I appreciate that Amy. Is this something you have picked up about me? I think I have mentioned a few times that I usually try to go into most things with really low expectations only to be excited later.

A big mistake was getting super excited for Wilco at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago back in October of 2006, me and my ex flew out just for that show. They had beer but it was seated and I could swear it was a terribly flat and boring set, big downer. I had the same expecations for their Coachella 2005 set and that show was only a little bit better. So, low expecations for Tucson but I can't help but think Red Rocks will be all kinds of great. Here's hoping.

Well, it's better than Tempe Music Festival. But it's not even as good as most Edgefests. And there's no way it needs to be three days.

Sunday isn't bad...it'd be nice if The B-52s would move to Sunday.

This isn't going to help my misperception about Jason Mraz...that his last name is pronounced "Mister Arizona."

EDIT- HA! $55 a day! This will fail hard. If it was like $30-$35, they'd sell a lot to people just because it's something to do.

so with photo radar tickets, can you do traffic school online? how does that work?

You can't go to traffic school for those. This is the deal: You don't have to pay the ticket unless you get properly served. This can be done via certified mail or most likely by a process server who will come to your house two or three times dressed in plain clothes or possibly in some bogus uniform trying to fool you. They have 120 days to serve you or the ticket goes away for good. Don't sign for certified mail, the letter carrier could care less and the only time anybody sends certified mail is when they need proof you got the letter. Don't answer your door to strangers. I had a server come to my old condo in a uniform that said "Fun Deliveries". The letter you got is not a proper service. Keep your blinds closed. If they see that you are home they can leave the service even if you don't answer the door but they need proof. Your car parked out front or having the TV on is NOT proof.

06-04-2009, 09:00 AM

She was properly served; her parents acknowledged the ticket already. Besides, looking it up online constitutes as proof of receipt.

and even besides all that, i was actually speeding and therefore should have to pay the fine as a result. i've argued a ticket in court before when i didn't feel i was in the wrong and won, but i fully accept whatever's coming to me when i actually do something wrong.

WHY MUST THEY MAKE IT SO DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO DO THE RIGHT THING?!?!?!

i log-in online to view my citation.
i then click the option about "can i take defensive driving school" and it says "IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED PERMISSION FROM THE COURT".
i call the court. lady tells me i don't need permission, i just need to register & take the course a week before my trial date.
i call to schedule defensive driving school. defensive driving school says they are not defensive, send me to another school.
that school tells me i'm not eligble because it was a photo ticket on a freeway. ummm, why is it that when a cop gave me a citation for the EXACT SAME CRIME 5 years ago i was able to go to defensive driving school, but when i commit the EXACT SAME CRIME and have the citation issued by a camera, i am no longer elgible for this defensive driving school? why is it that when i log-in to view SPECIFIC information about MY citation, i am told about the defensive driving option that is not applicable to me and am also not given ANY information about how to obtain permission from the court or where to register?!

argh, since there are no points on your license i'm just going to pay the fucking fine and suck it up to my own stupidity. from what i remember, driving school was cheaper than a ticket in the past, but maybe that's not the case anymore anyways so perhaps this is all moot. i've already complained on the stupid azdps.gov & will be writing letters to my state representatives, but all that's probably useless as everyone hates these stupid cameras. how hard is it to accurately tell someone how they can resolve their issue though, christ!!! and why are these citations processed differently than normal citations?!?! the cop that pulled me over 5 years ago purposefully put the ticket at 70 and not 80 so that i COULD take traffic school, man, sure makes me miss cops!

moral of the story: don't speed.

hmm, maybe i made out then. could always be worse. i dunno, either way, i find this silly. i would think that the website that directs me to information about MY citation would accurately tell me how to resolve the situation, that's what i find annoying.

in my stupidity i didn't even consider that it might sell out since no one ever seems to know who they are here. i waited until today to go down to stinkweeds so i could buy a ticket in person AND enter that APW contest, but apparently the YYYs is sold out and the guy at stinkweeds had no fucking clue about any contest for APW. of course the guy at stinkweeds didn't SAY it was sold out, just that they weren't allowed to sell anymore tickets. so i drove by the marquee to see if the box office would be open today, but no, not at all. then i just borrowed my roomies computer now and saw it was sold out online. ugh, what a waste of a drive downtown :(

I did have to deal with two couples in front of me that decided to have conversations during a few of the songs. fucktards... and one girl kept walking past me in and out of the crowd for half the show...very annoying. but it still was a great show. they played a great set. can anyone type up a setlist, i cant remember the order of all the songs.

Setlist:

"Shame and Fortune"
"Black Tongue"
"Down Boy"
"Phenomena"
"Dull Life"
"Gold Lion"
"Heads Will Roll"
"Miles Away"
"Skeletons"
"Hysteric"
"Pin"
"Zero"
"Y control"

Encore:
"Cheated Hearts"
"Maps"
"Tick"
"Date with the night"

Review

Highlights of the review

Oft off-key though she may, it's impossible to take your eyes off Karen, as she demonstrated at the near-capacity Marquee Theatre last night, where the YYY's showed they very may well be the best band to come out of New York this decade, and are quite possibly the best art-punk band ever. Not that they're strictly an art punk band -- they are, after all, much more famous for their radio-ready ballads than the thrashy No Wave-type punk that made up most of their first record, Fever To Tell, and the DJ-ready electronic frills and steady beats of their latest, It's Blitz.

Switching up her accessories frequently (scarf made of giant gold sequins for "Gold Lion," werewolf mask for "Miles Away) Karen kept the ladies in the crowd guessing about her fashion choices, to great effect. Conferencing on stage and playing "Tick" after seeing a sign in the crowd during the encore, they also showed they're pretty down-to-earth for such a seemingly odd bunch. It seems weird to think of the YYY's eventually taking this show to amphitheaters and small arenas, but if you'd asked me seven years ago whether they'd be playing rooms this big three albums in, I probably would have doubted you. Karen's performance artist streak carried well in clubs, I'd say, but she couldn't cut it in a place as big as the Marquee. Boy was I wrong.

Arizona GOP advances limits on abortion
2 bills gain ground in Senate
by Casey Newton - Jun. 11, 2009 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic

Two bills restricting abortions advanced on Wednesday, increasing the likelihood Republican lawmakers in Arizona will achieve one of their highest legislative priorities by the end of the session.

The Senate Public Safety and Human Services Committee recommended approval of bills that would require a 24-hour waiting period for abortions and would increase penalties for a controversial late-term procedure the bill calls "partial birth abortion."

The bills, which Republicans have been trying to pass for years, have a better chance of becoming law because Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, who took office in January, has supported abortion restrictions.
"It's safe to say that the governor has a very consistent pro-life track record, both in the Legislature and her other elected offices," Brewer spokesman Paul Senseman said. He said the governor will not comment on specific legislation until it reaches her desk.

Brewer's predecessor, Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano, vetoed the nine anti-abortion bills that came to her desk.

Senate Bill 1206, one of the bills recommended for approval Wednesday, is one of the most far-reaching abortion bills introduced this session. Beyond a waiting period, it would:

Require that minors seeking an abortion first receive written, notarized consent from a parent or guardian.

Require that the physician who is to perform the abortion inform the woman about alternatives to abortion, the medical risks associated with both having an abortion and carrying the fetus to term, and the probable gestational age and physiological characteristics of her fetus. They must do so at least 24 hours before performing the abortion.

Bar any individual who is not a physician from performing a surgical abortion.

Allow doctors, pharmacists and other medical professionals the right to refuse to participate in an abortion or to prescribe emergency contraception.

A similar bill passed the Arizona House of Representatives in March. If SB 1206 passes the full Senate, as expected, the bills will be reconciled in a conference committee and transmitted to the governor.

"Poll after poll shows the strong majority of Americans support these types of provisions," said Cathi Herrod, president of the conservative Center for Arizona Policy.

"It's intended to empower women by making sure they have full and adequate information before they make that decision," she added.

The bills recommended for approval Wednesday are the most restrictive of the five abortion bills under consideration this session. The bills finally moved forward Wednesday after Senate President Bob Burns lifted a ban on hearing measures not related to the fiscal 2010 budget.

Herrod said 30 states have some requirement to inform women about abortion risks and alternatives.

Supporters of abortion rights said the provisions of the bill would reduce the number of Arizona communities where abortion is available from 10 to three. The requirement that a physician meet with a woman at least 24 hours before the procedure would limit the areas where it can be provided because physicians would be less willing to make multiple trips to rural areas, according to Planned Parenthood.

Bryan Howard, chief executive of Planned Parenthood Arizona, said the bill would require abortion providers to tell women that government services will help them care for their newborns, even as the Legislature has passed a budget that would cut those services.

"That's not just dishonest, it's cruel," he said.

Howard said women will have to travel farther, take more time off work and spend more on child care to get abortions. The cost to Arizona women will be more than $1.5 million a year in addition to the cost of the procedure, he said.

There were 10,486 abortions performed in Arizona in 2007, with 90 percent taking place in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Rory Hayes, a lobbyist representing the Arizona Nurses Association, said her members object to the provision allowing medical professionals to refuse to provide emergency contraception on moral or religious grounds.

As written, the bill has no requirement that the professional refer the woman to someone who will provide the service.

"If a victim of a sexual assault comes to an emergency room, we want them to be able to get all the information about what their options are and potentially a prescription," she said.

The second measure, Senate Bill 1138, would impose a fine or two-year prison sentence on a person found to have performed the illegal abortion procedure known medically as intact dilation and extraction.

Currently, the crime is punishable by one year in prison.

"It's a horrible procedure," said Sen. Linda Gray, R-Phoenix.

while i support abortion rights, i am not a fan of partial birth abortions. i also hate these types of bills that are made to appear to give a woman a choice when really it's just an attempt to make the process more difficult so that they won't make the choice to have an abortion.

i mean, i'm ok with the idea that a physician should perform the abortion, but why should that physician personally meet with the person before the procedure? the actual procedure takes like 2 minutes and the women is awake, so i just don't get why this step is necessary or helpful. aren't you required to get a sonogram before the procedure anyways at planned parenthood? isn't that appointment enough?

AND WHY ARE DOCTORS ALLOWED TO REFUSE PRESCRIPTION OF EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION!??!?! it's basically doing what birth control does, right? so do they have the right to not prescribe birth control? what the fuck is wrong here?!?!

and i'm sure that 16 year olds having abortions are going to find it's a piece of cake to get a notarized signature from their parents in time to perform an abortion, GAH, IF SHE'S FUCKING LET HER MAKE HER OWN CHOICES.

ugh, it's just such a messy issue and i know it's not getting resolved anytime soon, if ever.

so what do we think about this?

Those bills are awful and I hope the few Democrats/sane folks in our legislature can do something to stop them.

Also, specifically

Allow doctors, pharmacists and other medical professionals the right to refuse to participate in an abortion or to prescribe emergency contraception.

This part is befuddling to me.

Or, at least, I have no problem with allowing such folks to refuse to do aspects of their job - pretty much no matter what those aspects are, pretty much for whatever reason they want - but I am also for consequences for such people.

If I started refusing to do parts of my job I'd get reassigned or fired just as a reasonable business decision; same thing should happen here.

mountmccabe
06-12-2009, 11:48 AM
You're missing the point, Randy.

What's going on here is that the government is trying to mandate that employers can't mandate what their doctors/pharmacists/etc can do. For this one particular thing, that is.

chairmenmeow47
06-12-2009, 11:48 AM
i just think if you are against prescribing emergency contraceptive, you should be against prescribing normal contraceptives. both prevent conception, right? therefore they aren't "abortion" pills and shouldn't be tagged onto this bill.

RotationSlimWang
06-12-2009, 11:56 AM
The thinking of the doctors who would actually opt to flex their right to deny morning-after pills is curious indeed, but the legal statutes regarding it are reasonable enough. I suppose the actual event of contraception does make something of a difference in the moral question. Some people don't believe in contraception period. Christianity is nutty.

mountmccabe
06-12-2009, 11:56 AM
The problem with that, Ivy, is that "emergency contraceptives" don't necessarily prevent conception. They can prevent implantation of the already fertilized egg (i.e. they are contragestion, a word Firefox's spellchecker doesn't even recognize.)

If someone believes that life begins at conception then they could consider morning after pills - or any other type of birth control that doesn't literally prevent conception - still potentially abortion.

thanks for the clarification, john. from my understanding, it's similar to taking a high dose of birth control. i guess if you take a high does of birth control, it acts as a contragestion, or am i on the wrong track?

either way, everyone i know who's ever tried to get the morning after pill has run into roadblocks and ends up taking a double dose of their girlfriend's birth control anyways.

and for the first time while riding the light rail the other day, i was actually asked by staff for my ticket. so i guess they do check, fancy that.

Mine was like $3000-$4000, and $2500 was dinner and booze. There's no reason to spend a ridiculous amount on a wedding.

And I used to do wedding videos...I stopped because the clients were so fricking cheap. They would spend $1500 on a cake that's gone in an hour without blinking, but for some reason, that was too much to ask for a video that they could look at 50 years from now. I mean, I wouldn't pay anything for a wedding video, but these were people who called me, so presumably it was worth something to them. Just not as much as a stupid cake.
