I use to hang out at Sugar Daddys quite a bit a couple years ago. I can believe it. They had a problem like that a couple years ago. Employees showed up to work and there were locks on the doors. I haven't been there in ages though, last time I went it was a little ummm... hard. Even for me. Too many black dudes in thier sports jersies and bandanas, 4 fights in one night, my friend who was a bouncer there got cut with a broken beer bottle by one of the dudes fighting, I havent been back since.

The following is the result of changes to Arizona law effective January 01, 2009

What's New

License Plate Holder Law - State law* requires that the state name at the top of Arizona license plates must be visible. Any license plate holder or cover that prevents the license plate from being clearly legible, is in violation of this new law.

There should be a law against personalized license plates that make no sense. I just spent an hour in my car and 20 minutes of that time was me trying to figure out what people were trying to say with their overpriced personalized plates. The one that I did get but still don't really get is someone has the plate saying DRINKQI. I am assuming Drinky... is that an automatic invitation to a DUI checkpoint?

So I guess this means the mailed tickets from the new speeding cameras will NOT include an advertisement hocking clear license plate covers. I swear to God I got an ad for this when I got a speeding ticket from a camera (a van near 7th St and Bell got me a few years ago).

I'm going to some Scientology pageant play tonight. Sounds disturbing and fun.

Is this at Stray Cat theater? This play was actually on Broadway for a while. It's a childrens telling of the basic teachings of Scientology. Look out for the scene where two children fight over another one (I won't elaborate, but it's one of the lessons).

Did anybody get my "thread's dead" comment or was it just that lame? I'm assuming it's the latter:nono

Anyways, Deadmau5 killed it, I liked his set a lot, specifically the first half of it. During the second half your typical scottsdale-douche-defining-dumbass would walk by you like he had somewhere to go only to stand directly in front of you. It got crowded and lame but overall great times. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow.

Next up.... NIN that show is going to be amazing.

Also, I really really reaaaaally think everyone should go see George Clinton on Jan 7, it's in the middle of the week which absolutely blows I know. But I'll be damned if George doesn't put on some of the most fun shows on the planet. He is right up there with Daft for sheer pleasure.

It was really damn good. An hour long. The kids were fucking brilliant. They may have done the scene you are talking about a bit different as the fight scene took place between multiple kids and turned into a bit of a musical number. The best though was all red yarn they used as blood and guts while the fight was going on. I highly recommend this show. Very entertaining and awesome seeing such young actors and actresses hitting it out of the park better than a lot of adults. :) Well worth the 20 bucks.

Deadmau5 was awesome. Myst sucks.

OK so I will never go to another show at Myst again.

First I made a mistake and did not get there till 10:30. I found a gold mine spot right in front of Suede and walked the alley to Myst.

Ivy was spot fucking on when she said that the VIP line would be longer than the general admission line. So I am in line for about 5 second asking people what the status is about will call and such and the door man is the biggest douche I have ever had the pleasure of being ignored by. As usual I did not dress up and there were people standing in line that did not even know that Deadmau5 was playing. Fucking status seekers.

I walk to the front of the line and I am ignored until about 50 other people get let in and the door man finally gets sick of me and lets me in. I will never buy another ticket to a show where I "might" get in, and it will be after "the beautiful people".

Deadmau5 set was fire. I walked up to the front where you could not see him but you were really close. This is where the majority of people that wanted to dance were. I get really sweaty when I dance so naturally I got lots of looks from the girls that look like they just stepped out for after prom that night. I fucking hated those dancing girls on the podiums, only one of them was hot and she kept having her back to Deadmau5 and when he would drop something hot, she thought everyone was cheering for her slow-motion thigh and tit rub down.

Photoradar has been abundant in Scottsdale for years. now the rest of the valley is having to get used to it. It just takes a little practice to memorize where the cameras are. There's one set I pass every day to and from work, and often a van at a 2nd spot.

I hate it too but I cannot think of one principled reason to oppose it. "I like to drive fast" doesn't seem good enough.

chairmenmeow47

the only other reason i oppose them is that it makes for less cops on the street. a camera is not going to catch someone who's drunk, for example.

Fine, maybe they can see them, but the FAA isn't complaining that pilots are being distracted by them. I'm barely distracted by them when I'm driving, so it's pretty fucking unlikely that someone piloting an aircraft is going to be like, "Oh, shit, what the fuck is that?!?" and crash because he saw some light flash on the freeway.

captncrzy
12-08-2008, 01:15 PM
I just called a pilot.

He said he doubts that pilots would even notice the lights due to A) the flight path (the landing flight path over Sky Harbor is over Buckeye/Lower Buckeye, not over I-10) and B) the direction the lights are aimed (the cars, not into the sky). If they did notice, they wouldn't be distracted by it-they see millions of lights on the ground.

He did say that those "movie premier" lights that are thrown up into the sky at night can be annoying-as were the strobe lights that they had coming out of the Luxor at one time.

I know this might not be the musical crowd, but I just got back from Spring Awakening at Gammage and it was fantastic. The second time I saw it (first was on Broadway) and just as good. Highly recommended, even for those who don't think they're musical fans; it is not your typical musical.

Dylanja, there are pictures and you tubes in this thread if you want to listen:

Is is very psychedelic trance (hence the "psy-trance" moniker in that thread) and very danceable. They really work a lot of different rhythms and beats into the SAME SONG, lots of trippy guest vocals, and amazing flute solos (I know, sounds dumb, but it's so beautiful! SRSLY). This is truly acid music. Jacob adores them, so I figure if we can see them live once, we'll probably go.

I think if we plan on the 30th then Ivy will be able to join us but I don't remember for sure. How does that work for everyone else. Once we figure out the day then we can go through the big process of figuring out the where.

Deluge of couples registering cars in each others' names
There is one proven way to get out of speed camera tickets, and that's if you can show the driver wasn't you. One of the local newspapers recently reported that couples are successfully getting out of tickets by driving each others' cars, and indicating that the person in the picture can't possibly be them - it doesn't look like them and it's the wrong gender.

Sheriff Arpaio stars in reality TV mini-series
December 16th, 2008 @ 11:28am
by Bob McClay/KTAR

"Smile! You're under Arrest!" That's the title of a new reality television show starring Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The show features actors who lure several suspects to a location with a promise that they might have a modeling career. Suspects were arrested when they arrived.

Arpaio said the taping of the three-part show led to hundreds of arrests.

"During the operation, I believe we probably arrested 20. That was just the first phase," Arpaio said. "The second phase was to go out and grab more on the information and intelligence we received from the producers. So, totally, probably 600 were arrested."

The sheriff added, "This is a little different twist, where the main mission is to have entertainment and to kill two birds with one stone and also arrest people."

On the show, Arpaio addresses the actors and the deputies participating, warning, "This is a very dangerous assignment to go after fugitives. You never know what's going to happen when these guys are wanted."

The targeted fugitives receive a letter promising that, if they come to the Myst nightclub in Scottsdale, they will get $300 and a chance at a modeling career.

Dave Sheridan is one of the actors appearing in the show.

"In this sting, we're going to be posing as a fake fashion show, it's going to be called 'Average Guy Clothing.' By the way, our target will be picked up in a limo, our very own limo. J.L. Time Limo Service. Get it?"

The suspects model black-and-white, jail-type clothing before a room full of undercover deputies, who then swoop in for the bust.

The three-part series starts Dec. 27 on the Fox Reality Channel, which can be found on Cox (Digital) 144, Dish Network 190 and Direct TV Channel 250.

Arpaio is not bothered that it will not get wider exposure.

"Do we want too many people to look at it so they'll get alert to it, suspicious when we keep doing this?" he asked. "I don't know. We'll have to see how it pans out."

Some see revival of old Mill Avenue in Borders closing
by Dianna M. Náñez - Dec. 17, 2008 01:28 PM
The Arizona Republic
Nico Holthaus, a longtime Tempe filmmaker, said he recalled the 2001 opening of Borders bookstore on Mill Avenue as a symbol of a changing downtown Tempe.

"You couldn't deny it anymore. There it was, the 'corporatization' of main street," he said.

Now, he views the January closing of the store as an opportunity - to revive independent business on Mill. Holthaus said it may be farfetched but he would love to see the Borders space broken up into incubator spaces and leased to independent businesses.
"I'd love music and books and artists there," he said.

This year, Holthaus released Mill Ave Inc., an independent film with scores of Tempeans' documenting the evolution of Mill. With the notice of Borders closing, many Tempeans are recalling the 'old' Mill Avenue and positing on what will replace the prime Border spot at Seventh Street and Mill.

Holthaus and other Tempeans realized the extinction of most of downtown's independent businesses did not happen overnight. It took place in small, barely noticeable steps until something once vibrant has disappeared.

In the case of Mill Avenue, many were left scratching their heads, wondering where the soulful sounds of independent music and merchants of downtown Tempe went. In their place over the past decade came corporate-owned businesses: Bath and Body Works, the Gap Inc., Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and Borders bookstore.

Gone was Long Wong's and with it went nightly local bands and cheap wings on Mill. Locally-owned Changing Hands Bookstore and its eclectic mix of used and new books and monthly book clubs also moved off of Mill when the owner could no longer afford the skyrocketing rent that often comes with a shift to corporate business.

While Tempeans have lamented the "corporatization" of Mill, last week they noticed that the economic slump may have spurred an unexpected opportunity to revive independent business downtown.

A closing business note hanging on the door of Border's bookstore, a 25,000-square-foot retail mammoth on Mill, signaled change. After the recent closing of Abercrombie, Gap and Bath and Body, Borders was one of the few corporate retailers left downtown.

And while few business owners want empty spaces, the chance to reshape Mill is causing a buzz amongst Tempe's old-timers.

Vic Linoff, owned and operated Those Were the Days bookstore on Mill for 35 years. Linoff closed the store in August. He still leases space, at a discounted rate, to two independent businesses.

Linoff said he rents for less because he thinks Mill will only survive the economy and competition from Tempe Marketplace, which opened nearby in Tempe last year, if downtown can offer "unique, one-of-a-kind shops."

"Mill is not a mall," he said. "If people want corporate stores they'd rather go to a mall. They'll come to Mill . . . for destination (shopping)."

Linoff said he would like to see another independent bookstore take the Border's space after it leaves in January.

José Ramirez, a real estate consultant with Urban Realty & Development on Mill Avenue, said Holthaus's idea of parsing the space for lease may not be as farfetched as it sounds. He said it would be great to rent the spaces to an eclectic mix of shops.

Mayor Hugh Hallman said that he sees Borders' closing as a chance to shift gears on Mill.

"I'm actually rather delighted that we're finally moving on away from the chain stores that got a hold of Mill Avenue. It was Borders that chased Changing Hands off of Mill," he said.

It would be really nice to have more local shops in place of that boarders. I wouldn't mind an attempt at a small locally owned music venue damn it.

Mill Ave Inc.the movie had it's heart in the right place but my god the editing was pretty terrible. I remember thinking I was dizzy much like with the Blair Witch project ecept this was way too many cut scenes in a row. That's the movie I met McCabe it.

Best part of it was seeing Sarasina (Long Wongs) standing in the now vacant lot reminising of what once was.

Long Wong's closed? That place was great. Is the Pink Pony still around?

Yes. Alive, and well.

Word. Fortunately there are tons of other Boarders around though. :)

That coffee plantation is pretty bad ass. Tons of tables, free wifi and loads of outlets. Lots of space.

12-17-2008, 02:17 PM
hey. why'd those places close?

Wongs was slowly becoming the sewer it smelled like. They initially said the plan was to destroy and rebuild. Owner of the property lived in Vegas. Turned out they just leveled it. I think it was either the Pistoleros or Los Guys who had a song called "sara says" about Sarasina the manager. You lose wongs, changing hands, beloes and a few other places and suddenly Mill is gone. Mill ave was a big reason I moved to the area. It had a lot of character. I remember back in 97' or so hearing Walt Richardson singing "down on mill ave." in Beloes during a visit. Part of that track was played in the Mill Ave. Inc. film with footage and interviews from Hans Olsen, Robin Wilson, Walt Richardson and many others including owners and managers of many of the places like Wongs and Changing hands.

Drive down mill ave and you'll see that it's half-empty. The buildings that sit around the old centerpoint theater are vacant and have been for some time. If they want those spaces filled, they're really going to need to lower their rents. There's some good restuarants on it (Med Fresh, a little mexican place) but most of the joints are still corporate owned (Taco Del Mar, Fatburger).

We did just get a Dunkin Donuts on 5th street, though. Yay donuts.

chairmenmeow47
12-18-2008, 07:36 AM
so there's a dunkin donuts at fifth street and the one on priest? what the fuck, dunkin?! why'd you close the one on broadway then?!

i think it's hilarious dunkin donuts closed all but like 3 stores and then now they are re-opening stores in locations close to where they were before.

captncrzy
12-18-2008, 07:48 AM
Yeah, Broadway is closed.

From what I understand, the franchisee closed ALL of his stores and then remodeled them all at once. So he remodeled the one on Priest and closed the one on Broadway and moved it to Mill.

Mr. Dylanja
12-18-2008, 07:53 AM
Didn't Krispy Kreme do the same thing?

The donut industry seems to be in a bit of a tizzy :)

captncrzy
12-18-2008, 08:35 AM
No, the KK franchisee went bankrupt because he oversaturated his market.

faxman75
12-18-2008, 08:37 AM
Dunkin is kinda known for its coffee too. Krispy needs to step it up a notch if it wants to remain viable in this economy.

They just opened a Long Wong's around the corner from my work. It is on Cave Creek south of the 101.

It kinda boggled me, seeing that sign there.

Yeah, there are loads of Long Wongs though. The original Long Wongs Wings is the location near Scottsdale Rd. and Thomas I think. I have seen them in the west valley as well. The Famous Wings on Indian School used to be a Long Wongs. They also have live music from what I recall. I have never been there though.

How awesome is Stinkweeds?! I just got back from there and bought 45s of Nude, Gamma Ray, and Time to Pretend as gifts and then got a great condition Talking Heads Fear of Music full album, all for under 20 bucks. Beats the hell out of Zia. I need to start saving to get the Kid A, Hail to the Thief, and OK Computer reissues.
