I chalk it up to he's trying to conserve his voice because their tour is so grueling.

Fine, let Martin sing more. That would make my wife happy...she hates Dave.

I enjoyed seeing Dungen at the rr last night. Said hi to John, Amy and her significant other. Wood was a good opener and Dungen went on around 10:30. I left a little after 11:30 because I was getting tired and I'm working today. It's nice they'll be at San Diego Street Scene this weekend, so I'll be able to see them again. curr temp in san diego - 77 degrees. nice.

Seems like there was a trilogy, but I can't think of the third.

I met my best friend when she was 14 and I was 17, so I was rockin the protective-big-brother-but-still-secretly-hot-for-her thing for years. Still, I wasn't a 30 year old rock star at the time.

"Little 15" was always creepy, even then.

I'm late to the Depeche Mode conversation, but I just wanted to say that, for only having heard Violator, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. I eneded up buying a suite ticket for a decent price (cheaper than lower levels would have been), and they put on a great show. I loved the parts where Martin sang solo, and the 1-2 punch of Personal Jesus and Waiting for the Night (my favorite song of theirs) was fantastic. I also enjoyed the slow burn of the opener and the song played right before Enjoy the Silence. That fucking rocked.

Sorry I missed the meet up before hand, I was trying to save my money and knew I would end up spending if I went to dinner beforehand.

Got back from San Diego Street yesterday afternoon. I had a lot of fun hanging out with Lilia and Tommy. Got to see a lot of good bands Friday and Saturday. On Friday I saw Trombone Shorty & Orleans ave., Dungen, for a second time, just having seen them earlier on Monday at the Rhythm Room. They put on a good show both times. Crazy Swedes. Band of Horses, there set was on the main stage as the sun was setting. A very nice atmosphere for the show. I enjoyed their set at Coachella and their set here was another highlight this year.

Deerhunter came next and was great on side stage. Followed Lilia and Tommy to a good spot at the front of the stage, Matt and Kim played the old Outkast hit, B.O.B. after their set, so as we moved to the front everyone was dancing away to Outkast. Great moment. DH, I had only seen them last year at Modified and was impressed. Now I enjoy them even more from seeing them at a festival. The crowd really liked them and the band sounded tight. Got to end the night with Modest Mouse who I'd never seen live, but got rocked by their double drummers and their mighty closer, The Whale Song. Track 4, Do it. Final band of the night was Calexico, it was a great way to end the first night and not have to hear the Black Eyed Peas mess coming from the main stage. We almost lost Lilia to the B.E.P. because of their intoxicating green lasers. Almost...

Saturday was even better, we got Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears in the afternoon. Then another great set by my favorite Welsh band, Los Campesinos!, on the side stage. They all had white t shirts with a photo of the redhead singer/keyboardist on it (I think?, the redhead was the only one not wearing the white shirt. Maybe it was her bday or a joke, or something Welsh?) Anyways, they put on a fun performance with the lead singer starting the set in the middle of the crowd.

Next was a crazy set by, Of Montreal, on the main stage. I hadn't seem live yet but have read and seen clips of their crazy show. They put a lot of work into little set dance performance pieces that go on throughout the set. The music was great and reminded me of some of David Bowie's earlier work.

While I hung out by the soundboard to give my legs a rest and get a bigger view of the show I noticed that the drummer wasn't happy with the sound and as they were starting their set and he went to talk another band member and then had to walk off and talk to a sound guy who then ran down the center alley to the soundboard guy I was standing near. The guy at the soundboard had to go all the way to the front to get everything right and finally came running back to be at the board for the rest of the set.

Instead of going over to see the Silversun Pickups on the other main stage I stayed with Lilia and Tommy who got a good spot for The Dead Weather who we waited for next. We got nice spots on the inside rail near the front and a perfect view for the whole show. There were a lot of good bands both days but my favorite was definitely, The Dead Weather. The sound was perfect and the whole band is really locked into each other. A special honor goes to the lead singer, Alison, (also, love the Kills) who really has a great voice and puts on an incredible performance. Jack White's drumming is really good and he even came out front and played guitar on the final song. After Dead Weather, the night was almost done and we caught some Bassnectar and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings to end the fest.

That drummer was gonna kill someone. It was funny because Lilia and I were talking earlier that day about artists melting down on stage. We had just read a story about Wavves and their meltdown at some Euro fest. I told her I had never seen an artist or band have a complete meltdown before. Sure enough, maybe the next band we saw was Of Montreal, the drummer looks like he's going to hit one of the techs. In his defense, it did kinda sound like shit at the beginning. I couldn't hear Kevin Barnes very well.

Yup. It's offical. We live in the most Racist/Un-American state in the Union:

A Phoenix-area pastor has started to draw protesters to his congregation after he delivered a sermon titled, "Why I Hate Barack Obama," and told his parishioners that he prays for President Obama's death.

Pastor Steven Anderson stood by his sermon in an interview with MyFOXPhoenix, which reports that the pastor continues to encourage his parishioners to join him in praying for the president's death.

"I hope that God strikes Barack Obama with brain cancer so he can die like Ted Kennedy and I hope it happens today," he told MyFOXPhoenix on Sunday. He called his message "spiritual warfare" and said he does not condone killing.

But a small crowd of protesters gathered around his church Sunday, calling Anderson's words "incomprehensible." And MyFOXPhoenix reported that the sermon, which has drawn widespread attention, led to death threats against the pastor.

Anderson's inflammatory message stems in part from Obama's abortion-rights stance.

In Anderson's controversial sermon, delivered at his Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe before Obama arrived for a speech in Phoenix earlier in the month, the pastor said he wants the president to "melt like a snail" with salt on it.

"I'm gonna pray that he dies and goes to hell when I go to bed tonight. That's what I'm gonna pray," he told his congregation.

The last time fierce opposition to Obama's abortion position drew widespread attention was when Obama delivered the commencement address at the University of Notre Dame.

The Anderson sermon also drew concern after it was reported that one man carrying an assault rifle outside the Phoenix arena where Obama spoke was a member of Anderson's church.

Tempe pastor says border agents stopped, beat him

The Arizona Republic .

What started as a business trip to San Diego has turned Tempe resident Steven Anderson into online crusader as his emotional video detailing his detention and abuse at the hands of Border Patrol agents
and state Department of Public Safety officers has made its way around the Internet.

Anderson has a history of run-ins with authorities, several of which he has chronicled on youtube.

In the most recent video, both agencies say they are conducting internal investigations into an incident that took place Tuesday night at a checkpoint on Interstate 8 about 70 miles east of Yuma.
According to Anderson's video, which has been viewed more than 100,000 times since it was posted on youtube.com on Wednesday, the trouble started when he refused to consent to Border Patrol agents searching his car.

“I have the right to travel in this country without being stopped and searched and grilled and interrogated,” Anderson said. The 27-year-old is a pastor at Faithful Word Baptist Church.

Laura Boston, a Border Patrol agent from the Yuma sector, said a K-9 unit alerted officers that drugs or people could be concealed inside Anderson's car, giving the federal officers probable cause to search the vehicle. Anderson refused to move his car or roll down his windows, Boston said.

Anderson, skeptical that the dog detected anything, refused the search, setting of a 90-minute standoff that wasn't resolved until agents broke out the windows of Anderson's car and took him to the ground forcefully.

Anderson said he required 11 stitches to his face, and that he was shocked repeatedly with a Taser while he was lying prone on the ground.

Boston said Border Patrol agents called in DPS officers after Anderson was blocking a lane of traffic, and that DPS officers were carrying the Tasers.

Bart Graves, a DPS spokesman, said the department is conducting an internal investigation but that preliminary reports indicated the officers followed proper procedure.

Anderson said it was Border Patrol agents who were angry with him for refusing to consent to the search, and they used the most force after he was taken from his car.

“Why the violence? Why the excessive brutal force? I think it was just to punish me because I didn't like the things I said to them,” Anderson said. “I told them, ‘no.' I stood my ground. So they decided to punish me by brutalizing me.”

Anderson said his attorney entered a not-guilty plea at a court proceeding on Friday where he was arraigned on two misdemeanor counts of resisting a lawful order.

DPS also cited a 1976 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld the constitutionality of checkpoints near border areas, and that the stop on Interstate 8 is in compliance with the law.

Anderson said the issue was now the force with which Border Patrol agents and DPS officers enforced that law.

“What I did not comply with was being interrogated or searched. Does that 1976 Supreme Court case give them the right to beat the hell out of somebody?” Anderson asked. “What they did to me was totally unnecessary. They're not even claiming I fought back.”

Anderson said he plans on meeting with attorneys Monday to explore his legal options.

In the past several months, Anderson has posted several youtube videos in which he confronts authorities.

In February, he posted a video showing an encounter he claims was at a checkpoint at the New Mexico border. He keeps his windows rolled up. He questions the agents why he's being stopped.

In March, he shot a video entitled “Another Cop Harrasses me for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON *Minnesota” (sic).

In January, he posted another video shot at Sky Harbor International Airport. He walks up to a Phoenix police officer and ask him about his machine gun. When the officer replies that it's none of my business, Anderson says, “It's none of my business? Don't you work for me since I'm a citizen of Phoenix and of the United States? … How would you feel is somebody walked up to your car with a machine gun? Huh? You don't want to answer me?”

What a fucking prick. If this - “I have the right to travel in this country without being stopped and searched and grilled and interrogated,” - is his sentiment, I wonder if he's ever used his pulpit to denounce Joe Arpaio and his sheriff's department for racially profiling and pulling over American citizens who are of Hispanic descent.

Jen, what are my options if I can't use a one way ticket I purchased that was a non refundable ticket?

Depends on the airline. What they'll do is charge you a change fee to change the unused flight to a future one. Plus the difference of the flight cost if there is one. Check the airline's website and be sure to save your confirmation number; since the ticket is paid for, the number is ticketed to you and cannot be changed or transferred.

Arizona surfers will catch a wave at Big Surf in Tempe possibly for the last time on Labor Day.

The 40-year-old water park, with its surfable man-made waves, will close at the end of the day Monday. Its future is unclear.

Golfland Entertainment Inc., which has operated the park since 1991, is giving up its lease on the Tempe facility to concentrate on newer parks in Mesa and California. Big Surf employs about 100 people in season.
El Paso-based Inland Oceans Inc., which owns the property at 1500 N. McClintock Drive, couldn't be reached for comment for its plans for the 12.5-acre site.

Sheri Wakefield-Saenz, Tempe economic development director, said the property likely would attract considerable interest form developers.

Big Surf's 2.5-million-gallon wave pool is one of the largest in the world and highly acclaimed. Wakefield-Saenz said its closure would hurt Tempe's draw as an entertainment destination.

Big Surf brought Southern California surf culture to the Valley in 1969 as the Beach Boys were popularizing surfing life with songs such as "Surfer Girl" and "Catch a Wave."

In the 1970s, performers such Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart and Chicago performed at Big Surf.

The water park's innovative wave machine, developed in a Phoenix pool hall by entrepreneur Phil Dexter, produced five- to six-foot waves that could be ridden with a conventional surfboard.

Many are surfers riding waves around the world learned to surf at Big Surf . A Web site, "Big Surf Veterans," keeps track of them.

Dexter sold the idea to hair care company Clairol, which later sold Big Surf in 1971 to Inland Oceans.

Owners quickly realized that there were not enough surfers in Arizona to support the park and cut down the waves to accommodate swimmers and body surfers.

Last year Mesa-based Golfland also gave up its lease on Waterworld Safari, a north Phoenix water park. That park has been taken over by Australia's Village Roadshow Ltd. and is operated as Wet 'n' Wild Phoenix.

Trevor Wilson, a spokesman for Village Roadshow, said the company is focusing on Wet 'n' Wild and is not looking for an additional Phoenix-area property.

- how (the fuck) do you get rid of a specific scorpion that you have found in your house or apartment?; or,

- how (the fuck) do you make it so you stop getting scorpions in your house?; or,

these appear to be very tiny, goldfish coloured scorpions. i don't even know if they could pierce my skin, but it concerns me that they keep coming back. recently my house was sprayed for bugs, which has helped with the bugs, but now i see scorpions which is odd. they are only in my bathroom and i've tried pouring bleach down all the drains, but it doesn't seem to help. i don't really have any holes in my walls, but i do have some peeling linoleum.

weird. i have never seen scorpions like that. we usually get the bark scorpions which are a couple of inches long. It's also odd you are seeing more than one and that they keep coming back to the same place.

the most likely point of entrance seems to me would be where the plumbing goes through the wall. like on your shower, there is some sort of collar there so you don't see the actual hole, but there is actually a hole there and scorpions have no problem squeezing under a collar. likewise under your sink.

have you called your bug guy and asked him what he thinks?

You're screwed. Scorpions are almost immune to spray so you can't use that. The only way you can kind of get rid of them is to get your place sealed, and that would cost a minimum $1,000 (call an exterminator to find out the exact price, they will charge you by square footage). Also get a cat, they eat scorpions and are immune to their venom, preferrably a feral (?) cat.

We live at 48th St and Elliot and see scorpions all the time. At least 10-12 inside our house last summer. It doesn't help that we live right off S Mountain and have a desert wash that goes right behind our house. My wife was putting on pants for work last summer and felt something poking her knee. She took the pants off in the bathroom and saw a scorpion run away. Called poison control and they said to put a cold compress on her knee and ride it out. She went back to the bathroom to kill the scorp and it was gone. Her knee was in pain for about 24hrs, only really hurt when something touched it.

A week later at 2am I'm broken out of a deep sleep by something stinging my left butt cheek. I sream "OWWW" and jump out of bed. My wife thinks I'm messing with her, but we rip off all the sheets and find the scorpion under the bed. We trap it, take it outside and kill it. My toes and fingers got numb, as well as my lips and the tip of my tounge for a little bit. That f-er got me good. I couldn't sit properly for about 24hrs.

Enjoy.

Ivy, for some reason, I recall you mentioning you have a balcony, which means you're up a floor or two, right? Hmmm, Those are some serious scorpions you have to match your desert! And I think the little ones are more venomous, not sure. I know when I lived at the polo club, I stepped out of the shower once and heard a crunch like sound under the bathmat. When I lifted it up there was a blackish scorpion about 3-4 inches long that I had flattened! I'm certain the horses stabled there thought the human running out her front door in only a bathtowel had lost their mind! LOL(My landlord later pointed out to me that I was surrounded by hay and tackrooms full of horsey stuff and darkeness, so I accepted that, followed by raising my bed on lifters about 6 inches higher. Are you sure these are scorpions if they're orange?

It seems like there are a ton of houses near us that people keep moving out of. Seriously, we've had like 5 different neighbors in the houses on either side of us this year. That's good to know about Chandler...I had a GF that lived there and it always seemed nice, but that was 15 years ago, thought maybe it had turned nasty since it's so cheap. I'm not even sure I know where Surprise is, though I do know a few people who live there, just haven't been to their houses. If she got a job out west, I guess we'd look at Avondale. We (well, she... I work out of the house) can put up with somewhat of a shitty commute for a few years if the price is right and the neighborhood is relatively safe. Aside from some family issues, our primary reason for going is economic. I could grow my business more there, she can get the same quality of job and pay she would get in Portland, but we can snap up a cheap house, put some money away for a few years, and hopefully turn a small profit down the line. Then we will be in much better shape to make a big move. Right now, we're going to make money selling our house up here, but we're so massively in personal and business debt, that we need to use most/all of the profits to pay stuff off.

HEY! Pendulum is on Palladia right now...

EDIT- Bah...one song, then they are on to Razorlight. What is it about Razorlight that they are on every single one of these UK festival shows? They seem the very definition of Meh.

I'm not worried about that. It's just going to be semi-temporary. If I can buy a house cheap that's in good shape in a neighborhood where hearing gunshots is relatively rare, and yet still make it to someplace fun in 30 minutes or so, I'll be happy.

Well, we've been planning to move since my wife got laid off last summer, just not to Phoenix. My business has gone downhill since the local TV station went off the air (I don't know why...most of my clients didn't advertise there anyway, just cable. But it's like it killed the whole market.) She got a job with one of the best employers in town and still had to take a 40% paycut. We just can't afford to stay in Flagstaff. And if we sell the house, (which might be about to happen), we can pay off a ton of other debt. The plan was to move to Oregon, but that's a big financial gamble. I can ramp my business up faster in Phoenix because I already have contacts there, and I can still come up to Flagstaff for my best clients. She used to manage a call center, of which there are tons in Phoenix (though there are quite a few in Portland too). And if we can get cheap housing for a few years, save a bunch of money and then make a profit, we can pretty move wherever we want. We have personal family reasons for staying in the state, too.

I'll try to stop by Mad I.

What is it you do exactly? Like, write/direct/shoot/edit? I enjoyed working with the guy who did the re-edit of Somewhat Damaged earlier this year. Last I spoke with him, he was finding it difficult to get much work here. Don't know if you're a one-man operation or if you could use the assistance.
Also, if you ever need any production help, make note in here and I'd be glad to help if I'm available. In addition to writing and directing, I've served as UPM, AD, and script supervisor on numerous projects. I had a knack for keeping shoots on schedule.

Ha, the whole Phoenix metro area is mehville.

Good neighborhoods to check out:
Arcadia
Biltmore
Anywhere from 7th St to 7th Ave, from Northern south to Camelback
Ahwatukee (my hood but it's just Chandler with a mountain)

My friend just bought a 3 bed/2 bath house near 20th St and Camelback for $190,000, the home was forclosed and appraised at $400,000.

I have another friend who just bought a 2 bed/2 bath house near 16th St and Thomas for @$90,000. The neighborhood is 50/50, a lot of nice homes but some bad ones intermittent. It's a minor fixer-upper but has a huge yard, way bigger than my buddy's at 20th St and Camelback.

I also know someone buying a 2 bed/2 bath home near 12th St and Osborn for @ $80,000. Definitely a fixer-upper but lots of potential.

That's insane. The foreclosures here are like $150,000 and up.

westcoastpirate

They're older brick homes as well. The crazy thing is my friend who bought the 2 bed/2 bath house for @$90K got it right at the end of '08, and qualified for the 1st time homebuyer tax credit and got an additional $10K on his tax return. At first the credit was going to be a loan you eventually would have to repay, but the rules were changed and he doesn't have to pay it back. Obama!

Keep in mind these are fixer-uppers, but pretty nice fixer-uppers IMO. The neighborhood isn't the best but a lot of kids are moving there to be close to downtown.

If you want to really get down and dirty my other friend is a real-estate agent and is always sending me information about extremely low-priced homes to buy as investment properties. I mean like $30K for a 2 bed/2 bath. But they're in really bad neighborhoods...I mean you don't go down there after dark, and maybe speed through during the daytime without giving a 2nd look.

Ween was great. Started off with a song from White Pepper and went from there. The encore included a 20 minute drum solo by Claude. I think in total they played for about 2 hours 45 minutes. Saw a guy up front dressed in a banana suit. Really good crowd for the show, it seemed like a lot more people than their show in Tucson a couple years ago. But Pine Mountain Ampitheater is a lot bigger than the Rialto.

Saw Claude at the Monte V after, and we did Jager shots for his birthday. He's pretty cool.

EDIT: Gene Ween is starting to resemble Frank Black, he's gotten a lot bigger and had buzzed hair. Dean Ween looks the same and was tearing it up on guitar.

Last year, I parked at some little place across the street and walked. I want to say it was a golf course or something, but that seems weird for that neighborhood. I think they were charging $5.

I've never had a problem parking at the actual fair though, except for the $10.

I don't understand why people hate going there. Just go in the entrance right by the colliseum, and you barely have to set foot in the actual fair. It's a $10 concert ticket, how can you beat that?

And though Bejarano’s hard-charged, punk-singing stylings of the past aren’t present in this group, the wow factor is still there, especially during live gigs, which reminds us, in terms of energy, tone, and color, of Odelay-era Beck hanging out with PJ Harvey. The high-octane soundscapes – brought out by bassist Lindsay Cates, guitarist Nick Hadik, and percussionist John De La Cruz – allow Bejarano’s dreamy narratives to really resonate in that internal place that feels good.

On Saturday, September 12, Snow Songs performs at Icehouse Tavern, on a bill that includes Cage Match, Said Gun, and Halema'uma'u. Since you’ll be ditching the couch that night and hitting up the hockey-rink bar, you can possibly expect something else besides awesome live music. Once during a Snow Songs’ show, as Bejarano explains, “A kangaroo bounced into The Lost Leaf and beat up [drummer John] De La Cruz. Then turned around and kissed Nick [Hadik, the guitarist].”

Doubt that would ever happen in front of the home stereo.

I like that Yolanda chick. Snow Songs opened for Rob Dickinson once. And I've seen a couple of her other bands waaaaay back in the 90's.
