl next in line begrudgingly let her in front of her. After doing her business and exiting, Toni's friend was suddenly struck by the need to vomit again. Alas, it was too late; the girl next in line had already entered and locked the door behind her. Undeterred, Toni's friend went to the men's restroom and, finding the toilet unavailable, took refuge in one of the urinals. She was thus kicked out, taking Toni with her since Toni was the DD.
In the rush to leave the bar, Toni was unable to locate Jesse, who had also arrived with her. He turned up the following day with quite a tale to tell. The first thing he remembered after, well, pretty much his first shot, was being in the shower. Someone entered the bathroom so he said, "Hold on, Toni, I'm just about done." So he finished his shower and got dressed and when he went out into the living room, at 5:30 in the morning, there was a man standing with his back to him. The man was on the phone, apparently talking to the cops, saying, "I don't know who he is, he just came in my house and started taking a shower." Jesse somehow managed to get the guy to let him go outside before the cops showed up and made his way back to Toni's house.

It's really a shame that I don't hang out with losers like that anymore.

I thought that AJ's book thing was on the 24th?

Just reading what I had missed the last few weeks...looks like no one answered...

Thurs, Sept 24th- Blunt Club, Tempe
Fri, Sept 25th- Mad Italian, Flagstaff
Sat, Sept 26th- NOS Event Center, San Bernadino.

I'll be at the Flag thing if anybody's coming up, though I have a few other places to get to, so I'll probably be gone before it gets good. :(

Any hip hop heads should see this guy. At first I thought he was just another clone of Aesop Rock/Slug(Atmosphere)/Sage Francis, but he is unique unto himself. I would describe his style as avant garde hip hop. He really got Friday night of Coachella 07 going for me, after a lackluster afternoon.

Phoenix Symphony - 9/24, 9/26, 9/27

Per Phoenix Symphony email:

Guest conductor Alondra de la Parra makes her Phoenix Symphony debut with Dvorák’s jubilant and robust Symphony No. 8. Hailed by The New York Times for her "incisive gestures...eliciting a vibrantly nuanced performance," Ms. de la Parra will also lead the orchestra for Chávez’ exotic and sensuous Sinfonia India and Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
