You know you live in Phoenix when you would rather starve then go out in the heat, get in your very hot car and burn your ass on the seat and your hands on the steering wheel to get food for lunch.

Leaving work at 6 helps me with this issue. And those windshield cover things. My fucking detachable radio is red hot if I leave it in the car though. I guess I should take the damn thing with me since that's the whole point of having an expensive, detachable radio face--take it with you so no one steals it or whatever.

I decided since I didn't want to go outside to get lunch and nothing in the vending machine was looking appetizing that I would eat a left over bagel from this mornings meeting but the only cream cheese they had was the smoked salmon schmear. Since I love Bagels and Lox I thought I would give it a shot. For the record it is nothing like Lox, it is fucking nasty. Now I want to desperately go home and brush my teeth. ICK

You know, you could bring your lunch with you so you neither starve nor have to venture out into the heat. And you'll save quite a bit of money that way, too, since you won't be spending $5+ every day for lunch.

Someone stole my applesauce cup recently. WTF?? an applesauce cup?? Also, several years ago I bought a full pizza-size cheese crisp (not quesadilla, this has cheese on TOP). and I couldn't finish it all so I put it in my work fridge for the next day. Someone took a couple pieces of it and left the rest. That's so gross.

We had a meeting and they brought in the box lunches with a sandwich, cookie and pasta salad. I ate half the sandwich and pasta salad and left the rest in the fridge for the next day. I went to go get it and someone ate the half sandwich and half the cookie and put the other half of a cookie in the box and back in the fridge. I was pissed, but seriously who eats half eaten food, I can understand a closed up frozen meal to an extent, but half eaten food? I could have sneezed on it or licked it or something. gross.

I've never done that shit at work but my one experiment in living with other people didn't go so well. I was the only one in the apartment with a job -- everyone else had trust funds or inheritances to live off of. And they left the place an absolute mess ALL THE FUCKING TIME. I like washing my dishes immediately after I'm done eating and every week or so, I would yell at them to clean the sink. They washed their own dishes so infrequently that they would eventually be stacked so high that I couldn't even sneak a plate under the faucet to rinse it. And so in time, I started devising ways of getting back at them, and one of my schemes involved eating their snacks.
One time, I mistakenly thought Roommate A had purchased a cake. Being that he had been home all week and the cake was still largely uneaten after several days, I decided he must not have really wanted it and alleviated him of the need to eat about 80% of it over a couple days' period of time. It turned out, however, that Roommate B had actually bought the cake and he had been out of town that whole week, hence why the cake had barely been touched. He was so fucking pissed when he got back and saw one measly slice of cake left. He complained to me about it, probably knowing I was the culprit, saying how fucked it was that he only got to have 2 pieces. I played dumb and agreed that it was indeed fucked. If he had been less of a slob about keeping the house looking respectable, I would've felt worse about it.

yeah, we went to the medical tent. they weren't sure if it was broken or not. we wanted them to just leave us in the beer garden by the mainstage so we could wait for portishead, but everything happened so fast she was on a stretcher before we knew it. i probably could have stayed, but without knowing what had happened, i felt i should be there with my friend.

I have not made it to mexico, but it is on my list. But we have done the Vegas and San Diego thing quite often. And recently my girlfriend and I have been doing Redondo once every few months. We stay off the beach in one of the cheaper hotels since we don't spend much time in the room anyway. It is a pretty sweet vacation for around $200 each between gas and lodging. Can't beat that.

I would have to say that Phoenix has it's problems too. When it comes to the art scene in Phoenix everyone thinks they are on cutting edge, but really they need to drop a hit of acid and go to Coachella. Everyone also wants to incorporate Arizona into every project to come out of Arizona, which will always be its demise.

People in Arizona are also notorious for making musicians not want to come back to Arizona, because the promoters do a bad job promoting a show that should be selling itself out, and being disrespected by venues and staff.

Other than that I love not having California prices for a place to live, I love the closeness of LA, SD, LV.

and we got a bit of rain last night. it was beautiful :)

the thing that sucks about any scene in arizona too is no one wants to pay for anything. everyone wants to be on a list or get comped or they don't show up. promotion has sucked balls for a lot of quality acts, i don't get it either.

locachica73

I would also like to see the downtown scene in Phoenix turned around. I hate that to go dancing I have to go to some big snobby club with a dress code in Scottsdale or I have to go hang out with youngins in Tempe. I am curious to see if once they build up the CityBlock projects that are going in downtown if that will liven up the area and make it more like a downtown that you find in any other big city.

downtown has had a few fun things going on, like next door. i'm going to be sad when the bikini lounge changes ownership. i will be happy when the light rail is finished cause i live near the sycamore creek station in mesa. also, all that construction has made it difficult to do anything downtown. i miss when they'd do spliff at monroes, that place is cool too.

Unfortunately the construction will be going on for awhile. RED Development is revitalizing several city blocks, putting in condos, apartments, retail, hospitality and office space, and even redoing several of the parking garages down there. It will be going on for years. I do like hitting Seamus McAffrys (sp?) down there and I like Next Door when I can get people to go with me. Most of my friends aren't into that kind of music. But I am hoping to drag my sis down there one of these nights.

Just so i'm not being misunderstood. I find Phoenix itself to be a clutureless souless desert wasteland that fails to embrace it's native american and latino culture and instead breeds a hatred towards both.

Word. That's on the way home woot!

the thing that sucks about any scene in arizona too is no one wants to pay for anything. everyone wants to be on a list or get comped or they don't show up. promotion has sucked balls for a lot of quality acts, i don't get it either.

People here just don't care. Not all of them but almost all of them. Tempe was on the verge of greatness and has the ingredients with being so close to ASU but whatever they are doing they are doing all wrong, somehow Tucson which is way out of the way seems to know how to embrace it's college culture, old historic venues and the Rialto always gets good acts. I don't get it. I'll say it again. Phoenix is a soulless place that lacks culture, taste in music and art. lol <beating the dead horse>

Even when I was 30 and use to go to Have A Nice Day Cafe down there, I always felt old and dancing with guys I always wanted to check their ID's. Although happy hours at Rula Bula are always a good time. Just not much into late night drinking down there.

Well I want to get a whole shoulder upper arm piece done but won't have the money for that right now. So I am thinking I might just get it started. The focus of it is going to be 3 honu turtles (for me and my 2 kids) surrounded by hibiscus (sp?) flowers and some other stuff. I might just get the 3 turtles to start and then next time I am in hawaii get it finished. I like to get tattooed whenever I go on vacation, just something special to remind me of the good times I had.

I used to go up to Tempe every other weekend or so, when I moved here 3 years ago. Mostly for shows, but I met a few people and got to see the campus scene a little. Haven't been in a while.

fyi, it's raining in "pee break between san diego and phoenix" right now, getting us closer to our 2 in/yr. And by raining I mean the light colored sidewalks are temporarily freckled. Like the ants are reenacting the video to Billy Jean.

If Phoenix gets a hard enough rain it'll show up in yuma as a steady sprinkle, but it's rare we see a nice storm. Maybe twice a year as a 30 minute downpour. We haven't had recent stuff like that, so yeah, sprinkles. I work 20 miles north of yuma and it somehow gets so much more in quantity.

Just so i'm not being misunderstood. I find Phoenix itself to be a clutureless souless desert wasteland that fails to embrace it's native american and latino culture and instead breeds a hatred towards both.

I dont go this deep with the knife because I have to deal and thrive off of the people that we are talking about. I spend most of my time talking the way fax was talking in the privacy of my own home, or on the Coachella board. If I do it in public its like pissing on my own living room floor.

08-06-2008, 10:54 PM
I would have to say that Phoenix has it's problems too. When it comes to the art scene in Phoenix everyone thinks they are on cutting edge, but really they need to drop a hit of acid and go to Coachella. Everyone also wants to incorporate Arizona into every project to come out of Arizona, which will always be its demise.

People in Arizona are also notorious for making musicians not want to come back to Arizona, because the promoters do a bad job promoting a show that should be selling itself out, and being disrespected by venues and staff.

Agree with a lot of this. Many Arizona artists (non-musical) are very insulated and scared to push the envelope. I think a lot of them incorporate the region in their work because they feel the need to stand out but sadly, AZ isn't terribly interesting nor widely known enough for that to help their work.

IMO, promoters take the lion's share of blame for so many of these under-attended shows. It seems like promoting now simply consists of cheap fliers at the regular bars/music stores/venues and Myspace bulletins. Remember when Hot Pink gave out buttons? What about when that one band (Complainiacs? fuzzy memories) would play from the back of a truck that cruised up and down the Artwalk each First Friday? Hell, Digital Summer plastered their stickers ALL OVER the valley and wound up on the front page of the New Times.

The venues around here need to sack the fuck up and invest in hometown musicians instead of treating them as though they're doing them a favor by letting them play at their spots. So many bitches worried about whether the sound's too loud or whether someone shows up without a collared shirt. Gimme a fucking break.

If I do it in public its like pissing on my own living room floor.

Self-censorship sucks. You a bartender or promoter or something?

I would also like to see the downtown scene in Phoenix turned around. I hate that to go dancing I have to go to some big snobby club with a dress code in Scottsdale or I have to go hang out with youngins in Tempe.

downtown has had a few fun things going on, like next door. i'm going to be sad when the bikini lounge changes ownership... i miss when they'd do spliff at monroes, that place is cool too.

I mourn the loss of downtown as much as anyone but I'm also interested in seeing what springs up in it's place. At first, I was so not thrilled about ASU moving in but I eventually came around and realized youthful energy is exactly what we need if downtown is gonna survive.

Next Door is a perfect example of the insulated & safe bubble people cling to. The owner scared away a bunch of diverse music promoters leaving it with nothing but DnB, dubstep and the occasional electrohouse or breaks night. And they still hardly ever let anyone inside the actual gallery space, preferring everyone stay outside near the bar in order to buy way overpriced drinks instead.

The Bikini has been for sale forever. I have a feeling the lady who owns it is somewhat particular about who she'd sell it to.

i agree 100% about next door. i guess i meant i like the venue. i hate that they constantly keep people out of the house though. and they were such bitches about the bathroom at fate. i swear they had a guard watching people. i heard they were building bathrooms on the next door side though so maybe it will get better. it's been a few months since i've been, but that's because they kept setting up the dj RIGHT NEXT TO the freaking entrance. how is anyone supposed to dance?! oh right, they don't want people to dance because they let people play entire sets of dubstep as well.

the first few times i went were awesome because the crowd was more diverse. i wish they'd do more with it too.

and i heard bikini was just selling "the name" or something. i was there friday, and someone was trying to tell me the situation, but it was so crowded and humid in there i ended up leaving. i like going to bikini on any night but first fridays. it's better when it still has the "dive" feel and i can overtake the jukebox :)

I tried getting a job with the Rialto last year, which was the first time I noticed that they were getting some really terrific artists. Last September they had a lineup that included Animal Collective, Arctic Monkeys, and New Pornographers. I wound up going to exactly ZERO shows, though, 'cause I couldn't afford to do any of them AND go to Muse and Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem.
This year, I am again going to miss out on pretty much every concert coming to town because I'm spending what I allocate for concerts on shows out of town, such as Radiohead (San Diego & Santa Barbara) and the Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco.
I had tickets to Hot Chip/Vampire Weekend but sold them to a friend when Jen convinced me we should hit up Treasure Island to see Goldfrapp instead. And that's disappointing to hear about CSS -- hope they don't cancel Treasure Island, too.

Ooh, hadn't heard about Ratatat. And it's on a Saturday, too, so I won't automatically have to miss it if I'm living in Phoenix by then. Looking forward to Okkervil River, though it sucks it's in the middle of the week. Have they announced any of the SoCo lineup yet? Last year's offering was kind of disappointing; good thing we can safely assume Girl Talk won't be there polluting the air. And you're forgetting a big one:

My issue with Weezer is mostly a crowd issue. I've liked them since the first album and saw them 4 times on that tour but now it's a bunch of 14-17 year olds texting and giggling through the show, at least that's been my experience. My sister and her husband do a huge party every year, it is one of my least favorite holidays. All the pressure of coming up with a good costume, and outdoing previous years. I always make my own and it has now become the ... oooh what will she come up with this time... type thing and I hate the pressure. My favorite holidays are St Pattys day and Cinco De Mayo. No pressure, just beer.

Exactly the reason why I don't care for those holidays. Actually, I'm getting pretty sick of Christmas now that you mention it. Halloween and Easter and three-day work holidays can stay, everything else can eat a bowl of dicks.

I'll check it out. I've actually found something to like about ALL of their albums, I just think they are pretty second rate if you remove Pinkerton. I still want to go see them, just for the heck of it.

I saw The Rentals last year and it was freakin amazing. I think losing Matt was probably a big blow to their live show at the very least, and really, they haven't released a truly great album since he left. But it could be a coincidence...there were a lot of other factors and changes in that 4 years or whatever it was.

This really sucks:

http://www.azcentral.com/pets/articles/2008/08/13/20080813kpnx-animalshelter.html

MCACC officials say they are without water today. Apparently, somebody stole the copper piping. They say the sinks don’t work, the bathrooms don’t work and the outside hoses don’t work.

Staff has no way to clean the dog kennels, and give the dogs and cats fresh water. First thing every morning, officials say kennel staff members clean and wash every dog and cat kennel. They have been unable to do so today. Having no water could be very bad for the shelter and all the animals involved.

Staff members say a water truck has been called in just in case, but the County is already working on fixing the problem to get water running back into the shelter

locachica73
08-13-2008, 09:49 AM
The copper theives are out of control, and the people who buy the obviously stolen copper from them should also be arrested. Maybe sherrif Joe will do something about this now that it is affecting the animals instead of just construction companies. But he is too busy out picking up illegal aliens.

So my friends are all twisting my arm to go to Vegas despite the fact that I have no money. They seem to think I would be fine there with $100. Next to nothing for gas, free lodging and grocery food and alcohol. I think I may take them up on it. I get paid Friday and I will check the finances, we are going over the holiday weekend in a couple weeks. Fuck this is gonna be tough. I wish my roommate would find a job soon, he's having a tough time and me paying all the bills and rent is tough enough. I think I might be able to pull it off though on the cheap and somehow mangaging to make it to the house of blues to see Roger Clyne and Toad the Wet Sprocket the following night. We shall see. I've never gone to vegas and not gambled that's why this is so difficult.

locachica73

My problem is I normally go to Vegas with no less than $500 or so. I like to gamble. I play cards at tables, I play in the poker room, I play slots, I just love to drink, smoke and gamble. IN the midst of it hanging out with a couple dozen friends, going to dinner and drinking, it's just so much fun. Amy, what were your Radiohead highlights from each night?
Well, let me see. The Gloaming live was very creepy and exciting live--they have these wicked, bright green lights on their light set-up. I had just finished re-reading Stephen King's The Tommyknockers before the show, and the bright green light reminded me of the alien green light that shines from the possessed people's eyes in the story (and I was on acid, so that enhanced the effect). Also, RH played The Pyramid Song BOTH NIGHTS, and I was hoping to hear it at least once. Thom's voice and piano were so smooth and beautiful that on Friday tears were streaming down my face that entire song. I also cried during Cymbal Rush, another Thom voice/piano song which translated very well live.

After my weekend was over, I kept hearing Arpeggi/Weird Fishes and Exit Music (for a Film) in my head, so those must have made an impression on me as well. Fucking Planet Telex was rocking on Saturday (colored lights) and Paranoid Android and Just also rocked my socks off on Friday (colored lights on Paranoid Android). Those Bends and OK Computer songs just clicked in my head like a light switch or a brilliant idea--they sounded soooo perfect. I couldn't really see the band on the stage either night from where I was standing, so I can't give you details on band member antics, but the LIGHTS WERE AWESOME. And it's so nice since not everyone can get up close. I hope you have a great time watching them in Cali.

The cost difference between GA and VIP is = to the gas cost there and back. I haven't been this broke in my life. doing vegas cheap can be tough, i understand. one time me and two friends were going to play bingo at the fort, and we decided if any of us won, we'd take the winnings and go to vegas the next night. well, we ended up winning $300 in the first game. this was in like 2004.

we stayed near nellis air force base and took the bus to the strip. then we bought 3 yards of daquiris and just walked around with that. we didn't gamble. luckily we were cheap dates too and didn't require anymore alcohol. it was a fun, spur of the moment thing, but it did kinda suck having to stay far from the strip and take the bus and not be able to eat at any of the nice restaurants.

I meant to expand upon that but my connection went all squirrelly. Once First Friday got really popular and a little overcrowded they added Third Friday. Now some galleries (Modified Arts, for example) have their openings Third Fridays. It is less crowded, less wild. And since most people don't go to these venues other than for First Friday it doesn't matter that what they're seeing on First Friday has been there for a couple weeks; it's still new to them.

I fully expect to be the belle of the ball, what with your hubbub and excitement over being in my presence and all. If I'm too busy to sign an autograph, don't take it personal, sweetie.

Wow, you got to talk to THE Phil Villareal.

Whenever I'm on the fence as to whether to see a movie or not, I look him up on Rotten Tomatoes and do the opposite. Unless it's something that EVERYONE loves or EVERYONE hates, I almost always disagree with him.

It is fine Fax, if you had not taken any of these then ppl like me who wanted to go but couldnt would never know how it went down. You guys dont seem bored but it seems a little shy looking.

I usually try and bring a bunch of weed and try and bring ppl down to my own stoned to the bone level, then my jokes seem to come out faster and be more witty. Its my ice breaker.
