I have an interview tomorrow for a customer relations position or a sales position. Apparently both are open. It's with American Income Life Insurance Co. on Central and Indian School.

I always flake out on these because I don't trust they are legit jobs. We'll see what happens.

I'm most likely down for the waterpark, got to try and see Ivy and Randy every time they venture up to Southern Flagstaff, because last night was the last time I'll be going to Northern Tucson for a while :D

Is it really $32 to go to a fucking water park? What the hell do they let you do there?

and $5 parking... :nono

i didn't understand the need for a parking fee if you are paying to get in...

the park is quite fun, though. you just have to get there early or stay late, as the lines are quite long during the peak hours of the day. it can take upwards of 30 mins in line to get to the top of a ride.

the jetted water slides were the funnest thing i've ridden in a long time, though. slide down, get jetted back up, back down, back up...the ride lasts a couple mins. pretty cool.

$5 parking?! what!? nonsense.

(and i'm finding out if my girl wants to do bikini, she was married there, so hopefully there are no objections lol)

Jason, enough. Tell Ivy you will go to the water park with her and Randy on Saturday 08/15/09. Just make sure to e-mail Randy first to see if you are an acceptable companion to hang out with him. I already know I fail since I would clog up all the tubes and slides with my fat body so i'll have to see him some other time. :)

Fax, if you absolutely promise to get stuck in a water tube and cause a Mt. Splashmore-esque pileup of little kids arms stuck in your blubber, well...

I can't imagine anyone I'd rather join us.

Anyone else thinking about going to either the Phx Sonic Youth show or the Tucson Sonic Youth show? I'm planning on going to the Tucson show because its on a Friday night and the Rialto is a much better venue than the Marquee. Discuss...

I am planning on at least one of those shows. I am considering light railing it up for the Phoenix show, though I need to look into transit times.

I have, *cough* *cough*, never see an show at the Rialto. So maybe this'd be a good a time as any?

I guess it depends on how that weekend and such shake out and what tickets I have money for and such.

I am heading down for Los Campesinos! in three weeks for almost certain. Def wanna see them again!

Rick's film was really good. A story of a writer with depression and alcohol abuse issues who falls quick and hard for a used clothes store clerk who has issues with commitment. The acting really stood out as well compared to the other the films shown.

Thanks Amy, Ivy, John, & Mark (in alphabetical order) for your support in coming out last night, and to the rest of you well-wishers, via text message or otherwise. (And Dylan, no, it wasn't a biography, though it was autobiographical. :p) Here's hoping there's more work to be seen from me in the future.

So would it be in bad form to discuss the merits (or lack thereof) of the other films? I felt like The Hierophant got the evening started off on a weak note, but the one that was essentially a trailer for a movie rather than an actual movie has got to take Worst in Show honors. Glad I didn't try to make small talk with people I didn't know afterward lest I came into contact with someone involved in that and had to try to say something nice about it. Don't know that I would've been able to.

I want to add that I felt bad for and frightened of the main guy in the movie which is a good thing because I like being able to contemplate a movie after I've seen it. I thought the acting was really good during the last part of the movie, but I couldn't understand what they were saying in that first segment -- whether it was the actors speaking too quickly and mumbling, or if the sound was too low, I'm not sure. Also, I liked the choice of actors -- the girl seemed pretty enough and distant enough to cause the obsessive reaction from the guy, and the guy seemed really intelligent and charming but a little creepy at the sanme time. The story and feeling from the movie stayed in my thoughts through the next day though, which I think is a good sign. I liked it.

Please finish your current scripts and get another movie made, Rick. I really want to see more.

Just got done watching Weeds season 1 and 2 this weekend. Now I have to go rent season 3 because season 2 ended with a cliffhanger. The show is okay but sometimes the storyline gets kinda weak and the whole thing of her getting involved with the dea agent and what happened to him at the end of season 2 seemed pretty far fetched. My friend told me season 3 is better so we shall see.

Micah, I tried watching Weeds and made it through only about 4 episodes of Season 1 before I lost interest. I wanted to like it...I mean..it's about some suburban mom who sells weed to keep a roof over . It's not a completely original idea but it should be interesting enough. I'm not sure why it doesn't come together for me but some people absolutely love this show.

Rick, are you alive, how'd it go?

It went well enough. The event was kind of disappointing in that I had grander expectations of the theater in which it'd be held. The organizer of the event told me that they're using the "big" theater, and apparently my concept of big is considerably different than hers. Not to complain, but it was fairly minor league.
The concern of mine I had when I first got in -- that mine was only impressive to them because the rest of the entries were pretty much worthless -- was in no way disputed. There was an animation piece at the beginning that looked cool and would be great for background videos at a rave, but as for what it meant, don't ask me. There was a horror piece called The Hierophant that was abysmal, a really bad wannabe CSI/Seven clone, which had the same basic creative crew as this would-be comedic piece at the end, the title of which I've forgotten. They're apparently big shots in the local film community, or at least that was the sort of impression I got, and if that was representative of their work, I have no desire to have anything to do with them. But the absolute worst was the one that I talked about in my last post, this purported film about 3 guys whose lives change or some shit one night and there's a cab driving angel who drives all three of them around. There's even a laughably bad suicide attempt via wrist cutting. Ugh, that was just so fucking beyond horrible.
And so despite all of that, and despite whispering to Jen after that really horrible piece that I felt a lot less anxious about what the reaction would be to my film, I still got really anxious and my palms got clammy when my movie started. Reflecting on it now, I'll eschew humility and say that the cinematography was easily the best among the films shown, my shot selection was much more varied and strong, and all in all, my shit just looked way more professional. So why was I still so anxious when we had to go up for the Q&A, which didn't end up being much of a Q&A at the end of it? I dunno.
The other disappointment about the event was that because I disliked so many of the other projects, it didn't realize its potential for networking as I had hoped. I don't feel like I'd benefit from working with anybody there, which sounds arrogant but is a basic fact. I've slummed it before and come to regret the waste of my time, so I'm through with the niceties.
Oh, and before you go thinking my head's just super massive right now, it's not like I think my film's the shit. I like it okay in comparison to what else was on display but I still can't help seeing all of the mistakes I made. That's probably the last time it'll be screened in public. I won't spend any more money submitting it to festivals, so unless it gets into the NewFilmmakers festival in New York I sent it to a couple months back, that'll be it for Somewhat Damaged. It's been done for 2 years and appeared in a couple of local screenings (down in Tucson and here), and now's the time to move on and focus solely on new material.

Please finish your current scripts and get another movie made, Rick. I really want to see more.

Thanks so much, Amy. It's funny vindication for you to say that Eleanor was "pretty enough" to cause the obsessive reaction from Jeremy; that's one of the arguments I've had with Jennifer and mob roulette about the merits of the film. (Without going on about it for too long, I agree that she's attractive enough to make Jeremy's reaction believeable, while their argument is that he's by far the better "catch" and so that he'd get so broken up over her is hard to buy into.)
The sound quality was rather poor on the mountain and needed touching up in post-production for a few other scenes. Our sound guy provided all his equipment for free and he had a lot of experience so I was lazy and took him at his word about everything sounding good. Won't make that mistake again.

I'm putting my own script writing off for the time being since I'm kind of stuck but I'm working with a couple other writers (including mob) to have something I can direct. Will blab about it as it comes to fruition. :)

Thanks for the breakdown, feels like I was there. I appreciate the insight of things you look for while viewing films. Most if not all were things I'd never imagine even considering, until now. Disappointing to hear that the scene is lacking although it was expected, it is Phoenix afterall.

Don't worry, I've always thought you had a big head. Do they even make fitted hats your size?

Lastly, I hope zzz's busted out her glowsticks and danced her little heart out druing this...

EARTHQUAKE HUH?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090803/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_mexico_quake

MEXICO CITY – A powerful earthquake Monday shook fishing villages along Mexico's Gulf of California, prompting alarm as far away as Phoenix, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The U.S. National Earthquake Information Center said the 6.9-magnitude quake struck at 12:59 p.m. (1:59 EDT, 17:59 GMT) and was centered 76 miles (122 kilometers) north-northeast of Santa Isabel in Baja California and 331 miles (533 kilometers) southeast of the border city of Tijuana.

It was the strongest of four quakes of 5.0-magnitude or greater that struck the area over a 45-minute period late Monday morning.

Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Alex Rangel said a high-rise near downtown shook violently enough that workers evacuated but there were no reports of injuries or damage. The quake was located about 460 miles from downtown Phoenix.

How did it shake violently but not cause injury or damage? Wouldn't that just be regular shaking? I call bullshit all around on this one. If a building was violently shaking almost 5 hours away how come this shit don't happen when So. Cal gets quakes?

M Sparks
08-03-2009, 02:30 PM
Different fault lines/plates? South instead of west? I'm no geologist, but it doesn't seem that ridiculous. And how often does So Cal get a 6.9? The Northridge quake in the early 90's was a 6.7.

Also, I guarantee the "journalist" added the word "violently". Fire Department spokespeople are always low key about everything- it's their job. Once, there was a tanker spill on I-40...the road was icy and there was a thin layer of fuel on top. The cops were running around telling everyone not to move as if the whole place was about to explode. But when I interviewed the FD spokesman, he was cracking jokes.

I started hating her in Season 3, and we stopped watching it after that. She becomes a horrible mother and person.

totally agree. i watch, but i couldn't give a flying fuck what happens.

i liked rick's movie. i agree with amy that it was quiet at the beginning. also, it seemed a bit "dated". i noticed it was a bit older than the others, but with it being filmed at a thrift store, in tucson & the actors used (their styles), even the story, it all just looked a bit 90s to me. not that that's a bad thing, just something i noticed. i can see why you would want to edit it too, though once we got through the set-up it moved pretty quickly and everything tied together nicely.

the other films were mostly crap. i liked the nowhere man (reminded me of the twilight zone) and the killer vacuum movie was of course funny, but none of them really had a compelling story like yours.

i didn't understand the cartoons at all. they looked fanatastic, i just don't get why there were like 3 shorts entitled "trailer" and why they had to use such uncomfortable fucking music; that music belongs in that scynecdote movie, lol. the tarot card (hyrophant or however it's spelled) was just horrible, along with the caco story (or the story with the guy who looked like caco) and pretty much everything the hideous blonde made. who the fuck is she blowing? did she make a bunch of porn and is now using her profits to try to make a "real" movie?! i don't understand what criteria was used to select these films, but it seemed like it was more about friends showcasing their shit to one-another than an actual film fest. i mean, the plastic blonde chick had like 3 movies, and only the vacuum one was entertaining (and that was due to my just finding anything anthropromorphic funny). i almost wanted to say something during the Q&A, but it would have been pointless as obviously these people are "big wigs" in this circle like rick said. shocking and sad that these people are being considered for a festival.

the room was much nicer than when i went to see a movie there previously, rick. and i loved the $2 beer!!!!!!! holla!!!!!!!! i'm just glad mob found me when i came in so i wasn't sitting there alone snickering to myself. at some points it was seriously hard for me to contain my laughter (shower suicide). i had fun at bikini, sorry amy couldn't make it and that rick & jen had to leave. twas nice hanging with john & mob, though john, i'm sorry for thinking you were jacob :p

Thank you. Huh, guess the influence of the decade when I came of age is more prevalent than I figured. What do you mean by "the actors used (their styles)"? Meaning their clothes?

the other films were mostly crap. i liked the nowhere man (reminded me of the twilight zone) and the killer vacuum movie was of course funny, but none of them really had a compelling story like yours.

I liked Nowhere Man okay and was sitting next to the writer/director of that during the Q&A. We chatted a bit but didn't exchange numbers, which feels like an opportunity missed, though I got the feeling he's a director first and a writer second, so maybe there wouldn't have been a collaboration to be exploited there anyway. The only problem I had with that piece is that I saw the same thing 7 years ago by one of my friends when I was in college, so it didn't have any emotional resonance for me 'cause it was very much a been there, seen that deal.
Vroom! was good for the last couple minutes but if they think they're going to have something that anybody's gonna want to watch by expanding the sequel to 18 minutes, they're even more retarded than I would have ever guessed. I hope the sequel talk was only a joke.

i almost wanted to say something during the Q&A, but it would have been pointless as obviously these people are "big wigs" in this circle like rick said. shocking and sad that these people are being considered for a festival.

That would've been pretty funny. If they saw you hanging out with me afterward, it could've gotten me blacklisted in this town, which would obviously not be the most damaging blow, but the discomfort that would've created would have been fun to see.

While the dems f up in many ways they are not nearly as bad as the reps, look at the health care debate. the reps cant come up with their own plan so all they do is fearmonger by saying that the current plan will kill old people. Wrong. If you haven't seen The Wire, you can always kick into watching that. I broke my own personal record on season 3 -- 12 episodes in under 3 days. Woo!

Season 5 is in route. Can't wait.

Yeah, you and me both. Season 4 starts today. Man, dude, season 3 hit the ground running and just never stopped. Think episode 11 is my all-time favorite, from the way it began to the way it ended. Omar + Brother Mouzone = The Wire at its best.

Phoenix Public Library branches have free wi-fi, you need a library card to use it. The only branch that didn't have it was the closest branch to me, of course, at 44th St and Chandler Blvd. But I think they may have upgraded that branch recently.

I also know the Community Center in Pecos Park at 17010 S. 48th St. has free wifi, but I don't know what their hours are.

Saw on the Silverplatter website that Peaches will be making her first AZ appearance at the Marquee on 10/27. I can vaguely remember walking by the beginning of Peaches set at Coachella 07 on my way to Jesus and Mary Chain and seeing her straddling the twin bass drums and waving a riding crop. crazy. Will consider Peaches, especially 'cause I know a friend I haven't seen in a long time will probably make the drive up from Tucson. I caught the first half of her set at Coachella '07 before making the decision I should have from the beginning and going to the Jesus and Mary Chain. Haven't really listened to any of her stuff since The Teaches of Peaches, though, so the price better be right.

Yeah, one of my friends was complaining about that yesterday. I hear Bob Dylan is terrible these days anyway.

He has deliberately thrown out any sense of the original melodies to his greatest hits in his live performances. When you hear Like A Rolling Stone, you shouldn't have to guess what song it is. And really, if he is going to alter the music that much, why not just write and perform exclusively new material.

I saw him a few years ago at the TCC Arena. There were many confused faces in the crowd. If you weren't in on the "concept", then it leaves the older fans grasping for a familiar melody. Yet, there is no hint or explanation given from the stage.

It seems like Dylan is doing what he has always done, please himself.

Whenever I start to get down about the summer heat I remember that I could still live in oregon where I got 9 months of gloomy rain a year. Gray skys, continual rain/drizzle/sleet to the point of not even being able to see the road to drive. Or I think I could live in the midwest where I get tornadoes in the warm months and snow in the cold months. I will take my desert any day of the year. The only other place I would consider living is Cali but I can't afford it yet. :)

I love the rain here. You can actually smell it. The smell of fresh rain in the desert is one of my favorite smells in the world. You don't get that smell in Oregon because it is raining continually. It smells more like mildew then anything else. It is a very depressing thing to have it rain every day. The year I moved it had rained for 44 days straight. The valley was under water pretty much. In fact I had to leave my kids at daycare till my mother in law could go get them in a truck because I couldn't get to the town the babysitter lived in. This is why Seattle and Portland have such a high suicide rate due to the continual rain and gloom.

It holds around 1800 people. I've never been patted down by security or anything. I don't think they'll be on the look out for recording devices. Yeah, I'll be at congress most likely after the show. I hear the opening band is pretty good too. Haven't heard them though.

it'll be close to show time by the time we get there, but i definitely wanna meet ya before or after the show. i'll be recording during gogol, so kinda hard to hang out at that point. how big is the rialto? is security pretty lax there?

rialto isnt big at all but the security is stoned all the time and could care less.

I'll be at congress after the show. I'm quite tired of gogol bordello. Sure they are fun and full of energy but its the same 'ol thing every time. but boardies and beers sounds great

John, next time you get a chance can you post that link to the concert calendar again? For some reason I failed to bookmark it and it found it to be very useful.

your friend,
Mark

My minions are well trained.

I'm not a minion, I'm a independent bounty hunter traveling the galaxy, selling my services to the highest bidder. And the dark lord still owes me beers, with interest, it comes to like three 24 packs. Ha! Please deliver to Coachella board house during the end of apr 2010.

Thank you Micah and thank you John for training Micah.

Micah, what hotel did you stay at in LA for your Wiltern show? Details as far as cost and location and happiness at said hotel would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Mark

Just an FYI, there's a Wilshire right across the street that looks pretty nice.

I stayed at the Motel 6 in Hollywood back when I went and saw Elbow in July.
You'll have to check their website to see what the rates are right now. The wiltern is about a 15 min drive from the motel.

Thanks D$, i'll look into it. I have an expedia travel credit i'm going to use probably. I will be going two weekends in a row to the same venue so I figured it's about time I booked something.

So, do I see Bon Iver at Mesa Arts or !!! at Rhythm Room?

Hmm, maybe I should consult the folks in the upcominig shows thread about hotels walking distance to the Wiltern. Something tells me the Wilshire is pricey.

Is there an album I should start with?

D$, I stand corrected that Wilshire isn't super expensive and I have now found 3 hotels close to the venue. Thank you for you assistance friends.

Dunno; I only have the one that they released a couple of years ago, and I only bought it because I stopped by their Coachella set on the way to get a spot for Arcade Fire and could barely tear myself away from it because it was so much fun.

I'll check out some youtube stuff and decide. I really like Bon Iver and he has conflicted with stuff at every fest thus far.
