Don't have the full details yet since I just saw him in passing this morning, but I know that he played for three hours (did like five encores), and he said Leonard is a "must see again" for him-so it seems like it was awesome.

Sounds like Rick (or Jen) got his money's worth with such a long set. That's nice to know. I probably won't get to see him at Coach because someone will be conflicting with him (Paul, Moz, or Franz). I'd like to though.

faxman75
04-06-2009, 10:55 AM
Well it won't be Paul. Paul T has already stated Cohen is sunset at the Outdoor Theater. Hopefully he conflicts with Franz or Moz as I would miss either for Cohen. :)

If anyone is bored next Saturday night, I recommend heading up to the Orpheum in Flagstaff for more Calexico :)

Leonard Cohen was incredible. His voice is sharp, he's surprisingly spry for a 74-year-old (he would skip - yes, skip! - off the stage), his between song banter (what there was of it) was hilarious, and his band is solid. The show started just after 8:00 and the crowd erupted when Mr. Cohen walked on stage. The set began with "Dance Me to the End of Love" and "The Future." I don't recall everything else in order but know that "Bird on a Wire," which didn't strike me as a standout track on The Essential Leonard Cohen, was given a fantastic rendition last night. The last three songs of the first hour featured the phenomenal one-two punch of "Chelsea Hotel #2" and "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye," followed by "Ring Them Bells," which also struck me more strongly last night than it had on record.
There was a 20-25 minute intermission before the band came back out around 9:40. This second hour was a little slower paced but received the first standing ovation since the opening with "Hallelujah." (That's a little misleading, because dozens of people, particularly on the floor and seats directly in front of me, would stand after pretty much every song, but "Hallelujah" received the most rapturous applause.) 10:40 approached and Mr. Cohen introduced his band again, same as he did at the end of the first hour, and they left the stage.
I was momentarily distraught since they hadn't played "So Long Marianne." Fortunately I didn't have to wait for it much longer as that was the opener of the 1st encore. I don't recall everything that was played from then on out but they did at least 4 curtain calls. Their encores constituted another 40 minutes! After the penultimate one, when some people had started exiting and the band teased us with an imminent departure by playing "Closing Time," the audience practically let out a collective sigh that Leonard was coming out again. He played it up perfectly, launching into a song I don't know the title of but with the opening lyrics "I've tried leaving you a hundred times."

He is such a gracious, practically egoless performer. When introducing his band, he would bow to each musician. Again, he introduced them twice and they each got multiple solos. They all are featured in the program I purchased, which also calls attention to the behind-the-scenes members of the crew who help keep the tour running smoothly. He called the stagehands and technicians on stage to partake in the final bow. He thanked the audience for allowing him to perform for us on this "memorable evening." I don't care who he's performing against at Coachella, you are doing yourself a grave disservice if you miss his set.

Funniest line of the night: "The last time I was on stage was 14, 15 years ago. I was 60 then. Just a kid with a crazy dream."

I thought about going downtown and trying to grab a discounted ticket from somebody stuck with extras but I was too tired. That sounds like an amazing show but there's no way I would've made it until 11 pm, even with the seats. I guess I should've thought up my plan before working out in the morning and playing with my niece and newphew all afternoon.

Apparently someone went through our office parking lot and stole a few peoples catalytic converters out of the bottom of their trucks. This happened during business hours. Apparently the higher trucks are the target because it makes them easier to get to. I don't know what kind of vehicles you all drive but if you drive a truck or anything like that you might want to park closer to the building/garage/lit areas right now.

10. - hidden track, recorder comment -

Leonard Cohen sounded great - he has really hit his stride. The sound was great at this venue, especially in the sweet spot in front of the soundboard. If anything, things were a little too quite. Even recording on Hi gain, the result was too quite to really turn up the volume during playback and the difference between the performance and the audience's applause was significant (thus the sound processing noted above). I used a function on my Zoom known as Plug-In Power that feeds power to the mics and eliminates the need for a battery box. It worked fine, although perhaps a quality box would have provided a little more power to the mics and possibly created a louder, more dynamic recording (although testing at home with a battery box I do have did not produce any different results). I could have boosted the recording level above 100%, but everything I have read says not to and to "fix" volume issues after the fact on the PC. That is what I did. A lady a few seats down can be heard coughing periodically and you can hear my camera going off once in a while, but nothing bad. In my humble opinion, this is a solid recording.

Easter Moon was okay. We showed up waaaaay too early. Hanging out on that asphalt for so long shredded our legs. I thought Daedalus was pretty good, Z-Trip started off all right but then started to be a bit of a bitch, and we unfortunately had to leave at 3 (meaning about 40 minutes into Rabbit in the Moon's set) because I knew Jen was so exhausted that I didn't want to ask her to push through for any longer. She had already been such a trooper, which she wouldn't have had to have been if they didn't fall a full fucking hour behind schedule. I mean, seriously, how does that happen at an event like this? They had fools starting to spin at 6:30, AND they're DJs. How could they have experienced sound problems that were THAT bad?
What we saw of RITM was really amazing and Jen felt bad for wanting to leave. I've so far managed to refrain from giving her shit over the fact that the song they played immediately after we left (when we were practically at the exit already) was "Mind Fuct," which only happens to be: 1) my favorite RITM song; and 2) the performance I saw on a DVD that first got RITM on my radar and made me want to see them. We could've dashed back to see it but we were too tired to have done any dashing and, as I said, we were already almost to the car. Oh well.
But yeah, that wind...brr! And was it just me or did it not seem too heavily attended? Ivy, do you think they didn't promote this very well, is the rave scene in Phoenix just that dead, or did the promoters make a judgment error by holding this on Easter weekend when many college kids could be out of town due to the holiday? How many people would you say were there? I'd be shocked if it topped 5,000. I know you've got some friends "in the know." You think they turned a profit?

Oh yeah, nice hanging out with you and Jacob, Amy, and it was also nice to meet you, Manny (deniestheday). I think it's funny that I was able to identify you solely based on your description of wearing a "loud jacket."

I think we left into the 3rd song of RITM because the cold was so brutal. We saw the guy in the mirror ball suit saying something biblical-sounding as we were leaving. And was it just me or was the sound for RITM WAY TOO LOUD? My ears hurt even with ear plugs. Other than that, RITM seemed pretty awesome; we were just beat and frozen. We picked up some amazing fresh piping hot french fries at Whataburger on the way home.

i had SUCH a great time. had to keep dancing to keep from getting cold. only a few drunk tards, but thankfully my friend amy acted as security :) chali 2na was hands down my favourite of the night, but the sound issues overall were annoying. i was disappointed in z-trip. i miss his club old school hip hop/breaks sets, what's all this girl talk mash-up shit?! and tech itch was alright, but it was a bit too experimental for me. sucks cause i normally dig him, but it was hard to really get down. RITM being an hour late was extremely annoying since he was slotted for 1:30. we left about 3 and missed most of their set.

glad to see such talent in arizona though, despite the sound issues and lateness. hope this means more is coming in the way of quality events :)

here's some pics my friend gordon took:

Hi all. I was lucky enough to be in Flag over the weekend. The snow on Saturday was quite beautiful.

04-14-2009, 10:14 AM
I stopped in Flagstaff on Saturday night as well, had dinner and beers with friends at Bunhuggers. The snow was awesome. The drive home in snow and fog was difficult and stressful. I could barely see in front of me. Once I got down passed 89A and Prescott though it turned to heavy rain all the way into Phoenix.

04-15-2009, 09:50 PM
Had a good time at Conor last night. Happy he closed with "Milk Thistle," though I wish he'd chosen "Lenders in the Temple" instead. Oh well. Was surprised he played so much off of Conor Oberst. I'd heard he was notorious for ignoring his older catalogue, even stuff just one album ago, and with a new album due out in a month or two, I figured we'd be in for lots of songs I didn't recognize. Pleasant surprise, then. But yeah, he's a fantastic lyricist and I think it's wonderful that Coachella is putting him on right before Leonard Cohen. I think it's a nice little coincidence that the two artists whose concerts I attended over the last two weeks due to receiving tickets as birthday gifts are playing back to back on the same stage in less than a couple days. That being said, as much as I enjoyed Conor, he's conflicting with Franz Ferdinand, who I've never seen and won't be able to on this tour, so FF are winning out. That was sort of the point of seeing Conor here in town.

Didn't mean to seem rude when I ran into you, Dylan. I wasn't sure how long it was going to take me to get to the water refill station near the entrance and back to the stage. Leave it to me to assume a band's actually going to start on time.

Has anyone noticed the snowbirds are leaving. :D

Yes, it's FANTASTIC. My drives to and from work are so much nicer. Really compensates for it being so unbearably hot when I'm coming home (and it's barely in the 90s right now :nono).

I'm with ya, zzz's, I don't think I'm going to go on Saturday either. Since Coachella ended I've convinced myself to try and go to The Mile High Fest and Lolla.

Coachella convinced me that a festival setting is not one for me. Now more than ever I am opposed to attending any festival besides the one we were just at. The only thing that would get me to one is if that'd be the only place I could see Portishead, Massive Attack, the Knife, or Fever Ray. The fucking inconsiderate brats in the crowd just piss me off way too fucking much. Despite the meds I'm on and my attempts to focus on the music, I'm just too aware of what's going on around me and get bothered far too easily by assholes in the crowd to properly enjoy myself. I still plan on attending Coachella next year and will make reservations at the condo and request time off from work accordingly, but for the very first time I can see myself considering not going if I'm not bowled over by the lineup. Saturday was fucking HELL.

I'm also picking up my imported bottle of this at the P.O. tomorrow....

When we were last at Carly's Bistro, I had a drink of Absinthe. Couldn't tell you which brand it was 'cause I had a few other drinks afterward and got properly fucked up. Not so bad that I couldn't drive myself home, but bad enough that my memory of what else I drank is gone. Oh, and I tried crushing an uncrushable beer can on my head, leaving me with a new forehead scar that will forever bear testament to what idiocy I can participate in when drunk. I may have been very obnoxious that night.

The worst part of the recession is that there are homeless people hanging out asking for money on the islands at some intersections I have to drive through, or on the side of the road off the I-10 before I turn onto Elliot when I'm going to work in the morning. In the past, I would harrumph at them and be like, "Get a job!" But with the job market being what it is at the moment, I can't really say that because there aren't very many jobs to go around. So it really puts a crimp in my ability to be an asshole to the beggars, at least if I want to feel justified about it. Goddamn this economy.

I'm going to see a play tonight (Sweeney Todd) and Ladytron tomorrow, and I think we're cleaning out the garage on Saturday, so I really don't have the energy for another festival yet.

My co-worker is in it, and she can really sing! I'm looking forward to it.

I believe a couple of my friends are in this Sweeney Todd as well. Johanna, for one.

Is anyone interested in Erykah Badu May 30th at the Celebrity Theater?

I believe a couple of my friends are in this Sweeney Todd as well. Johanna, for one.

The one who played Johanna? (I didn't like her voice, too much vibrato). The play was really awesome. I think this is the last weekend. My co-worker Tracey played Mrs Lovett (who makes the horrible pies), and oh my god, she was AMAZING. Also really liked Anthony's (?) voice, Johanna's young suitor. I'm not too familiar with the play so forgive me if I get characters' names wrong.

And really bad timing with the Flaming Lips. I'm making an extra effort to see Ladytron tonight because they didn't tour here last year and they're only stopping in Tucson this year, but I can't really handle another live show after that such a short time period after Coach. I'm almost sick of music at this point.

I am hoping it's Larry English.

I am hoping it's not Donald Brown, who is the player everyone says they're going to take. Nothing against him -- he seems really cool and all -- it's just that I don't see the point of spending a 1st on an RB like that. i will also await instructions via text on where to meet tommy and the flaming lips gang!

and as far as sweeney todd the movie, depp and carter were pretty fucking awful singing wise. they butchered a little priest, i just love the wrong harmonies of the musical and the movie didn't do it justice. i thought the supporting players were pretty good though, especially antony. it looked good and had lots of the emotion, but the singing sucked from the two most important characters. also, they did not go NEARLY dark enough with todd's love for johanna. i was VERY disappointed with burton in that respect.

I'd almost prefer a post-show gathering at one of the places the captn recommended. Pre-show gatherings have that urgency that we have to be somewhere. After the show we can all get stupid, drunk and naked without fear of missing The Flips.

Or if it is before the show then somewhere that's pretty much walking distance from the fest.
