Haha, I agree. It's all about those facial fur markings that make her look like she has angry eyebrows.

But I'm sure she's a sweetheart.

Rocky does that too... he'll fall asleep on shoes/slippers/flip flops, whatever. I think a part of it is the scent... not of feet necessarily, but that it smells like their owners. So in a f'd up way it gives them a sense of security.

As of late, I've been seeing a lot of Huskies around Seattle. I know, go figure...but they're still a treat to see.

Here's a wacky iphone pic of Tristan, wherein his front left leg looks all noodlefied:

Maybe this is random -- does anyone know good hotel chains (or good single hotels) that allow small pets? I know that La Quinta does, so I try to stay there when I go to Disneyland. My question is non-specific, any city.
AAA offers lists of pet friendly hotels and motels. there is a Hyatt or Sheridan in long beach that actually has daycare for your pets. Google also will give you destination appropriate options. I have 3 Shih-Tzus and I am crazy in love with them.

Tristan is definitely moving with us. We are still in the process of finalizing the details of when exactly we are moving this Summer, but we do know that he has a 17hr car ride in his future :p However, we have him crate trained and he is used to both car rides and plane rides, so much so, that we don't even drug him anymore. He will definitely voice is displeasure at the length of the ride, but I'm sure he'll do fine :)

YESSSS THIS PICTURE. SO FUZZY.

The people we got him from were very allergic and used to bathe him once a day. When we got him we continued the trend, but now bathe him every other week, which keeps him clean and as soft & fuzzy as can be. Also, he doesn't mind it so much, it's just the hairdryer that he has issue with ;)

DUKE: he was more of a brother to me than my own brother. He was in my life from age 1 to 15. He was the best dog ever. We had to put him down but he lived the fullest life ever.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n302/karinahalle/random/BRACEFACEandDuke.jpg

Ellie: she was like the sister I never had. Was in my life from 1993 to 2008. In 2008 my mother and her were hit by a car in PALM SPRINGS - my mother was OK, though injured, but Ellie died.

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n302/karinahalle/random/Wowallmyphotos2581.jpg

The paramedics actually said Ellie saved my mom's life.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n302/karinahalle/Ellie3.jpg

Muffin: My mom adopted her. She was an old dog (at least 8) but she had a loving home with my parents for 9 months.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n302/karinahalle/random/Wowallmyphotos3929.jpg

She died. Also in Palm Springs, ironically. In front of my eyes, at the vet. We never knew she was sick. This still hurts the most to this day. I feel so bad that we never knew she was that sick. She was so sweet and trusting and so happy to be rescued and have a loving home *tear*

Here's when my mom and her first met in the rescue shelter - love at first sight:

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n302/karinahalle/random/Wowallmyphotos1130.jpg

The only dog in my life that's still alive and well is Moe, my boyfriend's dog. He's a spazz and a grump but I still love him:

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n302/karinahalle/random/Wowallmyphotos4912.jpg

I'm super sad now so excuse me while I go smoke a joint.

Yeah, my little girl isn't too bright sometimes, but shes cute as hell. hahaha. She picks things up pretty quick if you teach her, but then her bulldog comes out and says, nah, fuck you I'm not doing that. It kills me. It's pretty funny to see the difference between her not listening and bulldogging.

So, I went down to look at the pigs today since the females are all spayed and they are all ready to be picked up. The one I had bid on has about 3-4 other bids on her as well and before I could sign the paperwork one of the lesser-bid runts caught my eye. There was one pig out of the whole litter that didn't have a single bid on her because she was more spotted than the other pigs. I want to know if I should take her home. Nobody wants her and I think she is adorable.

Here's one of her closer to birth:
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1498/picture14ed.png

Here's how pretty she is now:
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/4311/picture15cbd.png

She has the longest and sweetest eye lashes of any of the pigs there and apparently has the sweetest disposition.

I want the board's opinion before I sign the paperwork but I think I need this pig and I'm pretty sure she needs me.

Courtney

Out of curiosity, what is the appeal of having a pig as a pet over something more traditional like a dog or cat?

weeklymix
09-20-2010, 04:49 PM
They can be trained easier, a dog the same size would likely be yippie and need 100x more exercise and I'm allergic to cats / hate them.

Edit: They also live about as long as cats, but act more like loyal / quiet big dogs. 12-17 years and they're very lovey. Some folks have even had healthy mini pot bellied pigs last 25+ years. They can be trained to go outside or use a litter box, etc. Kind of versatile.

On the pig - is that a pot-bellied or pygmy variety? I vote yes. Super adorable.

I grew up in a rural area, and one of my neighbors had a pet pig. That thing was a beast though, like 500 lbs or something and I remember it being taller than I was. Definitely not an indoor pet. It was sweet though, and they're very smart animals.

I missed this the first time around. I had a pet pig for about 7 years, and she started out sweet and would sit in my lap, but she got quite big, well over 100 lbs. She also became too aggressive (charging people, and she bit Jacob once) and destructive in the yard -- digging up all our sprinklers, eating up the strawberry patch, rubbing up against these wooden columns for the back patio roof, etc. Just make sure you go into this with your eyes wide open. Pigs can be trained, but you must make sure you give your pig a food treat every time s/he does the trick correctly because they will not do anything without a food treat.

Also, they can be incredibly loud if frightened, louder than jets taking off.

We had to give her away to a farm that wanted pot-bellied pigs as pets because of the aggression thing. It got to where I couldn't feel comfortable sitting near her because she would attempt these sneak attack charges all the time freaking me out.

Yeah I've heard of some of the issues with them but all animals can have similar problems with aggression. These are mini pigs and generally have sweeter temperaments than larger pot bellied pigs. Some of these that I'm looking into don't get larger than 18 pounds and I'm going to make sure she's exposed to a lot of people (not like in a house party setting by any means, but you get what I'm saying). The farm I'm getting my eventual pig at spays early and keeps them around people all the time. Just luck of the draw with any animal really, hopefully I get a sweetie.

Yikes, 18 lbs? Are you sure the adults are healthy (and actually adults)? That seems smaller than pigs can actually be. Damn, I'd want one that small. Much easier to manage. Good luck to you Zack; I hope you find one and it works out well.

I've loved pigs since I was a child which is why I eventually got one, but I think mine might have been part "regular" pig along with the pot-bellied part.

We had to put Robin to sleep on Monday evening. He was 14 years old and lived a long and happy life, and got in more travel (from Saudi Arabia to New York to Hawaii) than many humans do in a lifetime. He was suffering from a degenerative spinal condition at the end, so putting him to sleep was the right thing to do. But it still wasn't easy.

He was a good dog, and I miss him.

Thanks guys. I think that pet loss is interesting, from a sort of neutral perspective. Pets by their very nature live shorter lives than us, so losing a pet is part and parcel of having a pet. For me, that makes pet ownership a very bittersweet thing: the specter of loss is always looming.

Although of course I wish that beloved pets could live forever, I think that looming end also makes the time we have together all the more sweet and special. On some level, we know that we have to savor every moment, because each moment is so fleeting.

I'm just saying, there are so many things that could happen to you while he's hanging out the window like that. From a rock being kicked up from a car in front of you and hitting him in the face to you hitting a bump or pothole and him flying out the car. You know, all the things responsible pet owners should think about.

Not to mention you paying attention to your camera so you can get a cute picture instead of watching the road.

Rocky and Scooter...

It's tough to get good pics of Scoot because he just shows up as a black blob most of the time. Rocky is bigger, but he's a wuss. Scooter is the ass-hole in charge, and just wants to play ball to fuck with Rocky lol.

Also, that carpet looks like a problem waiting to happen with two dogs in the house and fall/spring muddy weather.

fiopadp7791
02-18-2011, 04:40 PM
There's plenty of tile they have to walk through to get to that carpet... When they go outside one of use always has some old rag or towel que'd up to wipe off their paws... that and a lot of times we just leave them in the basement until they dry out a little.

Puppy Survives Euthanasia At Dog Shelter

March 03, 2011
An Oklahoma animal clinic said it was looking for a home for a puppy found alive in a dumpster after undergoing euthanasia.

Officials said the puppies were left on the shelter's doorstep and euthanized because they appeared to be very sick. They were all checked out and declared dead by a veterinarian before being put in the dumpster.

Animal Control Officer Scot Prall said that the puppy is in good health. The animal clinic has received calls from all over the world from animal lovers wanting to adopt the brave little puppy.

This article painfully illustrates the need for dog and cat owners to spay and neuter their beloved pets. This puppy was abandoned along with its litter mates by an owner who failed to fix his dog.

"I hope that the puppy, named Wall-e after the title character in the movie, finds a loving home."
I just heard on the local news here that the pup has MULTIPLE adoption offers. Cuteness wins (and this little bugger is very, very cute).

(ps - emphasis by me. And, that was not directed at anyone in particular, just pumping a good practice)

daxton
03-03-2011, 11:07 AM
Put me down for pro spay/neuter. I had nothing to do with these precious puppies being conceived. But, I'm so thankful I was visiting when they were born. And I'm staying at his house an extra 7 weeks just to take care of them. Thanks Dad!

Cali, she will actually fetch and bring it back. If Sampson has a toy, he wants you to chase him. Cleo is more like Sampson, though sometimes she'll give up her toy. We've had Cali for like 14 months now, so we've been able to train her fairly well.

This is my bird Einstein, he's a African Grey.I have had him since i was seventeen and got him from a lesbians couple who work in the DEA(who taught him to say White Power! :( ).My favorite thing is i have taught him is to say "derka derika"(from Team America). What most people get a laugh about is when I'm/we are smoking, Einstein will cough sometimes not because he needs to cough but because he smells what I'm smoking and has heard me done it.Another amazing thing he does is say good bye to me when I leave thru the front door of my house and some times says it to my guest. He can be annoying although he has learned how to do the fire alarm and uses that sound to get my attention. He also copies other noises from my house when i'm going around with my own bussiness if he sees me for example i have a cabinet that will squeak for my glasses and he will do the creeeek sound or if i'm picking up the house phone he will say hello.

getbetter
03-07-2011, 12:36 PM
He use to have a bunch of bright redish tail feather and loves to plucker those feathers. Most of the time the reason a parrot is a plucker is due to not getting enough attention from their true owner(the person that the bird only trusts) ,boredom, and stressful conditions.I wish to get more of his red feathers to grow out although i have tried extra speical diets with more minerals ,giving him a extra 45 minutes of a attention a day, giving him a lot of disposable toys that he can rip apart and have had no luck and gave up on it.I usually just take him into the shower with me so the stream relieves his stresses and gives me a head start of giving him attention for the day.

yeah i'm a big pet lover i got four other animals i'll take photos of later today.

Haha! They are really pretty cool if you get to know them. They each have their own personalities just like us.

My Senegal parrot is so two faced. He could be the absolute most loving bird in the world, but in a split second he could turn into the world's biggest little bitch. He has some major anger issues. He absolutely HATED me for the first 3-4 months when our family adopted him, but now all he wants to do is be with me. This turns into a problem when I am eating (he bites my face), or when I need him to get off so I could go to work (once again, he bites me).

My bird like to bite my hair and look at my mouth when he's on my shoulder.

Red Tibetan Mastiff: World's Most Expensive Dog Sells for $1.5 Milli

Mar 16th 2011 at 12:35PM

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2011/03/red-tibetan-mastiff580-1300291494.jpg

A coal baron living in northern China just spent $1.5 million to buy what is considered the world's most expensive dog (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/16/tibetan-mastiff-most-expensive-dog-big-splash_n_836405.html), a red Tibetan Mastiff (http://www.luxist.com/2009/09/11/tibetan-mastiff-sells-for-around-600-000/). It's hard to know precisely where in that sentence you spurt out your mouthful of coffee: that a dog (http://www.pawnation.com/2011/03/10/pet-product-review-dyson-groom-tool/) is worth that much or that there is a millionaire willing to buy one in China.

In any case, the 180-pound 11-month-old red Tibetan Mastiff (http://www.pawnation.com/2010/07/12/vienna-is-the-latest-city-to-crack-down-on-dangerous-dog-breed/) known as Big Splash, or "Hong Dong" in Mandarin, just earned the title of the world's priciest pooch. The breed can grow to be 285 pounds, and according to the breeder, Big Splash is such a perfect specimen that the eyeball-popping price is justified. It is believed the breed descended from wolves 58,000 years ago.

Big Splash is a kind of cute fellow -- big and bulky, although in most photos he looks like he's having a bad hair day. The breed has become a status symbol in China (http://www.luxist.com/tag/most+expensive+dog/), replacing cars and expensive bling as a way for the uber-rich to show off their new-found wealth. Red is considered a lucky color in Chinese culture and Tibetan Mastiffs are thought to be holy animals, bringing riches and good health to their owners, which helps explain the country's interest in the dog and the run-up in price. But given the size of most Chinese apartments and the size of these dogs, don't expect to see them bought by the masses; Tibetan Mastiffs are truly only for China's rich.

In time, Big Splash might fetch $15,000 a pop to breed with a female. Nothing like earning his keep.

(Geez, is it bad that after reading the article again, I'd settle for borrowing $15,000? lol)
