No it's a state senator who is telling us the world has survived for 6,000 years so far and we need to bring uranium to Arizona so we can make money and it won't hurt anything. Once the mining is complete all will be well.

sin213
07-08-2009, 10:12 AM
and that once the mining is complete, you'll never even know it was there.

except for all the missing vegitation...and animals...oh and the minerals that were in the earth...oh and disregard the expidited land errosion from the earth being loosened and moved during the mining....oh, and the added pollution from the mining equipment....

yeah, i think it'll be noticable...

faxman75
07-13-2009, 07:31 AM
John, it was about 65-70% full at most. The Heartless Bastards apparently didn't play as a full electric band, it was apparently the chick doing an accoustic show so it was mostly boring to me.

I was 2 people away from a drunk college girl who had aspirations of being the loudest screamer during the quiet parts of each song. She would scream really loud and then laugh at herself and when she caught her breath she would do it again. During other random parts of the performance she talked and took pictures of herself and her friends and was having the time of her life. Fortunately it didn't ruin the show and Jenny rocked and was way impressive doing greatest hits from her "Acid Tongue", "Rabbit Fur Coat" and "Under the Black Light". The whole band was drinking beers and Jenny is quite the performer. I don't see many indie shows where the artist is able to effortlessly keep the crowds attention with brand new unreleased songs and also not have a ton of talkers during the quiet tracks. Well done Jenny.

Long Live the fucking Rialto!

"The Rialto Theatre's Curtis McCrary continues to amaze me with his ability to secure the kinds of quality artists that have resulted in ticket sales far beyond what a third-rate market like Tucson should be able to support," said Douglas Biggers, executive director of the nonprofit Rialto Theatre Foundation.

"The Rialto Theatre has developed a reputation among and agents across the country for its professionalism, its niche market performance, the quality of the sound...and our fabulous audiences," Biggers said.

I am always nervous about buying off of craigslist because I hear that voice in the back of my head that says I am buying someone elses junk, but being as I am poor I can only afford other peoples junk at this point. Thank you for the heads up, I will check it out. :)

Hey, Ivy! Degha and Djentrification run the Sunday nights at the San Carlos and they bring different selectors out every week. You'll hear A LOT more musical diversity than at Adult Swim. The crowd and the vibe are more relaxed, too. It starts out at the pool but ends up in the posh downstairs bar where they have Kiltlifter on tap for like 3 or 4 bucks and occasionally hook it up with free appetizers for everyone there. I just spoke to D last night...

So the Rialto is looking for donations and has membership plans. The lowest level plan may very well be worth it if you go to shows there a few times a year. I'm not sure how often artists who sell out quickly come but this is what you get:

Price: $60.00

-24-hour Members Only presale for every event*

-Special Members Appreciation concert

*some restrictions apply.

The Rialto thing is an annual thing. Or at least they are offering it this year. It's easily the best club in the state. I can't think of many shows where the presale would really benefit me though. I know I had a link for a presale for Beck a couple years ago and that was helpful because he sold that place out quick but other than that I have pretty much only seen Calexico play there a handful of times over the past 8 months. Wilco should have :nono They always get good shows though. I know Animal Collective and My Mornging Jacket played there this year. The coming months are the first time the schedule hasn't made me totally drool but there is still good stuff.

I almost always choose a show at the Rialto over one in Phoenix at a shitty venue though most of the time it's Marquee Theater size bands and I don't mind that place so much.

Upcoming shows at the Rialto in Tucson:

7.15 - Ottmar Liebert
7.26 - Snoop Dogg with Stephen Marley
7.27 - Thrash & Burn featuring DevilDriver
7.28 - De La Soul
7.30 - The Showdown
8.1 - Glasvegas
8.2 - Underground Hustlemania
8.5 - Reel Big Fish & English Beat
8.8 - Sinbad
8.17 - Los Lonely Boys
8.18 - Steve Earle with Allison Moorer
8.19 - Hatebreed
8.22 - Ryanhood
8.25 - George Clinton
8.29 - Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers
9.1 - Jim Rose Circus vs. Jake "The Snake" Roberts
9.2 - Johnny Winter
9.8 - Paolo Nutini
9.15 - Umphrey's McGee - ON SALE SATURDAY
9.16 - Michael Franti & Spearhead - ON SALE FRIDAY
9.17 - Mason Jennings - ON SALE FRIDAY
9.18 - Andrew Nickatina
9.22 - Sugar Ray

I went to high school with Ryanhood. Cameron Hood sat in front of me in Physics senior year. We got along well. Too bad his band is lame.

Every time I want to give a thought to trying to get into Tool, someone reminds me that their fan club is called "toolarmy" and I decide against listening to them for another few months.

Caught The Hurt Locker last night with Micah, and it was probably the best film I've seen so far this year. Well, maybe not better than Up, but damn close. The direction is really taut and suspenseful, the script is pretty superb, and the cinematography and production design make Iraq feel like an alien landscape. There's one particularly striking scene where the image and music combine to make you feel like you're in Hell. Check it out. (Ivy, this is a recommendation that you would probably appreciate more than Synecdoche, NY.)

Synedoche NY was good I thought. It got dark and twisted at the end and at some point I really lost whether it was reality or his play. I wouldn't say it was a great movie but definitely interesting.

I started watching Hurt Locker because like mose movies I watch I get distracted at home or I put them on and fall asleep. The first 20-30 minutes I saw were intense. I'm also in the middle of watching Bruno. I guess I can make it a goal to finish these movies this weekend especially since I am off tomorrow.

The word cool and longboards do not go together.

I prefer a small board for it's portability.

you do know what a bannana board is right?
the only thing that makes a longboard a longboard
is the truck length
the actualy size of a longboard doesnt actually dictate if it is one or not

Back to guns....

The numbers game. The 40 states allow this thing is kind of a trick on words. Apparently only 15 states do.

Numbers worth exploring

Based on extensive legal research conducted by Nashville attorney David Randolph Smith of the local firm Smith and Schmidt, the actual figure is nearly the inverse.

There ARE 37 states according to Smith that have laws mandating the issuance of concealed weapons permits. But of those 37 states, 27 explicitly prohibit guns in places where alcohol is served.

In fact, there are only 15 states in the country which have circumstances remotely similar to the one Tennessee will be in on July 14 when the law goes into effect. Those states issue concealed weapons permits, but do not explicitly ban guns in places serving alcohol. They also preempt local governments from regulating firearms.

In effect, a person with a handgun in a bar in any of those 15 states is not committing a criminal act. But Tennessee’s new law goes one step further than that. It is the first state in the entire country to expressly allow handguns in places that serve alcohol.

Smith believes Tennessee committed “legislative malpractice” when its General Assembly voted to override Gov. Phil Bredesen’s veto of the guns-in-bars bill, and he intends to do something about. He’s leading a coalition that’s formulating a potential legal challenge to guns-in-bars.

“In effect, Tennessee by this new law has legislated a public nuisance and created an explicit right to bring handguns into bars,” Smith said. “This is unprecedented in U.S. law and runs afoul of the law and policy in the vast majority of states that do not permit concealed weapons in bars, or otherwise restrict, or prohibit loaded and concealed weapons in public places.”

I wonder if AZ's law is the same as TN. That requires more research. I hate the news. They all go for slants and headlines and the people have to do all the work themselves.

I always thought they called banana boards banana boards, not longboards.

So what would this be called, because technically it has the world's widest trucks:

Edit: I'll be back and forth between PHX and Tucson. So anyone in Tucson (Forza, Dale) let me know if anything's going on as well please!

this made me lol seriously
i applaud you for finding the world's largest skateboard
lemme clarify, if the trucks stick out past the deck
then it's a longboard since the truck design makes it nigh impossible to do traditional skate tricks
though a few have tried to do traditional tricks with longboards

I do like banana boards, just not into the longboards that go up to my shoulder. Most of the time you see guys wearing Abercrombie polos and flip flops riding those behemoths.

I'll be there this weekend. Take the light rail!

i would if i still lived on the path of the light rail. i will be there though, prolly not till 8:30 :)

Anyone interested in a Tool meetup downtown? Maybe at the Hard Rock around 6:00PM?

i don't even know when randy's getting in, so i wouldn't count on us.

Glasvegas and Ida Maria are playing at the Rialto Theatre in Tucson on Saturday, 8/1.

Magnolia Electric Co is playing at Solar Culture Gallery, a cool small venue, in Tucson on Monday, 7/27. Or you can see the Album Leaf at Plush (the best venue in Arizona.)

The best small venues in Phoenix are, as mentioned, the Rhythm Room (~350) and Modified Arts (200-250) though neither of them have exceptional schedules that week. There are local CD release shows at Modified Thursday and Friday with Really Big Birds and Courtney Marie Andrews and I might go to the latter or both but that might not be what you're looking for.

SilverPlatter (http://silverplatter.info/shows/all_upcoming) will list (almost) all upcoming shows; I recommend checking there to see who you like.
