Bummed I couldn't go. Actually had some free lawn tix pretty much in hand, but got deathly ill (and I mean deathly) early Friday morning.

Sounds like I missed a good time. And, Randy...could not agree with you more on the talking bit during shows. I hate that passionately.

i posted my nin review in the nin thread. dead souls, DEAD SOULS!!!!!!!

sorry we did not make it to the party. i was all ready to party friday night, but then it seemed like everyone was heading different places and randy had gotten into it with the people that wouldn't stop talking so that wouldn't have worked. i was not into leaving the hotel at all saturday, sorry. my dad had gone to a lot of effort to extend the reservation on that thing for me and i wanted to take advantage, especially since we had a ten am checkout. hope everyone had a blast :)

I believe I took video of Dead Souls. I forgot which song I recorded and I was too tired this weekend to put my pics/video on my computer. I'll let you know when I get that thing on YouTube.

Wish I could've hung out with you and Randy more. Like I told Randy that night, Loca and her sis were the reasons I was there. So my plans were set in stone for a couple of months. I ended up having way too much fun on Friday night.

I went home and crashed-I was freaking beat between those beers, the vodka, and Ally's Snickerdoodle. nomnomnomonomnom.

There was a loudmouthed bitch in front of me and to the right. I just said, GOD SHUT UP ALREADY and I didn't hear a peep out of her again (clearly not the same person).

Also, Ivy, I'm sure everybody understood that you wanted to get back to the hotel to get down with your boyfriend. I don't think anyone took offense.

I am sorry if my sister and brother talking ruined anyones night. I think my sister was there more for JA then NIN since she has seen them several times. I am not sure what they were discussing as I was dancing and enjoying the music. Having teenagers though has taught me the fine art of tuning people out. I look forward to the next time we all get to hang out, hopefully there will be no drama then.

Loca, the girl in front of me yapping wasn't your sister. So she didn't ruin my night.

Also, I hate frontmen that feel the need to roll around on the stage and beg people to clap for them. If you're doing a good frontman job, you don't need to ask people to cheer for you.

it didn't ruin my night; i just moved to avoid the conversation and get my dance on for down in it. i just thought it was funny cause when randy asked about meeting up with you guys after i said "well, you just yelled at the person who's house they are going to..." so it just was not in the cards.

i am kinda interested in crystal method. i think i know some other people going too. has anyone done presale and wanna send me info since i'm kinda busy?

i've never heard of it either. i'm guessing it's either the name of a weekly at a bar on mill, or it's a bar that's changed ownership and is trying to be edgy by allowing dance music, only to later realize it's not profitable and do the top 40s thing. but that's my guess :p

That won't work, Ivy. If you say you're one of them or act like one of them, they have to make sure you're going to church. We have a neighborhood Mormon couple that keeps leaving us notes on our door because Jacob belonged to the Mormon church as a child and left the church as an adult. Ugh.

Sorry I just had to share.

Black Thumbnail is a good closer. Probably the best closer they have in their catalogue. Glad they buried Sex on Fire in the middle.

Freebird & Monkey Sex: A Night With Flight of the Conchords
By Michael Lopez in Concert Review
Wednesday, May. 20 2009 @ 8:16AM

Though music and comedy may seem suitable bedfellows, the marriage of the two is often a mangled mess of bad puns and crappy guitar playing. One concept is, more often than not, more polished than the other -- the comedian sucks at playing guitar or the musician tells super lame jokes. It's a novel concept, indeed, but it usually pans out into one boring, awkward night.

Tuesday night's show at Dodge Theatre, however, was not one of these nights as New Zealand's "fourth most popular folk duo," Flight of the Conchords, captivated the more than eager crowd with their hilarious and unique music. Sure, it was like shooting fish in a barrel for the talented duo, but they pretty much nailed every fish in that damn barrel.

It's safe to say that 95% of those attending the show has seen at least one episode of Flight of the Conchords, the HBO show featuring Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement as transplanted Kiwis trying to make a living in New York City, playing folk music while dealing with their one insanely devoted fan and clueless manager. Perhaps the other 5% has heard some of the songs from the duo's 2008 self-titled album. No matter what the case, the crowd was eating out of McKenzie and Clement's hands right from the opening chords of their first song, "Too Many Dicks on the Dancefloor."

What is so undeniably charming about McKenzie and Clement is their hilarious banter in between songs and their impressive ability to improv pretty much anything -- and the eager Valley crowd threw plenty at them. Take for instance one female fan employing the fellas to "take it off!," thus prompting Clement to suggest some jackets be brought from their tour bus so that they could, in fact, take those off for the fans. In what I found to be the funniest part of the night, the two described how they were one of two bands to earn the distinction of playing with the New Zealand National Symphony. They then went on to elaborate that OMC -- of "How Bizarre" fame -- was the other band to earn the distinction, further displaying their sarcastic reverence for their fellow countrymen. Once the "symphony" was brought on stage, we were able to see it was one dude who played the cello, a subtle jab at New Zealand, but a funny one, no less (the rest of the symphony, scrapped due to budget cuts, was one fellow who played the trumpet and another guy who just danced in the corner).

In between songs, which were all performed rather effortlessly, McKenzie and Clement were able to riff on getting blowjobs, doing "band stuff" like readjusting the microphone (you know, stuff people who aren't in a band wouldn't understand) and explaining to one fan that Murray was not going to emerge from backstage, against his shouting wishes. Clement explained to the fan, "Our show isn't a documentary. Murray is not our real manager, he's not somewhere backstage." In their most sublime moment of the night, the duo told the crowd how much they care about the "issues," leading into a lengthly discussion of giving whales cell phones, so as to help them from any danger, like drowning ("why are their mammals in the ocean?"). Both of them simulated a 911 call between a whale and the operator, with McKenzie doing a spot-on whale imitation and Clement as the operator, responding with such quips like, "Your problem is very soothing" and "I just meditated to your call."

McKenzie and Clement are, as well as being very funny and able to handle most situations on their feet, talented musicians as well. This was evidenced by Clement's tangent after a fan shouted out, with a total lack of ingenuity, "Freebird!" We were treated to a pretty impressive 3 minute rendition of the Lynrd Skynrd epic lead by Clement with McKenzie chiming in for comedic effect. Hoping to perhaps top himself, Clement even treated fans to a short version of Prince's "When Doves Cry," and I must say I was floored at how well he handled both songs. Don't get me wrong, I loved their set and their comedic resiliance, but Clement's ability to playfully take songs like "Freebird" and "Doves" shows just how talented he and his fellow Kiwi-in-crime really are. Going into a Flight of the Conchords show, one has to know that they will be treated to something equally funny as it is musically polished. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are two professional musicians who just so happen to be as funny and as quick-witted as most anyone you can find these days. They treated the crowd to a show they've most likely never seen, and one they won't soon forget.

Setlist:

"Too Many Dicks on the Dancefloor"
"Hurt Feelings"
"Stana"
"The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)"
"Jenny"
"I Told You I Was Freekie"
"Foux Du Fafa"
"Carol Brown"
"Mutha'uckas"
"Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenocerous"
"I'm Not Crying"
"Freebird" (Not the whole song, but an impressive take on it)
"Think About It"
"When Doves Cry" (Explained by Clement as an "indulgence")
"Epileptic Dogs"
"I'm In Love With a Sexy Lady"
"Sugalumps"

Encore:

"Business Time"
"Bowie"

Critic's Notebook:

Last Night: Flight of the Conchords at the Dodge Theatre.

Better Than: Popping in that Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny DVD you own.

Personal Bias: Yes, I have seen every episode of Flight of the Conchords and I may have dressed up like Jemaine for Halloween two years ago.

Random Detail: McKenzie and Clement couldn't quite decide what to call the crowd in attendence, either Phoenix or Scottsdale or Arizona. It was funny when they misheard a fan and called it "Scotchdale," though.

Further Listening: "I Told You I Was Freeky," from the espisode "Wingmen." The version from the episode is rather funky, yet the duo's stripped down live version still managed to delight and impress.

By the Way: A two hour comedy show is impressive, and McKenzie and Clement had no trouble filling the time. They played a good number of their songs and still left off some of their funkier songs from the first season of their show (like "Ladies of the World" and "Inner City Pressure").

One More Thing: It was very selfless for the duo to take not one, but two requests shouted at them from the crowd ("Carol Brown" and "Epileptic Dogs").

i was also thinkin about using the light rail to get back and forth as i might not be in the right state of mind to drive afterwards....

looks like the light rail last pickup starts at about 11pm...however the marquee stop is right about the center of the line, so it'll come thru about 11:30. most marquee shows i see end about 11-11:30, so it'll be VERY close. some weekend ones run over til 12-12:30 though and i don't want to leave early. i may just have to drive afterall...

Box office closes at 6pm unless there's a show.

If you are purchasing tickets for a future show, and there's a different show going on that night, let the parking attendents know and they should let you park in the main lot for free or at least they used to.

Apparently it's fun to hate on Kings of Leon (a run-of-the-mill rock band), but there are seriously MUCH worse bands out there.

I'm not hating on them when I say this...I'm not sure I've ever heard them. Looking at this setlist, none of these titles look familiar to me. I'm sure I've heard a few songs on car commercials or whatever, but I wasn't aware of them being KoL. I hear the name all the time, but I never hear the music.

I'm just mystified that they could get billed so high or play a 5000 cap venue. I'm sure it's my fault and not theirs.

You could do a lot worse than Bruce McCulloch performing "These Are The Daves I Know."

Marquee is 1500.

When it first opened as the Marquee it was about 900, then they made improvements to the bathrooms and such and got it to 1001 (which meant it could be all ages and still have free roaming alcohol.) They have since made further improvements and gotten it up to 1500.

My review of Nick Warren @ Cream Stereo Lounge tonight.

First time at this club for me. 1,000,000 x better than Myst. Plenty of parking. $15.00 @ the door, NO dress code/ No line when I showed up @ 12:00. Friendly door guy. Pretty small club. Not a bad crowd at all, everybody seemed nice. I found plenty of room to dance unlike Myst. Great lights, not overdone.
Nick was brilliant as he has been every time I've seen him. Danced my ass of completely chemical free not even one drink. He showed me again why he's my favorite.

I love Wednesday as a house night because it cuts way back on people that are out just for the sake of being out, or don't know what else to do with themselves, or just trying to get laid.

I will definitely go back. They have booked some serious talent. 5/27 Nic Fanciulli, 6/24 Lee Burridge, 8/5 16 Bit Lolitas, and they are also bringing out Shapeshifters (UK)

This was a completely different experience than going to Myst or Radius or E4. Seriously give this place a chance. I'm telling you the Wednesday thing makes a big difference. Oh and the opening dj for Lee is Nick Van Diver who is local and really talented.

hey come on who's going to paramore/no doubt on saturday?!?!?!?

By Mike R. Meyer Back when I used to write for another Valley weekly that shall remain nameless, we used to play a game called “Nickelback Or…?” The object of the game was to determine what concerts, if any, could possibly be worse than a Nickelback show. One of the only rules of the game was that you had to nominate real, currently existing bands. For example, you couldn’t just nominate an imaginary All-Suck supergroup with, say, Scott Stapp on vocals, C.C. DeVille on guitar, Meg White on drums, etc. This rule also disqualified No Doubt, who, at the time, was on hiatus to accommodate lead singer Gwen Stefani’s foray into dance pop. Now that the kings (and queen) of watered-down bubblegum ska have returned, I decided to put them to the “Nickelback Or…?” test. The scoring algorithm is much too complicated to explain in detail here, but suffice it to say, after careful consideration of all relevant factors, No Doubt emerged as a slightly less repugnant concert choice than Nickelback, with one important caveat: Stefani’s solo work was left out of the equation. If No Doubt decides to surprise the crowd with an impromptu rendition of Hollaback Girl,” all bets are off. (Paramore and The Sounds open up the show).

I can't wait.

(and, yes, it is right at 1000 capacity.)

Marquee isn't horrible but it also isn't anything special. It has no life. There's just no other venues in Phoenix in the 700-2000 capacity range so it gets some really good shows.

And the current capacity is right around 1500. They may sell fewer tickets for shows when they're doing seats in the back or something but full seatless capacity is 1500.

i had a good time at the crystal method. glad i missed tranzit & wish i'd missed solomon. just not a fan of either. the only tranzit set i ever enjoyed was a NYE set 2002/2003; however that was before he was really big so that might be why. i really just hate that he plasters his face on everything and could never remember my name until he found out i had a camera.

solomon needs to pick a genre. that was one of the worst dj sets i've ever heard in my entire life. i knew i wasn't going to be a fan of either set though. i just hope they don't have a google crawler that sends them to this thread :p

crystal method was alright. i dug the lighting set-up. i was pretty sleepy though and ducked out sometime after midnight. glad to see everyone i saw :)

the marquee has really gone downhill. no parking by the lake and no signs to tell you that from the street. i tried to turn off of washington, guy points me down the road, i try to turn off of mill, guy tells me i can't park there because the city of tempe won't let me and i have to go across the street to the garage. why couldn't the first guy tell me that? i finally enter the garage and the parking attendant is on the right. as though we are in england or something. and no one at the door checks my ID for a wristband or mentions that this is necessary so i only find out when i go to order a drink. small things, but those small things added up to annoying. how fucking hard is it to throw a concert?!?!

Ivy, we tried to park down by the lake, and when the parking attendant saw us coming from there he said we couldn't park there because the city locks up that parking lot at midnight. So we moved and parked in the regular parking lot for $5. :nono But the show let out at 1am, so it was good that we moved. I hate paying for parking but that comes from growing up in Phoenix and not having to pay for parking anywhere. I guess I was spoiled.

I had a great time at Crystal Method and all the music sounded great to me, probably because I was rolling, although I decided I'm not really that much of a Crystal Method fan. I only recognized the last 2 songs. :)

To celebrate seven years as one of best weekly hip-hop nights in the Valley, the Blunt Club has booked a headliner worthy of such an anniversary bash: [Gift of Gab http://www.myspace.com/

theofficialgiftofgab], one-half of Blackalicious and a member of the Def Jux-backed Mighty Underdogs, is the featured guest next Thursday’s throwdown. If you’re skeptical about why the man calls himself the Gift of Gab, take heed. My guess is, we’re in for some ridic freestyles next week. Also appearances by GRIME, NO APOLOGIES (Brad B, Emerg, & Foundation) 2on2 BBoy Battle hosted by Dj Element. A Sticker Show "Sticker Phiends 2" Featuring Sticker art from hundreds of artist's worldwide.. Dubstep X Hip Hop set by Xian 1.. Dj';s Pickster & Element. Art by (Inkaholics|AlphaMonsters) Dumperfoo , Stacks Malone, & Griffin One.... And This show is 18+ (a rare experience) full bar for 21+

i don't know the artist, but i'm thinking of going since it's a blunt club anniversary & it's down the street.

Actually, AC is a very good band, just because you don't like them or supposedly got a migrane from watching them at sasquatch doesnt mean they should fail. It's all opinion my friend. I wasn't talking about the likliehood of them failing or if they deserve to fail. I simply said they gave me a migrane and I wanted them to fail. That's all. No super analytical stuff on my part. I understand they have mass appeal amongst this music community.

Just so we are clear, I don't want them to fail because I don't like them. I want them to fail because they gave me a headache at a music festival. :)

you are on MDT. this is because you are in New Mexico.
Phoenix is on MST, because most parts of Arizona do not observe Daylight Savings Time. The exception is the Navajo reservation, which is also in New Mexico and they want to (understandably) keep everybody on the same time. Interestingly, though, the Hopi Nation, which is fully contained within (i.e., entirely surrounded by) the Navajo Nation, does not observe DST. So the Navajos are like this donut-shaped exception in the northeastern corner of the state. Except that Arizona is itself the exception to the national rule, so really, the Navajo donut is the exception to the exception, and the Hopi nation is the exception within the exception to the exception.

The San Carlos hosted Adult Swim last summer, this year it's hosted by downtown's newest eyesore in beige, the Wyndham. Or Sheraton, whatever its called. These pool parties seem to end kinda early, usually around 11-12ish at the latest, but more and more people show up as the summer goes on. Fire marshall tends to start showing up too.

The San Carlos also has a sunday evening party that starts at the pool on the 3rd floor and moves to the downstairs bar around 9 or 10. I give that one a :thu

I just read that Soulwax is at the Wyndham, which is not the new eyesore, the Sheraton (which from the outside is bland, but the inside is crazy). The Wyndham is still walking distance for people going to Depeche Mode at US Airways Center, and is actually closer to US Airways Center than the San Carlos. Either party would be a good starting point for people looking to preparty before Depeche Mode or post-party.

And I'm highly recommending checking out Black Moth Super Rainbow at the Rhythm Room if people are up in the air about which show to attend tomorrow night. If you're over 21, $1.50 PBRs and Schlitz at the Rhythm Room is an added bonus.

But we all know what Dylan was really asking. :) Unless he was genuinely curious about MST vs MDT.

The "S" and the "D" have meanings, and in this particular conversation, they are the most important part of the acronym. Dylan asked a yes or no question. D= yes, S= no. That's a pretty important distinction.

If someone says the exact opposite of what they mean, and then everybody else just assumes that you mean the opposite...then language begins to lose it's meaning.

I think the last time we had this conversation, it was because Ticketmaster listed something going on sale at 10am PST, even though the entire west coast was on Daylight Savings. In that case, while we "knew what they meant", they were posting the incorrect time of a time sensitive event. That's just unacceptable.

If people would just say "PT, MT, CT, ET", it would save them a letter, and eliminate the chance to be 100% wrong. Sometimes it's better to be less specific if you aren't sure you're right.

MT isn't clear.

Arizona's MDT currently lines up with PST but we are never PT. If Arizona times were posted as "MT" then even though that would be an accurate shortening of MDT it would cause confusion with the mass of folks on MST - such as those in New Mexico.

Though time zones isn't my favorite topic right now. I got up Sunday morning at 2 am EDT to drive to Detroit to fly to Phoenix. I arrived just before 9 am MST. I barely dozed on the plane and didn't allow myself to do much more than doze during the day and went to bed around 8:30 pm MST... which is about when shows at Modified and the Rhythm Room were getting going. I wanted to go to both but I also needed to get up just before 5 am MST this morning for work... and if I'd've stayed up that just wouldn't've happened.
