24 DJs had the opportunity to spin Coachella with one catch, they had to recruit festival goers to generate energy to power their set. Last year we broke ground with this new program. Our goal in 2012 was to raise the bar a few notches and see if we could actually make the jump. Thanks all to everyone involved behind the scenes, we crossed the bar with no problems. The crown jewel of the Energy Playground was the Energy Swing supported by the second generation Energy Well, Hamster Wheels, Hand Cranks, See Saws and twice the number of Energy Bikes. The lines weren’t too long to use any of the re-engineered playground equipment so everyone had the opportunity to support the DJ sets.

Coachella Music & Arts Festival and Global Inheritance are confirming artists to participate in the TRASHed exhibit taking place this April in Indio, California. Founded in 2004, the TRASHed :: Art of Recycling program is an interactive art walk on the Coachella grounds that encourages festival goers to recycle using redesigned recycling bins designed by artists from around the world.
50 artists will be selected to design a 65 gallon recycling bin for the festival in 2012. These recycling bins will be on display during both Coachella weekends and then donated to a local school in the Coachella Valley.
A TRASHed Coachella art exhibit will take place in Los Angeles before all the redesigned recycling bins are shipped to the festival grounds. All artists will receive a festival pass for the weekend of their choice plus the opportunity to have their artwork displayed and promoted on the Coachella and Global Inheritance websites.

10 for 1 Recycle TRASHed Recycling Centers At Coachella
One More Good Reason To Save Bottles/Cans From A Life In Landfill
The 10 for 1 Bottle Exchange outposts were recently remodeled for expansion to include TRASHed Recycling Centers. These dazzling new centers be an oasis in the middle of the desert, providing you with refreshing bottles of water, as well as sunscreen, shirts, posters, VIP wristbands, deluxe showers, refillable Coachella water bottles, Coachella 2013 tix plus much more! Help keep Coachella clean and we will reward you for your efforts!
All you need to do is pick up bottles/cans found on the festival grounds and exchange these recyclables for points at one of the recycling centers. Recycling centers will only accept bottles/cans found in their areas (either the camp grounds or festival grounds). Individuals found guilty of transporting recyclables across the border or illegally in their cars will have their wristband/arm fed to the Robotic T-Rex.
If you're only looking to cash in 10 empty bottles/cans for a cold bottle of water, remember to get into the recycling express line.

T-Rex Fasting In Honor Of Coachella
Recyclosaurus Rex is currently training in the high desert in anticipation for Coachella 2012. This 20 ft high, half robot/half dinosaur, will be roaming the Coachella festival grounds looking for hand outs. His diet is empty is bottles/cans...and shady individuals. A well fed T-Rex is a happy one, so remember to come by with an offering of bottles/cans. We are anticipating one fat T-Rex after the two sold out festivals. To help with his waistline, we are integrating a digestive system that will allow him to take giant square T-Rex droppings. The person who comes up with the best idea on how to use the dino-droppings onsite will receive a special Coachella prize pack. Each dropping will be similar in size to a bale of hay.

In its 8th year, TRASHed Coachella proved once again that a 65 gallon recycling bin can be turned into a masterpiece. All the artists competing this year did an outstanding job. We had an extremely difficult time picking the 25 finalists. On April 7th, we hosted a special art showing for the artists, press and students from the Coachella Valley Unified School District. All of the students were able to see the collection of redesigned recycling bins before they traveled to Coachella. The bins now reside in their school hallways and classrooms.

When there’s a sold-out music festival in the Coachella Valley, water bottles are in high demand. The 10 For 1 Bottle Exchange returned to the Empire Polo Fields to help keep the venue clean and the festival-goers hydrated. In addition to the 10 For 1 Bottle Exchange, you could also fill your water containers at public drinking fountains and hydration stations. Look out for new ideas in 2012. Thanks to everyone who helped keep the polo fields pristine!

DJ’s around the world battled for the chance to spin the Energy FACTory DJ Mixer. Thousands applied but only a few had the right combination of music/muscular friends. Every DJ pushed their friends and fans to give a herculean effort to power their sets in the polo fields by interacting with hamster wheels, bikes, see saws and hand cranks. Each of these devices generated energy to fuel the DJ’s equipment. All the devices were connected to an energy well that served as the stage’s main power supply.

Getting TRASHed at Coachella is always the right move. This ongoing recycling education program (starting with Coachella 2004) redefines the way people view recycling and trash collection by redesigning recycling bins to inspire festival goers.
Global Inheritance arranges the artistic redesign of recycling bins, and then integrates the bins at events to encourage recycling and provide additional ways to view the artwork. Live paintings often occur at events, while bins designed and created by artists beforehand are also featured. Through a network of over 7,000 artists, TRASHed appoints the right talent to match each event's aesthetic. Canvases are not limited, as TRASHed: Art Of Recycling artists also design bottles, compost bins, and oversized recycling containers in addition to recycling bins.

Leave no bottles behind. The polo fields were void again of any rogue bottles and cans thanks to motivated/thirsty festival goers and the 10 for 1 program. This program rewards individuals with a cold bottle of water if they bring in 10 empty bottles/cans. Thanks again to everyone who made this program a success and for keeping the festival grounds clean.

Global Inheritance pulled up in style to Coachella with 7 tricked out alternative energy golf carts, each one redesigned to represent a popular musician or band from Paul McCartney to Amy Winehouse. This year, the Energy Factory combined these titans of the community to deliver 18 & and Up… the first ever renewable energy customized Golf Cart collection. These Golf Carts were powered by wind, solar, biodiesel, ethanol, and liquid petroleum gas. All carts showed the crowd a few different ways to cruise and view alternative energy sources.

Although we haven't flown paper planes since college, we decided to put our flying skills to the test with Recycled Paper Plane Shoot Out. By reusing paper in the Goldenvoice production offices, festival attendees were able to engineer flying apparatuses and test their aim for the chance to win big prizes. The top score received the chance to see Miss.Paper Plane herself (MIA) on stage.

The 2008 Energy FACTory offered the latest and greatest in renewable energy sources. Under the shade of a 45-foot-tall wind powered clock tower built using recycled metal and bamboo, festival goers experienced a variety of interactive exhibits including bike charging misters and cell phones, live screen printing on organic shirts, solar powered mannequins, biodiesel workshops, a solar powered DJ sound system + more. Check out the fun:
Tour De Coachella: A firsthand display of human energy generated by riding in the Tour De Coachella. A variety of different types of cell phone chargers were available along with 12 specially designed bikes that were used to power cell phones. People could also cool off under the hot sun by riding bikes that generated energy to power fans.
“Make It Yourself”: Vegetable oil to biodiesel conversion showcased what’s possible when you work with festival vendors and turn excess vegetable oil into fuel. This energy was integrated into the Clock Tower to power the Clock turn table.
Apollo’s Posse: Seven mannequins each designed to represent a different era of music, artist or genre. Every Mannequin had its own personal stereo system powered by solar shoulder bags that included iPod minis with their own playlists. On a larger level, a solar DJ sound system played through the day and into the night as festival goers partied with Apollo and the ultra violet rays.
Live Screen Printing: T-shirt junkies could pick through a variety of original designs all printed on organic shirts featuring everything from organic cotton to bamboo. People could also add prints to existing shirts to recycle their current look.

Global Inheritance teamed up with Amtrak, Goldenvoice and the City of Indio to organize a train from Union Station in downtown Los Angles to Coachella. The train was free to campers who RSVP'd. All train riders were treated to a live DJ set by Junkie XL, free ice cream and VIP wristbands for all three days. It really does make sense to take the train! Take a look at the ride:

If you were at Coachella, you probably checked out the 10-for-1 bottle exchange program. By recycling 10 used bottles, festival attendees could earn 1 brand new bottle of water. It's easy on the pocket book and great for the environment. Look at all the bottles!

In 2006 Global Inheritance turned the most loathed mainstay of event culture – the portable toilet – into portals that explore important local and global issues.
Portal Potties provided the perfect platform to take people back in time or into the future to see what has happened and introduce them to what is possible. People are too often surrounded by cluttered messages; through Portal Potties we aimed to generate attention by providing the facts through unconventional means that will stir the creative minds of those interacting with the exhibit. Each porta-pottie was painted by a team of well-known artists and equipped with hi-fi speakers and flat screens to deliver a story. Check them out!

Art of Recycling: TRASHed represented at Coachella this year with 35 recycling/trash stations around the main festival grounds and back stage. Each station was equipped with signage directing people to the trash or recycling bins. Talented artists from up and down the west coast designed the recycling bins, while trash bins were left blank.
Still the largest TRASHed exhibit to date, artists from the United States designed recycling bins. In just our second year of TRASHed, we expanded the gallery to 110 bins! Artists worked hard, we worked hard, and the Earth benefited. Take a look at the collection:

In the inaugural year of the TRASHed: Art of Recycling program, Global Inheritance partnered up with Anthem Magazine to snatch 10 recycling bins in Southern California and distribute them to a handful of talented artists. These recycling bins were a huge hit and paved the way for an even larger collection the following year. Global Inheritance was still operating under the name of FASHION PEACE at the time. Review the display in all its glory.
