Yes & I don't know. that place has been around forever and was quite successful and the owner vows to rebuild, so I'm not sure why he would need to burn it down.

What seemed odd to me was that he claimed to know exactly what caused the fire; he went into a speech about how the builders covered his a/c with foam during the remodel and a spark must have caused the fire.

Okay, so I have something for all of you to do next Friday, July 31: go watch my movie! I finally got accepted into a screening event that I could've gotten rejected by. The IFP Phoenix holds a monthly Cinema Lounge and they're hosting a shorts program this month. I got word today that they'd like my film to be among those shown. This is such a relief because I've submitted the damn thing to I don't even know how many festivals/events. I've lost count. So while it's not the most prestigious public showing, it's still one that involves people I don't know liking it enough to want to show it.
It's taking place at the Metro Arts Theatre, at 1700 N. 7th Ave. There's a happy hour at 5:30, but that's mainly for filmmakers and those who want to network. Otherwise the films begin at 7:30, with a Q&A afterward. (Ivy, I may need to see if you can hook me up with some drugs so I can be okay with participating in that.) Tickets are a scant $5, so I don't want to hear any excuses.

Thanks, everybody. Of course, leave it to me to immediately start looking the gift horse in the mouth. I started thinking on my drive in to work this morning that they only accepted my film because they didn't have enough submissions to fill out their program. Or that they only thought mine was worth a damn because the others are so bad. And the anxiety I'm going to be stricken by if my producer isn't able to make it and I'm fielding questions by myself is going to be pretty bad. But in the end, I'm obviously glad to be contending with this sort of anxiety rather than the depression I would've felt if they hadn't chosen to show my film.

I don't think I'll be drinking either tequila or vodka before the screening next week. I've done that once before, for a screening of my first film Affection. I had to get up in front of the audience (we had probably 500+ people there) to introduce my movie and I had started drinking shots 2 hours before the event even started. Phoenix police announced Wednesday the arrest of four boys suspected of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl in a shed next to a vacant apartment unit last week.

The four boys are suspected of luring the girl with chewing gum into the shed, in the 2600 block of North 45th Avenue, before they attacked her, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Andy Hill.

The boys, ages 9 to14, were arrested by Phoenix Maryvale Precinct officers around 5 p.m. Tuesday. The attack occurred Thursday. They are being held at a juvenile detention center on suspicion of sexual assault and kidnapping, police said. The oldest could be tried as an adult.

In a press conference, Hill called the case "one of the worst crimes we have come across in Phoenix in quite some time," given the ages of the victim and the suspects and the circumstances of the alleged attack.

The victim and the boys were neighbors at an apartment in the same area.

The girl was taken into Child Protective Services custody after the attack after her parents disowned her. Hill said the parents blamed her for being victimized and bringing shame to the family.

Hill said the girl and the four boys are each refugees from war-torn Liberia in west Africa which, according to investigators, would complicate authenticating names and dates of birth.

He added that investigators faced challenges with interviews because of language barriers.

Are you kidding me? I mean, are you FUCKING KIDDING ME? I don't give a flying shit what your stupid fucking cultural values are. You don't get to abandon your 8 year old child that's been beaten and raped. I hope they all get the fucking chair. The kids AND the parents.

Whoops.

I think I saw Sonic Youth in 1995 at Lollapalooza, but I wasn't paying close attention. They're one of those bands that I never really got into in the 90's (like Pixies) because I was paying too much attention to the Britpop/shoegazer bands, and now I feel it's really too late to bother. Frontman Frank Black/Black Francis tells Spin that the Pixies will bring their Doolittle tour to North America. He even names the cities on the itinerary: Oakland, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Boston, D.C., New York, "maybe Montreal". They've even got a hometown venue more or less locked down: "I believe we're doing the Wang Center in Boston," says Black. No dates have been confirmed yet.

If we're all reminiscing about Coachella 2004, let me say it was hotter than shit and I made a huge mistake by choosing to start eating mushrooms as soon as we walked into the polo fields. I don't want to grab my booklet to say who exactly we saw but I know my friend and I were waaaay far back during the Pixies. We didn't stay for the whole set because Stereolab was playing in the Gobi and my friend really wanted to see them, so we did. I caught maybe 2 songs of theirs because I had to shit so badly from the heat and the mushrooms and whatever other shit I ate during the day. (Rick Trivia #502: That was the last time I ever shit at Coachella.) When I was waiting in line, there were these douchebags behind me who had just arrived, walking around barefooted, and when I saw the murky water on the floor inside the bathroom trailer I thought, "Serves them right." And we were waaaay far back for Radiohead and started heading to the Sahara before "Creep," but then "Creep" came on so we stopped and listened and sang along. When it was over, we again proceeded to the Sahara and Kraftwerk, barely getting inside the tent. I was so exhausted that I just sat down and had the perfect comedown. I wanted to leave but Matt was like, "No way, dude, we gotta see all of Kraftwerk." And I'm glad he insisted.

True enough but we can still hope. I'm wondering if we will get anyting this year or if everything will start in spring and then they become festival whores. Which i'm ok with. I would love Massive Attack at Coachella and Sasquatch. Then Red Rocks too!

yeah, massive attack will be the shows i travel all over for. i'll have to do a pixies date, but i'm thinking i may try for the eugene, OR sat date. do what i did for mile high and flyin sat, see the show, then fly out sun. no vacay needed...save that for massive attack and others. though i may do a three date run with pixies and take off the two days needed for the seattle shows, then go to eugene, then home. decisions, decisions...

I was on the left in the seats (because everyone else with me didn't want to stand up front, damn them). I can't remember what he was shouting, but it was something like "YOU SUCK!" or "I hate this song!" or "Get off the stage!"

During Teardrop. TEARDROP. It was appalling.

funny, i thought we founded this country to get away from taxes:

http://ivy.aholic.us/gallery/d/794813-1/418237539_1451008174_0.jpeg

granted, those are very nominal taxes for my cell phone, but why on earth do i need federal, state, county and city taxes that are all more than the 911 fee?!?!

To answer your question from a few days ago, Ivy, yes, tickets to the screening this Friday can be purchased at the door. The theater is apparently very big. And the screenings will have a duration of ~1 hour, which actually just made me anxious again because my film alone is about 28 minutes, meaning the other 4-7 films combined will barely be longer than mine. So I don't know if they're going to show mine first or save it for the end. And if it's saved for the end, that's kind of a cool thing (y'know, like I'm headlining the event, hah), but then since the Q&A will go on immediately afterward, if there's a particularly vociferous dislike of my film, I'll have to contend with that right away instead of any other films sort of cushioning the blow. *sigh* Glad I've decided to take that day off work.

I think I'm losing it. I went back to silverplatter.info a few minutes ago and looked at the upcoming show list and there sits Matt and Kim - 8/26 - The Clubhouse. Can someone else go look at this website and confirm or deny this. To make matters worse I also went to the Clubhouse website and they do not have them listed.

I feel like I haven't posted in forever, just wanted to say to everyone. It's much harder to get time off than I realized and the computers we have aren't really conducive to keeping up on the boards. So...

1. Who got NIN tickets?

2. Why does Arizona suddenly get all these great shows when I'm no longer living there?

3. Anything interesting happening in the music world?

1. All of us who tried were successful. Jason/Sin is going to all 4 L.A. shows.

2. It comes and goes. :) I still find myself leaving the state for many shows but I we are doing OK lately.

3. Daft Punk/Tron Soundtrack Theme released. See Daft Punk thread. The Pixies are touring and doing Doolittle shows. I can't stop listening to Dead Weather. :)

Hope all goes well in the Big Apple. Or are you in upstate?

Actually, I'm working at a summer camp in Wisconsin. It's lots of fun, but hard work.

I'll be back in Arizona for about two weeks in August. Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze some shows in during that time.

(Ivy, I may need to see if you can hook me up with some drugs so I can be okay with participating in that.) Tickets are a scant $5, so I don't want to hear any excuses.

so i see "films" begin at 7:30, how long do they think this will take?

faxman75
07-30-2009, 02:56 PM
I think he posted yesterday 6-7 films i'm guessing between 30-50 minutes each? He has no idea when his will be shown and there is a Q&A to follow.

I'm gussing a minimum of 3 hours worth of movies? I'll wait for Rick to post more details later.

chairmenmeow47
07-30-2009, 03:00 PM
thanks fax :)

if this is going to be more than 2 hours, can you at least let us know what time yours goes on and can we just come then? i've had quite the week at work and i'm not sure i could sit through more than 2 hours of short films, though i do want to see yours of course!

Mr. Dylanja
07-30-2009, 03:04 PM
No no no, I think it is close to an hour TOTAL. He said his was around 26 minutes and was as long as the other 4 or 5 films combined.
