So is Rick the only one going to Asobi Seksu tonight?

I am going to that show. My focus will even be mostly on the bands playing at the Trunk Space; though I will be happy to be able to head over to the Bikini during set breaks.

Hayden Square Amphitheatre! I saw the weirdest bill ever there...Meat Puppets, Charlatans UK, and They Might Be Giants.

I also DIDN'T go see Pixies with Pere Ubu there, which is one of the great regrets of my life.

So many fond, fond memories of Hayden Square.

My one great hope is now that the corporations are slowly moving out of Mill, maybe the once great art vibe will return to downtown Tempe.

I can dream...

The night was good. The trunk space was small and sounded awesome. It was great hanging out with John, Rick and Joel and seeing Gonshman and meeting another board member I forget his name but he reads us all the time apparently. I think boardies made up 20% of the audience with a total of maybe 50 there but I think that's a little high of an estimate.

Asobi Seksu really rocked and definitely had the noise with them. I think this is the third thread i've posted pictures of Yuki in but to be fair two of the threads were relevant, like this one since the show was in Phoenix. :)

Dredg at Martini Ranch last night was great, Judgement Day were cool and I ran into some friends from my hometown that I have not seen in years. I saw a dude with a Morrissey shirt on and I complimented him on it and he seemed pleased.

The sound was good and the crowd was prob about 150 max.

After the show me and my friend went backstage to talk to them about how tight they are with their booking agent, ended up drinking their beers and smoking cigarettes and planning a show in Flagstaff with RX Bandits. If all goes well we will have that show down there in a couple of months after they get back from overseas.

I dont really like sphongle (sorry) but I will go to the bassnectar festival. I am really interested in meeting M Sparks there if he is down to party.

i really want to go to bassnectar, but i have a feeling it will be hard to find someone to go with me since i know about 80 people with june birthdays. i'll know more on whether or not i can make it closer to the event. i'd also probably want to get a hotel to avoid having to drive straight home.

I had been wondering what was going on for a few days. A couple days ago in this thread I posted conflicting tour dates and venues for Phoenix. He was slated for the Clubhouse on Sunday on once site, another said the Clubhouse on the 20th then his own website said the Brickhouse in August which really had me scratching my head since I thought that venue was closed down.

I want to see him too so I guess i'll await further news. I want him to play The Beautiful Struggle from start to finish then he can sprinkle in whatever new shit he is promoting. :lool

We'll actually probably roll in closer to 7:00. I won't get home from work until 6, and that first band is going to suck and need to be missed.

EDIT: Possible schedules for the show --

For WEEKDAY shows:
Street Sweeper Social Club: 7:00 - 7:30pm
Nine Inch Nails: 7:45 - 9:15pm
Jane's Addiction: 9:30 - close

For WEEKEND shows:
Street Sweeper Social Club: 7:30 - 8:00pm
Nine Inch Nails: 8:15 - 9:45pm
Jane's Addiction: 10:00 - close

Does any enterprising individual want to contact the venue and see whether this will be considered a weekday or weekend show? If NIN isn't starting till 8:15, I don't want to get there a full hour earlier.

I will buy any ticket anyone has to sell for a reasonable price based on where the seat is.

Seriously, lawn, pit, reserved. I just want to go.

And Dave Matthews was great last night. It was my third time seeing him, and the first time I've been so close (5th row, dead center). I was about to buy a 40 dollar lawn ticket from a scalper when a lady comes up to me, asks me if I need a ticket, then hands me the fifth row one and says "enjoy the show." Hopefully I'll get an opportunity to pay it forward, because that was so cool.

Dave played stuff off of the new album, which actually sounds pretty good. They also went through Everyday, Warehouse, Crush, Grey Street, Don't Drink the Water, Tripping Billies, Dancing Nancies, and closed with All Along the Watchtower.... I got a setlist, I'm excited.

Tim Reynolds is apparently touring with them, and he can absolutely wail on guitar but can't be taller than 5'4". Their new multi-instrumentalist, Jeff Coffin, I think is actually a better musician than Leroi Moore.

So, there's my review for those who care.

On the Renaissance Fair radio station commercials they would always say "huzzah!" at the end, so I guess the term is possibly (or anachronistically) from that era.

Used to express joy, encouragement, or triumph.

1. A shout of "huzzah."
2. A cheer.
"Th'dragon is dead! Th'Knights o'th'Round killed'm, they did!"
And a rousing "Huzzah!" arose from the gathered masses.

Another odd one was Beck at the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts. I drank a couple cups of Beer and the crowd was full of snooty old people and young hipsters. It was an odd combination. Beck came out with his acoustic and about 5 songs in I almost fell asleep. Fortunately a guy in the front row was wasted and kept pounding his hands on the stage like a drummer from his seat but then they removed him from the show. It sounded fantastic but it was all the Sea Change stuff stripped down with a few tracks from Mutations tossed in and some great songs including an improv about how lame Scottsdale was with all of it's spas.

He's only gotten watered down and gone downhill from there if you ask me.

I have a short review of Company. I know there are at least some musical fans that are in this thread.

I saw the Phoenix Theater production today, the second time I have seen Company. It is one of my favorite Sondheim musicals and, after seeing the revival on Broadway, I was excited to see how it would translate to local theater.

It turns out they are putting on the original production, complete with all original orchestrations, giving the musical a synthesized, glossy feeling compared to the austerity of the revival (where all the actors also played their own instruments, with no props on a pure black and white stage). As a result, the characterizations changed from introspective emotion to very showy and hammy emoting. I know there is a certain amount of overacting that generally occurs in musical theater, but by playing every line for comedy the theater lost a lot of the deeper emotions in the story, about Bobby's struggles with his own decisions to remain a bachelor while living amongst all his married friends.

This production also reminded me how important voices are in musical theater. Obvious, I know, but there are some songs that can get by on character voices and others that just need to be sung with strength and skill.
For example, the lady who played Joanne, a cynical and older friend of Bobbys on her third husband, has by characterization a smokers rasp, drawling and scraping notes. Still, she brings the house down with her famous song, "The Ladies Who Lunch," (originally performed by Elaine Stritch, I suggest checking out some of the Youtubes). However, Bobbys final song, Being Alive, was destroyed for me because the actor just did not have the voice, basically half-speaking his way through and getting restricted on the high notes.

I want to share this video of Raul Esparza, who played Bobby in the revival of Company. I love his voice.

In closing, only go to see Company if you have more than a passing interest in the musical.

Not really a musical hater. Musical theater just isn't my bag. And I was mostly kidding, though there was a long string of posts there where my eyes just glazed over from having absolutely zero interest in what was being written about/discussed. I find that to be the case on most of the board these days, which is why this is one of the last remaining threads I read.

I wasn't actually trying to sway the conversation toward a Rick-approved subject, I just felt like making my snide comment. I just love the sound of my own voice and the sight of my own typing, that's all.

The fauxShow kids brought out D&D a couple of years ago and they dropped some heat on us. Smokin' hot shit. Looking forward to seeing them again.

Surprised no one's mentioned this yet:

Dammit, too many shows coming to town! All right, that's it, after the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, no shows for me till Depeche Mode. Need to exercise more fiscal restraint. It's ridiculous: I make more money now than I ever have before, and by a pretty good measure, yet I still can't seem to make any headway on my credit card bills. Is anyone else experiencing this?

long story short, i have a strange fascination with corn & use the term "corn" to describe things that are no good at all, such as "being punched in the face is CORN!"

Once, while driving through a rural-ish area, we were listening to a static-y local radio station and kept hearing the DJ plug a "corn festival".

After the 10th time they said it, my wife said "Why are they having a porn festival way out here?"

So anyway, thought the vibrator and the corn were related for a second. Greatest pic ever, BTW.

EDIT...Ahhhhh...I can now see that it's a cornbrator

ha ha ha ha, nice save. i know you didn't mean it that way and that jen prolly wouldn't care, but it was just funny to read this second comment as though you were like "SHIT, what if jen reads?!" just teasing :)

and yeah, two of my girlfriends had to go to like 3 porn shops to find that dildo. they said the store guy would be like "well, we have a cucumber" and they'd respond with "no, it HAS to be corn". also, one day my parent's garage flooded while i was living there and so they had to empty out my boxes. on my pile of stuff, the dildo IN THAT BOX was on top. oh what they must think of me...

YES. I think I will probably forgo Infected Mushroom this time, but I do want to hit Crystal Method on May 23 (memorial weekend!) if I can get a babysitter. Big if.

strip clubs are such a waste of money....especially now with all the laws about proximity for full nude... :( i haven't been to a strip club in over 8 years...

I had a bit of a problem with going to strip clubs when I first turned 21. I had poor self-esteem, which meant I couldn't land a girl to save my life, which meant I was sexually frustrated, which meant going to strip clubs seemed like a good use of my money. Then I moved out of my parents' house when I was 22 and all that disposable income I used to blow on lap dances evaporated. Can't say I really miss it.

Lawn tickets there will cost over $30 with fees I think.

This is a good deal 6 tickets in section 201. $55 each. I think that's the price before fees so you save that money.

Work release Mon-Thurs. Whether he actually is gonna go to work or just dick around on the computer at home (sorry if you're reading this and getting pissed at me, mob, I'll buy you a drink when you get out) seems to be the real question, according to the last text I received.

So do we think the Yeah Yeah Yeahs show is going to sell out, and if so, will it sell out before, say, this Friday? I'd prefer to wait till I get paid this week to buy my tickets but would be gutted if some enterprising scalper snatched up a grip of tickets and put them on the secondary market at twice face value before then.

(And yes, I'm fully aware that I attributed a collective consciousness to the Phoenix thread, something which I'm sure will bother some people much, much more than it will others.)

It was sold out because of scalpers, but there was no deman. If I hadn't bought a ticket beforehand I could have gotten one the night of, because scalpers ended up giving what they had left for 5 dollars.
