they played the Dodge on the GBMS tour. Mesa after Elephant.

Yeah. I was not clear but I was wondering if there was another Dodge show; turns out the answer is no.

They also played Mesa Summer 2002 (after White Blood Cells), opening for Garbage.

OK, I did some more research, and you're three-quarters right. It had been in the works since at least 1997, and got a final approval in early 2001.

However, 3 weeks after Sept 11th, 2001, the schedule for the project was "accelerated" by 2 years. (Of course now, it's running 2 years behind.) That's a direct response to panic perpetuated by the government. There was never any sort of threat against the Hoover Dam, and if there was, building a bridge 4-8 years from now wouldn't have helped.

That was my mistake, I never heard about the bypass until October 2001. I went to Vegas that month, and this was when they REALLY had it locked down on the dam- like everyone had to be interviewed. And then I read about the bypass in the local paper the next day, so I assumed it was a direct relation.

At that time, I began taking the longer route, rather than mess with the backup at the security checkpoints.

OK, first of all, you actually avoid Boulder on that route which is a bonus, but driving through Searchlight negates that.

Forget the second part. I plan to avoid the bypass, because I have vertigo. It's uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. To me, that's worth an extra 15 minutes on the road. That's my choice. If there was no choice, or if the alternative was 90 minutes out of the way, then I would suck it up and take the bypass. It's not like I'm telling anyone else they should go that way. Why the fuck would you have a problem with that? Ooohhh...I have a balance problem, runs in the family...guess you're better than me because you don't, you sure got me there.

On the other hand, the government forces 300,000 trucks a year to make the same detour because they're scared of imaginary terrorists. But I'm the asshole because I get dizzy. Whatever.

You sound out of wind and a little bummed now, which was not my intention. I like how you pointed out that there are also no diesels on this route, which is two lane each directions. Who cares anyway.

So, i'm trying to follow the new sherriff Joe bullshit. I understand he was doing all those illegal racial profliling sweeps in guadalupe and am I correct that he no longer wants to provide the town with law enforcement now? He got some people to agree to push up the end of the contract to like 60 days from yesterday? Someone educate me here because I have read 2 news stories and i'm confused.

TomAz
09-18-2008, 09:15 AM
County has a right to cancel the contract with due notice which I think is 180 days, not 60.

When Arpaio led his gestapo sweeps in Guadalupe the mayor of that town actually had the balls to call him out on it. And we know how much Arpaio likes being criticized in the press.

The town is so small & poor that they contract with the county for law enforcement rather than build their own police force. (have you been to Guadalupe? it is about half mexican and half indian, and entering town feels like crossing the border. It really is very poor).

Arpaio decided he wanted to terminate the contract since the mayor called him out in the press, and since he has the board of supervisors cowering in fear, he got it approved yesterday.

Thanks for the info Tom, so I was reading it right. Interesting, so is the county itself and the Sheriff's department still going to talke jusrisdiction over the area to continue to do illegal sweeps? Is that the plan for Joe, to have his cake and eat it too. Basically pick up illegals and let the town crumble?

I wonder if they will start a volunteer police force. I only live about a mile or so from there so I can join.

No offense, dude, but if you're going to consider joining a police force, even if it is just as a volunteer, you should probably cut back on smoking weed, if not eliminating that from your routine entirely. Regardless of whether you feel it should be legal or not, it isn't right now and I've always felt that a police officer who knowingly commits illegal acts is compromising the integrity of his position. I'm not that familiar with volunteer police forces, their responsibilities and authorities and what-not, so perhaps I'm talking out of line here, but you even acknowledged earlier this week that your weed smoking has negatively affected your memory. If you want to serve as a volunteer policeman, hey, good on ya. But if you want to do it properly and truly be an asset to the community, it might be wise to modify some of your practices. Just sayin'.

*lol* thanks for the advice. However, it's a regular practice of police officers where I am from to take your weed and smoke it. :)

For the record I have no intention of becoming a "proper" police officer though I would argue that I can still be an asset to a community that doesn't have a police officer. I don't know how yet since I don't own a gun or anything but I can probably have a lot of conflicts simply hugged out.

I do in fact know what a community turns into when all law enforcement abandons hope. Read up on the Robert Taylor homes in Chicago. Sad story. Set up to fail.

Also, more important than the weed smoking and the lack of a weapon would be the shape I am in. I don't think I can walk a block let alone run one. I've been putting off a lot of things lately, getting into shape is one of them. :)

Wow, just $20. Let's see how things go for me at the Career Fair today. (Just about on my way out the door for that.)

What if CareerBuilder.com put on a Career Fair and nobody came? And by nobody, I don't mean people looking for a place to work, but rather employers.

What a gigantic waste of time that was. There were precisely 19 different companies represented, and they were all crammed into two rows despite having an entire conference hall available to them. Thus, traffic going from one company to the other was extremely congested, especially with the slowpokes in wheelchairs and the mothers carting their kids around in strollers. And of those 19 different companies, not all of them were even hiring. For instance, DeVry and Kaplan Universities were simply there to espouse the merits of attending their respective schools and obtaining a bachelor's degree from them.
Then there was the US Army and the Phoenix Police Department. If there was an administrative position I could've gotten with the PPD, I wouldn't have minded talking with them, but they were specifically looking for cops.
I had applied with American Express via their website the other day for an Executive Assistant position and hoped to be able to follow up with someone about my application. Their booth was one of the busiest, and as I stood in line, I managed to overhear some of the conversations being had with their representatives. They were there simply to hire CSRs for their call center. That seemed to be the primary thing the companies in attendance had any interest in, staffing their call centers. That or outside sales reps.
The last company I got in line for was Safeway. There was an older gentleman in front of me inquiring about the kinds of positions they had available. He was told they were hiring for "all positions," and so naturally he asked about management positions. "Actually, we very rarely have any management positions open up, and for those, we do promote from within." That was when I decided I'd wasted enough time.
On my way out, I found the one booth that wasn't inundated with people clamoring to turn in their resumes. There was a modest, handwritten sign hanging behind the table. It read "Tow Truck Driver Training Academy." The guy manning the booth looked to be about as enthused to be there as a dog waiting to be neutered by his vet. I know exactly how you feel, man.

Somewhat Damaged
09-19-2008, 12:35 PM
Well, I finally applied there (at GoDaddy.com, that is). None of the jobs they had listed as being open are anything I would be interested in or capable of doing. I'm not a tech geek. I'm looking for either a managerial or administrative position, as that's what I've been doing for, like, 90% of my working life. The problem I seem to run into is that I'm overqualified for some of the admin assistant positions I apply to.
It just confounds me, some of the expectations of experience particular companies have. Like, I went into a Marriott by the house and the guy I spoke with was only interested in talking to me 'cause I told him I have some experience working in a hotel. That got him all excited and he noted that very few people who go in and apply have any hospitality experience. Here's the thing, though: I worked as a night auditor for Best Western back when I was 19. I picked up all the software and procedures within a few days of training. How fucking hard can it be? If you have customer service experience, and you know your way around a computer, you don't NEED hotel experience in order to perform the job well. Especially if, like me, you're going after an administrative position.
There's one temp agency whose ad I always see on jobing that's looking for admins and the starting pay is pretty good. I can't apply, though, 'cause it states loudly and proudly in the ad that construction experience is required. Ya think my dad having worked in construction since before I was born counts? Maybe I'm just demonstrating my own myopia about the realities of the majority of people looking for a job, but if you're as fucking smart as I am and have a history of excelling in whatever job you've held, it just gets annoying as all hell to have any struggle obtaining employment. It's like I just want to shake these people and tell them to wake the fuck up. You're doing yourself a disservice not hiring me!

Just slightly grandiose today.

Send your resume to the employment agency anyway, this job might be for a construction job but the next one might not be and then you will already have sent them your resume. And honestly admin work is admin work, I was the admin for a general contractor for a long time before I became a Project Coordinator and the only thing different is you need to know some construction terms, having worked in accounting prior to that I didn't know the terms much myself even though I had been in the industry for years. So I bought a Construction Dictionary (yes they do sell them). And that was all I needed. There are several good agencies here in Phoenix, Every job I have had in the 12 years I have been in the valley I got through an agency.

we just built the corporate offices for Arizona State Credit Union up on 27th Ave and Pinnacle Peak, they had doctor offices, gym, nap rooms, full kitchen, and that was the normal work areas, then the VP suites and private bathrooms, fridges in their offices that were stocked with wine and beer. No wonder banks are going under if they are livin large like that. I kept trying to get them to hire me but I don't own a business suit and don't quite fit into the banking world, I prefer my jeans and polo shirt.

I think GoDaddy is always hiring, and they hire outside people sometimes for management and database admin positions. Not sure what you're looking for exactly.

Customer Service Representatives.

You get to field questions like "Are we online right now???" & "How do I know when I am on the interweb?"

All the while these people are trying to build their own website for the first time with MS Paint.

Sure, but if you're ambitious you can move right out of sales and into something else after a few months. They don't have "time in title" requirements there (meaning you have to stay at one position for a pre-determined amount of time).

You could try Americorps. It's a domestic Peace Corps. You get placed in a nonprofit for a year and get anywhere between $8000-$15000 stipend for your term. After the year, you also receive an educational award a little less than $5000 to pay for student loans or future school tuition. We've got 2 working for us at our nonprofit. A lot of times after your term is over the nonprofit offers the Americorps member a paid position.

And you qualify for the max amount you can receive in food stamps, and get full healthcare.

With food stamps, you just get a card similar to a debit card and a pin number. You use the self checkout at the grocery and no one even knows, so there's no stigma. Our last Americorps member never used his full amount in food stamps for the month so I'd give him cash and go use his EFT card to buy groceries. This was a good deal for him since he could use the cash.

No beck for me. I'll be at MMJ. Saw Calexico tonight in Tucson and all I can say is wowowowowow. Sooo good. Arizonans have a world renowned band to be proud of and no, it's not Jimmy Eat World (even though Jim Adkins did open the show tonight) or Linkin Park.

4 violinists, 3 mariachi's, 4 horn players. accordion, stand up bass, maracas, keyboard and more guitars. Joey Burns words and John's drum beats. That 2 + hours goes by way to fast.

It's such a breath of fresh air to see musicians who have no prerecorded material and so much talent.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, that amount of money is nowhere near enough compensation for my bills (even if I got food stamps) and would be less than what I was making 6 years ago. I'm not going to accept a cut in salary that dramatic.
But yeah, the Americorps program is a really good idea for someone no older than their early 20s. I had a friend who went through the program for 2 years and is now set up in a pretty nice job assignment. He's still making, like, $8,000 less than I was at my last job, though. I know I'm going to have to take some sort of pay cut, but I won't accept anything more than $4,000, and even that's simply if I'm completely desperate. He released the stellar Prince, Portishead, Waters and many other recordings from 2008 that were top notch.

I would greatly appreciate a link to the Portishead D/L if it is still available... THX!

Haha Alex Gardner got the 2008 Bootleg thread deleted and then locked about maybe three months ago. Ppl were pissed.

You can still find the recordings but these are torrents, not just some link to a download. Most people wont have a problem downloading a torrent, some people are not into it and just give up on trying to do it.

The Boys Noize .flac from Kingsblend is still on of my favs, but Sin's Kraftwerk set is really good, his Portishead recordings are awesome too.

OK Pirate watch out for me too I will have all the RJD2 flyers and anyone who wants a one sided RJD2 poster can have one.

BTW why have a meetup when I am going to Tucson!!!

Thoughts on the show:
That...was...incredible. I'm not a person usually prone to hyperbole but tonights show was simply amazing. I was first row, right in front of Jim's mike. To hear such great old stuff (Phone Went West, Cobra) mixed in with some amazing versions of new(ish) songs (Wordless Chorus and Gideon gave me chills), tonight was magical. I don't know how nor think that Sigur Ros will be able to top this

At Treasure Island, they had "Shake a Fist" into "And I Was a Boy From School" as their opening salvo, which was terrific.
