but I'll never understand why medications can't be sold cheaply when they're so cheap to produce. Hell, even regulating the cost of generics would be better than nothing. It wouldn't help people get the latest drugs, but at least the most common prescriptions would be affordable.
name brands are so expensive because of the 10's of millions of dollars it costs to bring them to market.

Name brands are so expensive because it's possibly the single most corrupt industry on the planet, second perhaps only to fuel. In the smart parts of the Western world they don't have "name brand" fucking medications because medicine isn't something that should be profiteered. In Canada or Europe you get non brand name versions of the same exact chemicals, except over there they're as strong as they're supposed to be, whereas over here they intentionally make the generics weaker than name brands even though they supposedly contain the same ingredients.
chiapet
05-14-2009, 08:03 PM
Right, as I said, it wouldn't be so costly to make generics widely available. Pharmaceutical companies recover expenses by the time the patent on a new drug is up. They might as well move on to the next thing, and let us consume mass-produced generics at cheap rates.
JustSteve
05-14-2009, 08:07 PM
i have seen tons of ads for generics as low as $4 per fill at places like ralphs, cvs, costco, etc. doubt it is a comprehensive list, but probably covers a lot of the common drugs.
RotationSlimWang
05-14-2009, 08:17 PM
Right, you don't get the point though. In other actually advanced countries they don't have Valium or diazepam, they just have diazepam, because medicine isn't supposed to be broken down into high-priced Ralph Lauren medicine and cheap knockoff medicine. They make the fucking pharmaceutical countries make the generics right so there's no need to pay exorbitant prices just to get the true quality medicine you need.

05-14-2009, 08:39 PM
And you think it would be significantly better with OUR government running things? :)
Edited to add -- and that's what the argument IS. If the people in this country were really willing to support (in terms of public sector funding) pharmaceutical development in order to have cheaper prescriptions for everyone, we'd have it. I'm not sure that the majority of this country in terms of tax $$ sources wants that to happen. Because they already have health coverage.
RotationSlimWang
05-14-2009, 08:48 PM
A million times over, yes. I'm pretty damn satisfied with how they run the Fire Department, and aside from the corruption (which wouldn't be altered in any way by privatization) the Police service is pretty goddamned efficient. FBI's pretty good at what they do too. And the fact that the postal service delivers my letters with a near 100 percent success rate anywhere I want in the country within a matter of days is remarkable.
Yes. Yes I would. I would rather have that than doctors who spend 10 minutes with each patient because they're just doing it to get rich, or people being unable to afford medicine they need to live, or families financially crippled for life because of an injury.
Aspirin cost 8 dollars in a hospital. Each.

Randy, you realize that USPS is not truly a gov't agency, right? And Fire and Police are municipality based, not federal. I don't think our feds would run our health care like they run the FBI. Just my guess. :)

Not truly a government agency? Do you ever think before you open your fucking yap? Maybe at least, like, think about the fact that you're kinda dumb and so maybe you should at least Wikipedia something before you try to make a point.
Gee, great retort pointing out that necessarily local agencies like police and fire departments aren't federally run. I guess that the NHS doesn't have any kind of hierarchy that feeds down from the nationwide to city-by-city level, right?
You're right though. The federal government never does much right. It's not like they, oh I dunno, landed on the moon or anything. Or developed nuclear technology. Or just managed to rescue the country from a plummet into a complete and total economic collapse.

Becca, I used to use Yasmin, and kept having severe respiratory problems, over the course of 1.5 years, that went away like a week after I gave up on it. Very weird stuff. I kept going to the ER unable to breathe, they'd think I had blood clots but could not locate any, give me steroids, I'd get better, go home, and then the same thing would happen a month or two later. *shrug*

Yes -- I know 3 people who have had that happen, with no other risk factors besides BC. It's something I've been thinking about lately as I sit at a desk often for 10 hours a day without having many breaks to get up and move around.
I don't feel like I have other options though -- the risk is there with all hormonal birth control. Just condoms worries me a bit as I'm pretty serious in my desire to not have babies. I'm a little too young to be able to get doctor cooperation in permanently removing the possibility. :P

birth control pills are expensive if you don't have insurance and don't go to planned parenthood.
All I know is that if I buy my pills at the hospital, they cost $60; if i do mail-order through Kaiser, they are $20. (For a four month supply.)
I find that generally my skin behaves unless I forget to take off makeup and wash my face before falling asleep (which I admit happens more frequently than it should). Or if I go off my birth control -- then a volcano erupts on my face.
Same with the makeup thing...But my face reacts more to my period coming. Other than that, no pimples.
who the fuck is chris?
My boyfriend; definitely not to be confused with suprefan in any way, shape, or form.
Hrmmm. Birth control pills give me acne (thankfully not too severely), may I ask what you gals use that is making your skin better? I hear some pills are better than others in that regard.
I use Yasmin; not only did it clear up my acne, but it also has made me lose a good 20 lbs. Same thing happened to my friend who was also put on it.

Geez, I wish it had worked out for me. I wouldn't mind effortless weight loss. :)
I actually have very remarkably clear skin "normally", even when I was a teenager, so maybe I'm just being punished for all those years without trouble. Ever since I went back on bc I have had more or less constant zits in a couple of spots. It's just two zits. I'm not very vain about the actual zits. It's just that I think I'm going to end up with scars from from having acne in the same spot for like 9 months.

Just by my mouth (chin really). Pretty consistently. The only time I get any acne elsewhere is by my brow but that is inevitably due to makeup. Me too! And oddly stage makeup never gave me acne. ;) I actually liked it a lot. It felt gross, but from a distance of at least a few feet, everyone's skin looks perfect. Even guys with like horrible cystic acne looked clear skinned.
But yea I feel your pain in general, and would not wear foundation. I use powder, occasionally use a little bit of concealer (though I have no skill for this and it usually does not conceal so much as paints a beacon on my face saying "Look what we have here"), eye shadow, mascara, brow wax/powder, lip gloss.
Things I cannot abide: foundation, heavy powders, blush, lip sticks, lip pencils, eye liner* (I actually really like eye liner when other people put it on me but it looks gross when I do it myself).

I can't do my eyes well because my eyes are a bit droopy in the corners, so if I wear just a little too much or too dark eyeliner, I look freakish. But I usually don't wear makeup unless I go out, and sometimes not even then. When I did wear makeup in my earlier club days, I always tried to at least have nice dark red lipstick since I like my lips. Foundation just seems too fake for me, but with my skin, I probably need it. :/
I think if my eyes weren't so droopy maybe I would've tried harder and been better at it. I also dig the gold eyeshadow because it brightens up my hazelly blue eyes.

I don't like the thickness of lipstick either so I usually just do a dark lip liner and a tinted lip gloss to blend it in. I use whipped foundation to balance out my skin, then the mineral powder & bronzer, then dark eyes. I have shit brown eyes so I usually play on that with some brown shadow and eyeliner.
Cetiphil is a good cream to use, it is hypoallergenic and recommended by dermatologists but tends to be quite expensive.

When I was younger I would wear makeup to hide flaws or to look older. Now that I'm older, makeup seems to accentuate any flaws and certainly doesn't help remove the years of suntanning, squinting, and partying. Up until afew months ago, I would wear a light foundation, bronzer, eyeliner, and mascara, thinking that was as light as I could go. One of the girls at work recommended the Bare Minerals line of makeup, and although it was pricier than I was used to, she claimed I'd be amazed with the stuff. I got the starter package for $60. (2 brushes, powder foundation, blush, translucent finishing powder.) I learned real fast that alittle goes a long way and the way the minerals work together produces a natural makeup free look yet provides a hint of natural color. You can sleep with it on without worrying about breakouts, and if your perspire, it doesn't run or clog up your pores like normal makeup. The girl at the counter even said it was healthy for your skin because it provided coverage to protect from the sun and shit in the atmosphere without adding more shit from the minerals. Seriously, it takes 5 minutes to look human now and seems to get better as the day goes on. How many other brands do that?

Beall's Florida. I'd never heard of it but it showed up in an Amazon search. Only $30. Runs pretty true to size.
http://www.beallsflorida.com/r/Lola_P_Fitted_Sleeveless_Cotton_Sundresses_Misses_ Apparel/product?styleid=139835&
Edited to add, it's even cuter in person (there are some sequins and beads on the top part) and it's better than I expected for the price.

Yeah, I got it in white.
You gonna get all hot for our next outing?
Probably not, I don't think the zoo would be the best place for a white dress. I will most likely wear it to Holy Fuck though. And I think you should wear a three-piece suit.
None.
Terrible idea.

Weird, they looked more synthetic in the picture. I used to swear by cotton/spandex blend exercise shorts. I wore them with everything. But now I don't really like fabric against my skin in hot weather. I like boxers because they're loose but not so flappy that I'm showing anything if I sit down with my knees up or something. I'm not very modest, so it helps a lot

I used the Urban Decay eye primer for this, and it has held up at Coachella and at clubs. I just can't figure out how to get the large glitter to stay on. Primer didn't really work - if touched even lightly, it flakes off. I think that dancing, I'd end up with it all over the place and probably in my eyes.
Fortunately, if I only wear eye makeup, my skin does not complain. (I can't imagine trying to wear foundation or powder in humidity anyway). I really only wear eye makeup and gloss anyway and am terrible about taking it off at night. I only run into problems if I've just waxed brows that day.

I know I already rambled about it once but I have to reiterate how incredible this body paint is. Kryolan brand, I tried the metallic liquid body paint. It is spreadable when you put it on (so you can go completely opaque or do a thin layer), dries very quickly, and washed off very easy with a little soap.
It feels absolutely incredible on. I've never had body paint that didn't feel slightly sticky, or like my skin could not breathe.
I totally want to go back and get more colors now and walk around with my arms all painted up or something.

2. where do i find this body paint & glitter?
Well, I think the first step is a visit to Sf. ;)
The body paint and neon/UV reactive makeup are Kryolan:
http://www.kryolan.com/en/index.php
They have a store in SF, but their stuff is sold in various places... occasionally high end costuming or craft stores, theater/dance supply stores, some on the internet (I find stuff occasionally on eBay and have never been disappointed).
I can't rave about it enough, it's professional theater grade makeup and feels really nice on skin compared to any costume or theater makeup I've ever tried.

Okay so I'm glad I tried this out at home first, the unexpected result of the big glitter flakes was that the lotion lifted the dyes from them and I had pink stains that came off only after some scrubbing with alcohol.
Any idea where to find larger makeup grade glitter/sequins? I've only found really fine (small) glitter for makeup use.

It was a weird career move on their part to pick a name for their paint that is so close to Krylon.

I think both companies are fairly old (50+ years), Kryolan is German, and I'm sure companies back then didn't consider that they should (nor easily could) research to see if brand names already exist.

So far my dentist has not said I have any damage as a result of the ring but he did express his hatred for them.either from when I would sleep or while talking the underside would graze along the back of my front teeth which resulted in seperation of my gum from the tooth. My dentist says I'm at risk of loosing the tooth which would suck and I"m praying and keeping all my fingers crossed that doesn't happen but we are keeping a watch on it...approx $6000 repair...unfortunately my current employer doesn't have dental ins so I"m sitting tight for a bit...

[QUOTE=allyjoy;1268523]maybe you can just buy a bodice and sew the skirt/QUOTE]
^^ yes. So the bustier part is the most expensive - you'd get that part at fredericks or similar. Sometimes they go on sale for $20-40ish (normally would be more like $60-80).
The skirt part is just scraps of fabric. Probably less than $10 total. And hit a craft shop for the leaves or flower pieces. Probably another $5-10. Long feathers might be a little harder to find. But with some really simple sewing (or glue gun) and about $40-75 you could make this easily.
And ally, what I do is try them on at Nordstrom and then order them online whenever they go on sale various places. http://www.bravissimo.com/ is UK but the exchange rates are OK right now and some times they have great sales.

They do, but the Fredericks ones, while being cheap and not really "corsets", actually hold up pretty well. I have had some that I wore pretty often for like 4-5 years, which is more than I'd expect from them.
Here are the sorts that I had in mind for the costumes amy posted:

I was never very good at gymnastics, at least tumbling. I was always afraid of falling on my head.
We never had cartwheel contests. I do remember having contests on bars to see who could flip the most, not the most in a minute but longest, without stopping or getting dizzy. Heh.
And for some reason in HS we had a jump contest, who could do the most toetouches in a row (we let people do a prep between each, like a banana jump). That sounds like it would be short lived, maybe 2 or 3 at most, but we were insane. Anyway, I got really good at them and could do one after another, for like 10 minutes or however long it took me to run out of energy. Stopped needing to prep at all. (Could do a perfect jump from standing legs straight).
That is how I tore my patellar tendon. :P

Apparently on the way to work one day he stopped and found this complete wedding ensemble and had it hanging in his office. He wanted to see exactly what shape it was in and I got the opportunity to model it...which gave him the opportunity to make an instant sale. It's 2 pieces and the top alone was too cool to pass up. i can do a basic braid. mein turn out rather thick though. she did one of those braids where it's like attached on your head at either side. i know that sounds really retarded since all hair is attached to your head, but there are basic braids and then there are the kinds that seem to be tighter in your hair. perhaps those are french braids? i don't know, but it was a MUCH more professional braid than i could ever pull off. she did those kinds and even braided it ALL the way to the end, which i can never do.

Yeah, French braids. Those are pretty doable too, though - you just start out one section at the top and then add to the initial strands with the rest of your hair as you braid down. When my hair was a bit longer I'd pseudo-French braid the hair above my bangs to make a sort of headband.

That's a french braid, Ivy. I can do french braids and dutch braids now (dutch is in reverse). I want to learn how to do a crown french or dutch braid that goes around the head in a circle and a 5 strand braid next (I bought a DVD for this).

I've known how to french braid since i was in 3rd grade. 'bout 5 yrs ago I finally learned how to french braid my own hair...
I know how to fishbone but only the pony tail part against the head looks like 4 strans...I don't think I have the coordination...

I can do the fishbone/herring bone/whatever you want to call it too. And I also taught myself how to do a french braid years ago. The problem is, my long hair is layered now because it looks better on me when my hair is down, but it's hard to braid it all up this way--it pokes out.
