i always find it funny when buying toilet paper and others are doing the same since we all know what you will be using it for. one time i saw a chick buying the generic cheap stuff and asked if she really wiped her ass with that.

I think I might be in the minority here, but for me, the bathroom is FOR all those personal grooming activities like teeth brushing, makeup applying, and hair brushing, in addition to using the toilet. I think it's inappropriate to apply makeup, brush your hair, or otherwise take care of personal matters in a shared, public office space. It's fine for folks who have private offices with doors that can be shut, but if you're in a communal office space, I'd much rather have people go to the bathroom to do those sorts of things.

I feel the same way, but also get frustrated with people who use the sink area for excessively long times, especially when people are waiting to wash their hands. I brush teeth at work, but there are only 3 or 4 women on my floor so I'm not exactly blocking others' access to the facilities.

I make toilet kits for festivals (I think loca does too??) - it's really the only reason I carry a bag in. Toilet paper, seat covers, wet wipes (baby wipe kind AND the alcohol germ killing kind) and purel. I leave the port-a-potties cleaner than when I went in.

What do you use? I've used Dove in the past and they work really well in terms of not leaving one's skin dry.

POTTY PACKS!!! Yep, sanitizer, seat covers, ass wipes, all bought in the travel section, one for each day.

I can't remember the name of the face wipes I use, not dove though because I am allergic to thier products. It is one that target carries in thier travel pack section. I will look when I get home, I think I still have some left over.

I just use Cottonelle brand wipes on my face. I would think most unscented baby wipes would be fine on your skin -- you would not use really alcohol-heavy wipes on a baby's bum, would you? I also take a handful of the literal alcohol+ wipes for hand cleaning.

No, I have even tried doing the flush to distract myself... no luck. my bladder and other parts know the difference.
Loca, the next time you have to deal with your landlord, you need to get in the same mindset as your bladder. Be defiant! Get pissy. Better to be pissed off than pissed on, you know!

oh, we always make sure we can afford the wipes, too.
I'm sure with 2 small children and you, babywipes would be a necessity. BTW, when you asked that girl about her toilet paper choice, did she look at you and say, "For a douchebag, shouldn't you be buying Massengil instead?" Just curious.

I will say one thing after reading the last page or two here... None of you have anything to whine about in regards to sharing restrooms, until you've experienced sharing them with 2200 bitches in the same place... I can't begin to tell you how miserable the first few months were trying to adapt to the fact that my "litterbox time" was no longer private! Even when I was finally able to move up to sharing a room with only one person and one toilet, the damn thing was right there, 3 ft from our beds! Luckily, I usually ended up with "roommates" that shared the same respect and modesty I had in allowing that private time and keeping things clean. Speaking of clean, I used to think women had a natural tendency to want to keep the bathroom and shower area in order, but you wouldn't have thought that there. I usually arranged my schedule so I could be one of the first to use the showers. Otherwise, if you waited too long, not only was the water cold, but the showers were...nevermind...:nono Sounds funny, but if there was one thing I missed as much as my freedom for those 2 1/2 years...it was my own "litterbox" and shower/tub!

locachica73

reason #1,234 not to go to jail would be the fact that I would eventually explode from not being able to piss or shit. Add that to the no sex thing and I will remain a good girl (or a bad girl who doesn't get caught). :)

It's difficult enough when Nick is over for an entire weekend and I sneak into the second restroom if I think he is asleep enough and won't recognize I am gone.

chiapet
02-08-2010, 01:20 PM
It's certainly nothing compared to prison, but I don't think I had much modesty left after 6 years of public school gym class (showers forced, and no curtains or stalls), and several years of college dorms.

You will think I'm completely nuts if I tell you my house, growing up, had one bathroom that did not have a lock and one bathroom that did not have a DOOR nor a shower curtain/door. If I was feeling modest, I'd pin a towel across the doorway. It was right at the top of our stairs too in view/earshot of everyone.

locachica73
02-08-2010, 01:26 PM
my master bathroom has no door, i finally got to the point of being able to pee in there if nick is there.

I got kicked out of gym class about a month in on my freshman year due to asthma and passing out in class. So I never got past my modesty thing. I don't even like to change clothes in front of my true girlfriends who I talk about anything with. My modesty doesn't carry over into what I am willing to talk about, only into seeing me naked or hearing my bodily functions.

no, we have the adult wipes that are toilet friendly. baby wipes are no good for that, don't want to f up the plumbing, plus they don't disintegrate so the sewage plant then has to deal with them.

This is the strangest thing I have read in the 226 pages of this thread.

No, it's not. That whole discussion was about public restrooms. And it's quite common for women to not be comfortable with other women hearing what they're doing while in the toilet stall, as natural and necessary as those functions may be. Seriously, if that was the strangest thing you've read here, you haven't been paying close attention.

Courtney
02-08-2010, 02:27 PM
Yes, it is fairly common for women to be shy about using the toilet where other people can hear. Luckily(?), my college freshman and sophomore year dorm had unisex bathrooms with only flimsy shower curtains separating the stalls, so I got over any issues had then, as a matter of bladder survival.

And for the record, I do agree with Audra that doing something super intensive in a work bathroom that's more than just a touch-up, like using a curling iron or tweezers or clipping toenails, is not only inconsiderate but also totally tacky. That sort of stuff should be saved for home.

Hey, a while back, there was a discussion about bras, someone has a friend who recommended the bra from that place with the "bounce-o-meter". It turned out to be a good recommendation.

I am wondering if that friend would also have recommendation for bras for everyday wear. (Since I also can't just go into a store to buy something, have to order online).

Breyer's Coffee ice cream. Possibly the best frozen dessert known to man. Infinitely superior to all other forms of coffee ice cream and quite possibly all other ice creams period if you're a real purist about it and like your ice cream without a bunch of crap in it.

Breyer's is way underappreciated. Actually I'm not even sure if it exists on the west coast, I don't think I ever bought it there.

I suspect your bias is due to your geography, but I have the same leaning. It's what I grew up eating. The only reason I do not buy it is because I can never find small containers here - it takes me many months to go through a half-gallon of ice cream and it just ends up becoming freezer burnt. Plus my freezer is not big enough to hold much, and I like variety. That's why there is so much ice cream in my freezer. They're all different ones, hehehe.

Breyer's strawberry and vanilla bean are probably my favorite ice creams, but Haagen-Dazs vanilla bean is pretty great too.

Current ice cream fixation is raspberry white chocolate swirl or some such nonsense. It is so rich that I can barely eat it. Which is a good thing, I think. I have a few spoonfuls and then am done.

Ladies, add me to the list with thinning hair. Been growing my hair out for almost two years. My plan was to cut it very, very short - which I prefer - after I lost weight. So I lost the weight. But I noticed afterward that I was shedding lots of hair(!). At first I thought I was just noticing it more because my hair was a lot longer than usual. But no. My part is wider and you can definitely see my scalp in places at my hairline.

I never knew that losing weight can cause your follicles to go into shutdown mode. Bleh. I've been maintaining the weight loss for the last 4 months and I'm noticing little short hairs growing at my hairline and poking up through the long hair on my scalp. And that's good. But it only appears to be about 1/3 to 1/2 of the hair I've lost. That's bad.

So I've jumped on the sulfate-free shampoo bandwagon. John Masters Organics. And I started taking hair vitamins. Here's hoping. Of course, it may not be the weight loss at all. If it's hormones (I'll find out at my annual), I think I may have to say goodbye to a thick head of hair.

I want it super short. I'm afraid if I do, you'll see thin spots. At least long hair disguises it. And if it were socially acceptable, I probably would shave it all off. Then I wouldn't have to worry at all.

See, I think thinning is much more noticeable with long hair than short. (Think old male hippies that won't give up the sad thin ponytail.) Depending on how you style it, short hair could disguise thin spots.

Thin hair runs in my mom's family. My grandma wears a wig because her hair is so thin. My aunt wears her all spiked up and crazy to hide the bald spots. My mom has very thin, brittle hair. My uncle is bald (shaves it because his hair is so thin)...

And I'm the only female cousin who got it. FML. My sister and cousins have beautiful, thick hair. Ugh.

I have a friend who's a hair dresser. She suggested Nioxin to me, but I wanted to try the natural route first to see what happens. I'll ask her if she thinks there's enough there to do what I want with it.

And thinning hair was definitely never on my list of Things to Consider When You Get Older.

HTD, i'd recommend trying this stuff out. don't let the "men" labeling deter you. even though i'm lucky enough to (still) have all my hairs, i'm at the age when i need to think about it. this stuff has definitely slowed down the amount of hairs that were collecting on the shower drain.

I lose a disgusting amount of hair. Like, I find gobs of hair anywhere I am for a length of time -- couch, desk, bathroom. TONS of hair in my washing machine filter. I have to get my tub drain snaked like once a year. If I dye my hair, I lose literally a couple of handfuls of hair. It kind of freaks me out, but...

My mom had a good point that in any normal situation, it's a percentage of your hair that is being cycled out, so if you have a ton of hair follicles, you're going to lose a lot more strands of hair than someone with less actual hairs.

Some people consider that a brush off, but I've given guys my email address before because I hate phones.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's a brush off, but there's usually a reason you got an email address instead of a phone number. Some of us just don't give phone numbers to strangers -- easier to ignore or change your email address than your phone number.

Turns out it wasnt a brush off at all. Just doesnt give the # out to strangers. I can dig it.

HTD, I'm sorry to hear that it's happening to you, too. It's so painful for me to shower because I don't want to see my hair on my hands instead of my head. I heard it's important to shower once a day if you have thinning hair because you want to keep your scalp clean and healthy so you don't suffocate any growing hair.. but it makes my heart heavy. Nothing seems to help. That shampoo that I mentioned earlier makes my hair look so dull and gross after a few days of using it.

I loved having long hair.. now I can't keep it longer than my armpit before the strands split and hair loss seems to increase. Sigh.

Barb, please don't be discouraged. I assume you have mandatory school health insurance at your college. You should be able to get a physical at the student health clinic at no or low cost to you, right? Make an appointment with the doctor/nurse practitioner. Don't be embarrassed or think this isn't something worthy of a visit. I intend to discuss this with my doctor at my upcoming annual (but in the meantime, nice organic shampoo and vitamins can't hurt). You just need to make sure the doctor gives you a nice, clean bill of health. That's the real priority. Hair thins as you age, but you are awfully young for this. And it's obviously causing you a great deal of distress, which doesn't help the situation either. See the doctor, hear what he/she has to say, and go on from there.

I think I mentioned before, Barb, that my (dermatologist) doctor recommended iron supplements every day for 6 months because it takes 6 months for your iron levels to build up, and iron deficiency can be a cause of hair loss. Sadly for me, I'm not sure if that helped. My doctor had me get off iron after 6 months and told me to start eating an iron-rich diet, but I don't really eat a whole lot of foods with iron in it. (argh). I think it's best to have a doctor monitoring your use of iron supplements, so be careful.

Hehe, thanks guys. I met him when I was visiting friends in Pittsburgh for the weekend in October. I basically picked him up at his own bar. I thought it was just going to be a one night stand, too. Haha! Here is what I wrote in my secret journal when I went home :):

He runs this bar in Pittsburgh that I went to. He plays the ukelele and electric violin and started this free music school next to his house! The thing that makes me swoon the most is that he is so humble and kind and that his awesome personality just emanates from his heart and smile. He doesn't try to put up a facade. He adores everyone around him and all his friends seem to love him wholeheartedly right back. I only hung out with him for one afternoon but his outlook on life made me reconsider mine a little. I know some more qualities I'll be looking for in guys now :)

I'm not saying he's perfect. I know I'm not in love with him. I just met him. I know I didn't affect him as much as he has affected me, either. I just felt that his aura is pure and loving.

Knowing that I can be happy for someone without wanting anything in return is relieving; I was getting worried that I was a frigid bitch who is too jaded and is suspicious of all men. Well, I think I still am. But maybe a little less now....

He is a real hottie ♥ _______ ♥ I hope I can talk to him again one day. But if I don't, that is alright, too.

Hehehe. So we kept talking and really clicked. We visited each other a few times (he's 4 hours away from me, which fucking sucks) and... I like him a lot now.

Long distance sucks though. And I'll be moving back to LA in about a year and a half. I'm just going with the flow. Whatever happens, happens :)

Same here. It's fine if I know I'll be standing around, but if I'm walking, forget it. I just feel a lot more confident in flat/low wedges knowing I can run if I want to and not teeter around everywhere. Which is funny cuz most girls say they feel most confident IN heels. Sadly, high heels for me = 3 inches. I can do a 5 inch wedge if the front of the shoe is raised 2 inches, but 3 for the arch. Stupid deformed feet of mine.

There are some heels that I keep trying to wear but it never gets better. I get that whole unable to straighten leg problem. I should take a course. I heard there are some vids on Youtube, lol (not that I've tried to uh, learn that way and failed.)

I pretty much think every pair of shoes you girls post is hideous. But that's good because I feel no temptation to buy.

Corinna, I used to wear 4" heels (higher if they had a platform) to work every single day. It started when I worked in a designer shoe store in college, and we were required to wear heels. It got to the point where wearing flats actually made my legs hurt. However, moving to SF changed all that, and after not wearing heels for 10 years, I am miserable in them. I've been easing back in via high heeled boots. :D

Pour La Victoire makes really nice shoes. For expensive stuff I also really like L'Autre Chose, Sam Edelman, Etro, and Guiseppe Zanotti.

One of the best pairs of ankle boots I've seen in a long time is this pair of Sam Edelmans:

Agreed. That's the problem with the "it" shoes - once they hit bloggerville, they explode. Everyone was wearing the Acne wedges, the Ash booties, Chloe Sevigny Buckle boots...which is why I like JC, they seem to do a lot of "knock-off types" but still be kind of original and cheaper.

Did you get the Mad Mary studded Loubs? Those are amazing :)

Love that second pair - cuff + vertabrae heel = genius. Sexy/Edgy.

Last pair of shoes I bought was JC 99s and that was November. I think that's a record for me. Think I might start selling some shoes on Ebay so I can get some extra cash - I have a retarded amount of shoes and on order to buy without guilt, I usually have to part with a few pairs. Either that or hit up Go Jane.

Do you have the name of them? My stomach has been bloated since I can remember...actually getting checked out for Crohn's just in case. And even when I lose a bunch of weight, the little pooch sticks around (though the pooch and my constant bloating are maybe not related).

Damn! I just threw a container out yesterday, although I still have the pills. The are called water pills, (I think). Go to the feminine section @ CVS, look for over the counter PMS stuff and you will find them in there. It will say no caffeine on the container. It's in a rectangular package, so you have to pop the capsule out individually.

I discovered "Hoarders", a reality show on cable. It has scared me into cleaning clutter! Seriously. I think I may be a mild level 1 hoarder. I'm in the process of moving and had to get rid of a large percentage of my stuff, I didnt realize I had so many shoes and clothes because they were shoved in the back of my closet.

This is really key for me, I think. I used to move a LOT, at least once a year, and while I kept a pretty large amount of clothes and records/cds, I didn't have a lot of other "things" that survived moves. When I moved to California, I had a studio apartment, and everything I owned fit into one room. However, now I have a big apartment and haven't moved in 7.5 years, so I haven't been forced to cull my possessions down to moving size. Moving now would be a disaster.

So, I don't feel like I need to keep things or even that I'll use them, and I don't have that notion that I shouldn't get rid of them because I'll need them someday and won't be able to buy them then. (Because, let's be real, I'll buy more stuff). HOWEVER, I get hung up on the waste of things. I don't want to just throw them away. I feel bad about the money I spent. So I convince myself that I need to sell them and recoup some of the money. I get cheap about it, when really, I should just donate the lot of it. And I never find the free time to deal with it.

I have been doing better about the shopping for the last several months though. :) I've purchased clothes but 100% of it is for work (business casual clothes, since it's been 10 years since I had to wear that sort of stuff), and I've been going to the library and using my kindle instead of buying more books.

this is long, sorry lol.

i have boxES of stuff. several. they take up an entire shelf in my closet. i also save much worse than that, every school assignment, every receipt (i have a bag of stuff to eventually shred one day, but then WHAT IF I NEED IT), i have a file box PACKED of important files that one day i finally got serious about cleaning out. i have a big tub of random computer and a/v cables/accessories that are probably either broken or go with something i no longer own. BUT WHAT IF I NEED IT. what if the apocolypse comes, we're all sequested in MY apartment for years to come and someone says "if i only had a cell phone charger for a samsung phone from 2000!"

i have an insane amount of shoes, including ballet shoes i haven't worn in 7 years and a pair of shitty pink heels that kill my feet too much to ever actually wear. then there's the PACKED closet of clothes. half of which don't fit me at this current time. there's a box of clothes at my parents for when i have kids and want to give them JNCOs to play with. there's clothes/jackets in THREE separate closets of my parent's house. and under my bed are boxes or clothes as well. along with my dressers....

i used to have an insane amount of makeup due to my mother giving me freebies from her department store. I DON'T EVEN WEAR MAKEUP EVER. along with lotion & perfume. i finally gave some of it to girls at my work and just threw the rest away because it was so old. my nightstand consists of hat boxes filled with all my crazy yarn hair, hat collection, excessive pairs of gloves & purses. dear god, i have a whole other tub of purses in my closet and even MORE bags in my bathroom closet.

and my storage unit... at the end of last month i had to play tetris with all the boxes i refuse to throw away. cause ya know, if my vacuum breaks i'm totally going to take the time to mail it to the manufacture who won't try to get out of fixing it at all.

it's amazing i lived out of one bedroom for three years. the movers were stunned.

I probably have most people here beat on the shoes situation. I actually have no idea how many pairs I have, but would have to guess at least 300. Probably more. I still have at least 100 in boxes from my last move which was more than half a decade ago, and I have no intention of getting rid of them. God, I love shoes. I was doomed, both my grandmothers were Imelda Marcos grade shoe hoarders, and even my dad had several dozen pairs of shoes. My brother, though straight, probably has at least 50 pairs.

Maybe it's just me, but I find shoe boxes to take up too much space. I found these fabric (made out of fabric) drawers at Home Depot that come in different colors and if you move, they collapse into flat squares.

And then there would be the question of 'Where to you put your stuff that was in those drawers that are now collapsed'?

I have these huge fishnet laundry bags. They hold a ton off stuff, seriously. Last time I went up to the snow, I had to pack extra gear for my friend. In two bags, I got all kinds of extra gear: a jacket, 2 pairs of snowboard pants, 2 helmuts, 5 hats, all kinds of knee pads, gloves, et.....and still had room.

Just a suggestion.

Chia, I'm agape with wonder. 300 pairs of shoes? I own nine. One pair black pumps, one pair black high heeled strappy dress shoes, one pair Italian suede-pigskin wedge-heel dressy sandals, one pair Birkenstock sandals, two pairs Birkenstock shoes (black for work, brown for everyday), one pair Teva flip-flops, one pair Teva low hikers/walking shoes, one pair Asolo full hiking boots.

All the clothes I own fit along 47" of closet rod and in five 14x22 in drawers. My husband has three times more clothes than I do, most of it bicycle related. Of course, if I had to maintain a professional wardrobe - which I don't - it would certainly be a different story. I think I need to find a happy medium somewhere between my ultra minimalist lifestyle and a chic excess I cannot afford.

If it isn't already painfully obvious to you all, I am the anti-hoarder. Hoarding scares me A LOT.

I always send things off to the thrift store. If I haven't worn it, used it, or even knew it existed within a reasonable amount of time, and if it is not in the category of basic personal or household need, it is gone. The kids have had quality stuff over the years which I have always given away directly (with the girls' permission of course) to friends with younger kids.

My mom complained once that I did this, and said I ought to at least sell the stuff I give away if I wasn't willing to keep it. Too much work in my book. I figure if someone needs something and you don't, why not let them have it? We've always managed to get what we needed over the years; seems only fair to pass it along.

Yeah, I love makeup primer. It's good enough to wear by itself with no covering - it smoothes everything out, makes you not shiny, and makes your pores look smaller. If you do choose to wear foundation or whatever over it it'll last longer than if you were wearing foundation alone.

i use sunscreen on my face. i can kinda undestand using eye-shadow maybe, that probably wouldn't get as messy as other forms of makeup. other than that, i just don't see the point. i also don't see how something like mascara or foundation doesn't rub off, but i also get kinda sweaty from dancing & jumping around pretty fast so maybe that's just me.

and i hate the idea of having layers of chemicals on my face just as much as the idea of the sun ruining my face, which is why i never wear makeup period. no matter how "good" the makeup is, i can still feel it on my skin and it's gross!!!!

I wouldn't wear a foundation to coachella just because it has sunscreen in it -- doesn't that type of sunscreen sweat off? You need to wear hardcore SPF 30+ non-sweating-off type sunscreen. AND REAPPLY throughout the day. And wear a hat.

yeah, i mean for me i need to reapply by the time i get in the gate. by the time i've left my hotel, sat in the car on the freeway to get to coachella, parked, walked to the entrance and waited to get in, a few hours seem to have gone by lol.

amy--I do, definitely, because I'm so fair. Literally my boyfriend and I reapplied our sunscreen last year every 30 minutes. I mostly wore the foundation because it's just part of my daily routine of application, since at 24 I still get zits and want to try to cover them up.

Good idea... I just hate feeling like I have an exposed face... maybe I'll let it tan enough to match my body and go no-makeup... lol

I generally don't let it get anywhere near the sun and just use self-tanner to even it all out..

I usually rock a tinted moisturizer with SPF and can recommend this one: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml;jsessionid=TK0IGF1CN4OUMCV0KQLQX0Q?i d=P210577&categoryId=C10550&shouldPaginate=true It's nice because you get a little coverage and can reapply it throughout the day.

ok, whew, I just wanted to make sure. Reapplying is key. I've also discovered I can't really wear tanks or anything that exposes my shoulders, back, or underarms because no matter how much I reapply, it's never enough and I get burned. (happened in 04 and 09)

I would like to cover up the dark circles under my eyes. They're not so bad when I have a little color in the summer, but in April I'll still be white as a ghost. I will probably just say fuck it, though, and just do sunscreen.

i'm such a wuss, even sunscreen feels gross on my face, but it's better than nothing. i'm terrified of sun damage, i think i have some damage above my upper lip. there's this small patch of skin that looks darker than everything else, it's gross.

I have that tinted moisturizer too but at Coachella I need to be wearing like, SPF 50. I am loathe to put other things on my face since it makes post-fest breakouts that much more awul, and sunscreen already makes me break out.

I've never had to reapply sunscreen at Coachella. I guess my line of thinking is that I am in tents (intense?) most of the time so I'm ok. I've never been burned, so I must be doing something right. I'm pretty fair skinned as well.

I'm spending my spring break in Santa Barbara and I'm going to try and sit out in the sun (with sunscreen on) every day so that my skin gets some color and can start to prepare for being in the sun at Coachella.

Hmm, see I tan easily so I don't really burn at all, just get like 20 shades of brown... I get these god-awful freckles right on the bridge of my nose and my cheeks though if I don't completely cover em up..

I have to use a concealor at least on my nose or i'll be a speckled egg after 3 days :)

yeah this is what I'm doing too... just spending a few hours every week on the beach so I've got a pretty deep base tan heading in... guess I'll try to tan my face a bit as well... (eek)

I don't tan at all. I'm white, and then I turn pink/red, and then I lose approximately 30 layers of skin and then I'm back to white.

Oh, shit, just remembered I'll be at the beach for Easter. I'll make sure to lay out.

What's wrong with freckles? I'm sure they look fine, if not cute.

I used to have a smattering of freckles across my cheeks and nose when I was younger. I still have a few but most are gone, which is kind of a pity because I think they're cute.

daxton, that's usually how it goes huh? lol

I've always been scared of getting dark freckles cause I had to have surgery to remove a freckle/mole-ish deal on my back b/c the doc wasn't sure about it... makes me nervous

...plus my momma pokes fun at me :( haha

Izzy has freckles across the bridge of her nose, and I so worry about her skin. It seems the damage while young is the worst in the long run.

I've gotten over being jealous of people that can tan. Now I'm jealous of fair skinned girls who haven't damaged their skin like I have. My mom tried to warn me but I was such a bad ass.

Yep, I basically lived in the sun when I was little, I'd just get really dark so my mom never thought much of it.

I'd make sure to keep sunscreen on her even if she just tans without burning... I've always had to have my freckles and one or two small moles checked.

I left my girl at a pool party for a birthday, advised the mom to reapply sunscreen to my daughter's face - which of course she did NOT do - and now my girl has these freckles across her nose. Adorable for now, but worrying for later. Lesson learned.
