It was bad ass though it wandered a bit near the end and Ian's Mac broke. It was great hearing the songs build and seeing how much they were doing. I love the Rhythm Room. Avoid Pancho's Mexican Buffet. The show sold out. I had pictures and a review not much better than this one in the upcoming shows thread.

Article-super bad.

Weather-super super bad. I just walked to Starbucks and back; I'm pretty sure I lost 5 lbs in sweat. It's somewhat humid out today-I think that Monday is a pretty good monsoon guess.

So, I was watching the "News at 5:30" on Channel 10 a little while ago. I actuallly wasn't watching it as much as I was listening to it while I filed my nails. Anyway, their story at 5:32 (mind you, it started at 5:30, which means that this was like their second or third story of the night) was about a woman that got pulled over for going 90 in a 55 and she had kids in the car. That's it? That's the second or third most newsworthy story that happened in all of Arizona? Some lady was speeding? WTF?

LOL

The best part was that they went into detail about it; e.g.-she told the cops she was speeding because she was trying to get them to the bathroom. Then the cops questioned the kids and the kids told the cops that they, in fact, did NOT need to go to the bathroom. So the kids told on her.

These were almost the exact words used during the broadcast.

2 helicopters following police pursuit crash in Phoenix
The Arizona Republic
Jul. 27, 2007 01:35 PM

Two helicopters following a police car pursuit apparently collided over central-north Phoenix. At least three people have been confirmed killed.

The two copters were operated by Valley television news stations KNXV-TV (Channel 15), the local ABC affiliate, and KTVK-TV (Channel 3), which is unaffiliated with any network. It's undetermined how many people were on board the craft and whether there are any survivors.

The crash occurred around 12:45 p.m. in Steele Indian School Park near Third Street and Indian School Road.

"It was surreal, it was like watching a movie," Chris Miller, a central Phoenix business operator, told 12 News.

Bob Smith of Phoenix was about 100 yards away from the crash having a picnic in the park with his construction workers. "I heard the pop. They (the helicopters) exploded and went down. Debris is all over the park. It's surreal and unbelievable. Black smoke is everywhere."

Ian Pigg, 16, of Phoenix, heard the helicopters in the air so stood outside his home on Seventh Street. "We we watching the squad cars. Then we heard the pop and the hiss. It wasn't a loud explosion. It looked like the helicopters split in two. Black smoke came straight up."

Police have evacuated everyone from the park as soon as they could.

At least 15 cop cars and five firetrucks on the scene.

Police have shut down Indian School going to right and left of park and Third Street.

Another witness, Amber Eastep, told the station, "The two choppers hit and came down straight. There's 3 TV and then there's 15 and Fox 10 was just behind them. we thought it'd be all three of them (crashing)."

A third person, Dave Addison, speaking to KPHO-TV (Channel 5), the local CBS affiliate, "They both banged ito each other and broke into pieces."

It's believed there were as many as five people aboard the two copters. News anchors reporting on the crash on KTVK appeared emotionally shaken.

"It is very much a brotherhood, like firefighters,'' Scott Clifton, CBS 5 helicopter pilot, said of the Valley news pilots.

I don't know if it's that they want us stupid or have come to the realization that people just don't give a fuck any more. Either way, though, I think you are right on.

There was a stick on ad -- sort of like a post it note -- stuck on to the front page of the Republic this week. I mean, hundreds of thousands must have gone out, one on every single paper delivered. Someone paid a bunch of money for that ad. And -- it had a big, flagrant, ugly typo right at the top of it. In large print. Right there. Took me 2 seconds to notice. Are people really so catatonic that they can't even pay attention to what they're doing? I mean, isn't that someone's job?

I have considered dropping the Republic but I don't know of another source to keep me informed on local issues, as well as sports articles. I completely ignore their national and world reporting (such as it is, squeezing a couple articles a day in between Dillard's ads) and read the NY Times and occasionally WSJ for that. The Republic has got to be the worst major metropolitan daily newspaper in the US.

Yablonowitz
08-17-2007, 09:50 AM
The growth in typos in newspapers is a direct result of the merging of copyediting with layout/design. Those used to be two separate functions with a newspaper, now they are one. And the money folks are mainly interested in how pretty and appealing to the eye the paper looks. Therefore, the people who get hired as copyeditors are MUCH more interested in layout/design and spend little, if any, time on editing content. Also, most are not very well trained in basic grammar and style. News editors have 10x the amount of stuff on their plate that is unrelated to news than ever before and will focus on the facts of the article and quickly pass it on to the copyeditors.

In sports departments, this is even worse and there is far less quality control. I spent a year as a reporter in Ottumwa, Iowa. They had a community college there that had a great basketball team which was often a major area of coverage. This was also a very white town and the ball players represented most of the black people in the town. So, on the team there was a player with the last name of Black. One day it was revealed that the college had just signed another player with the last name of Black. You want to know what the headline read the next day on the paper? (The college's name was Indian Hills).

Ok, shameless plug time...

If anyone is going to the D-Backs vs. Cubs game this Saturday, come to Cooperstown before and after the game. My band, 10 Downing St, is playing. Going to be a blast, but a killer of a night for me. I'll end up singing about 55 songs.

Game starts at 6:40, so we are going to start our first set at 5. The remaining sets should start after the game, so about 9-9:30.

I'mn't planning on going to the Diamondbacks game but I'm gonna look into making it to Cooperstown anyway.

I'm sure there have been many generations of batman pills, and I have a freaking lousy memory, so I don't remember if I liked them or not. I have had some pretty good and really weak pills this past summer though. Also, those pills tend to fuck with my memory to begin with. I guess I should write that shit down before I take them. :)

I really really don't think I'll be taking any for a long long time though.

After all our talk of Bjork (not) playing the Orpheum Theatre it turns out that Regina Spektor IS playing the Orpheum Theatre. Sunday, November 4.

Tickets are supposed to go on sale tomorrow morning at 10 am at LiveNation.com. Ticketmaster.com lists the price as $30 which is WAY more than I expected.

I'm getting the impression that this'll be a GA deal in which case there's no reason to rush on tickets because at that price this thing is not going to sell out.

Anyone else thinking of going?

I recieved a postcard the other day from Phoenix. I believe it came from mountmccabe, but it is completely illegible and so I can't be sure.

As best I can decipher, it says:

Hi. Thought you might like these guys. Also I want J[squiggle] info I k[squiggle] last [squiggle]. And Sgt. Fogely to sand. Ok, bye.

R I A

Please translate.

(Also thank you for the postcard).

Your copying of the first two sentences are correct. After that that doesn't sound quite right but who knows.

The "R I A" part is probably my signature. I've had the "Jo" part of my first name in my signature read as an "R" many a time. What you read as "I A" is probably actually my last name.

Not that my last name is "I A" or anything.

If you're not down with the four hour wait, check out Cibo downtown. Great gourmet type pizza (the pizza maker is from Tuscany) and they have these killer Nutella crepes for dessert. Great wine selection too.

EDIT: Not that I have any particular reason to expect either this time around. Just sayin'.

Also: Cool. Good to hear.

They did a polka version of "White Riot" when I saw them.

Skinheads, Tom. SkinHEADS. Get it straight.

Also, I may be at the CVB/BTS show.

Also, John, should I go see Vanderslice at Plush on Sunday? That seems like a good fit.

I love Plush. I'd go to almost any show there were it not 126 miles away.

Vanderslice is a fun show. I've only seen him once and it was nice. He played around. A lot. A whole lot. A whole fucking lot. He's actually touring behind a recently released album this time so maybe he'll be more on the ball with regards to performing music.

And the Bowerbirds are opening! That's what'd've drawn me to the show at Modified tomorrow. I have a conflict so I can't go, though.

Rick is working the door at Plush now (part time).

Also, yea you're right about the 22nd...I don't know what I was thinking. Maybe we should pick something in early December or something along those lines-kinda like a Phoenix Coachella holiday gathering.

The Rentals killed it last night. Only about 150 showed up, and I swear 100 were from Phoenix. I love Flagstaff, but gawddam we have an awful music scene.

Goldenboy played first. I had never heard them before, and I thought they were fantastic, but they were a lousy warm-up act. Really mellow, with lots of dead space between songs. The audience was very polite and applauded and cheered each song. But they did it sitting down...which at The Orpheum means they are 30 feet from the stage, and the band can't really see anybody. (It used to be a movie theater, and they just took out the first 10 rows or so.) Finally, Sara from the Rentals came out and stood right in front of the stage which broke the ice. I was in the back with a Guinness, and you can't bring alcohol on the floor, so I finished it and went down front. They wound up with maybe 20 people in front of the stage.

As soon as they finished, everyone else sitting down rushed up to the stage. Who the heck are Copeland? At least half the "crowd" seemed to be there specifically to see them. The guy's got a great voice, but other than that, I didn't see what the big deal was. To be fair, they said half the band was missing- it was just 2 acoustic guitars and a violin, so it probably wasn't representative of their normal show.

After Copeland, about 20 people left, and almost everyone else sat down. What the hell? I just strolled up and leaned on the stage. Talk about an intimate show! A lot got back up when The Rentals started, but there were still fewer than 100 people dancing- luckily most of them were really enthusiastic. At one point, I looked to my right, and the drummer for Goldenboy was right against the stage rockin' out...he probably usually has to hang in the back.

Here's some crappy camera-phone pix.

I just missed the point at the camera on that last one.

I normally never collect autographs...just seems stupid. But "Seven More Minutes" is one of my all-time favorite CDs, so I slipped the cover in my pocket before I left the house just in case. ("Pinkerton" is even higher on my list, but I didn't want to be insulting, even though they played a Weezer B-side.) By the end, I had chickened out...I always see people hanging around for an autograph, and they look so pathetic.

BUT, I stopped at the merch table on my way out to buy a Goldenboy CD. As I'm walking out, Matt walks up and takes a seat on the table. No one is paying any attention to him...the man played on Pinkerton, people! He's got a Sharpie in one hand, and is sticking his other out to shake.

I don't actually have that single. but I have several of their older stuff. in fact I just saw out in my garage the other day the cassette (yep, cassette) of Cuacha! that I bought off the band in 1987, before I'd ever even been to Arizona. I think when they had to change their name it kinda derailed them. like when Zeitgeist had to change their name to The Reivers.

If I didn't have to work,I would so go to the show tomorrow.Mesa Amphitheatre is just about the best place to see them,IMO.I saw Pearl Jam there when Ten first came out. It's a small venue, but works for arena rock type artists.I've also seen The Strokes and Spinal Tap there.

M Sparks
09-20-2007, 06:34 AM
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it...I haven't been there in about 11 years. It's a great venue, but generally anything I would want to see is either too small or too big for it. I usually wind up going to shows at the Marquee or one of the arenas/pavillions.

EDIT...You couldn't have seen Pearl Jam there when Ten FIRST came out. Because I saw them open for Nirvana and the Chili Peppers at ASU Activity Center when Ten was brand new. (December '91?)

Did they really get that big that fast to play Mesa Amp shortly thereafter? I remember no one seemed to know who they were- I had seen the "Alive" video maybe a few days before. We missed most of their set anyways, because security was so bad, there was still like 3000 people in line when the show started.
