Art of 2014

2squared

Artist: Charles Gadeken
2squared
Located:   Venue

2SQUARED is a pair of two 50′ tall obelisks made out of square steel tubing and 2000 cast polyurethane cubes with inset full-color LEDs. Each cube is geometrically arranged to create a 40′ canopy that provides shade by day and light by night.

The LED programming focuses on big color fades in bold hues, jaded fractal transformations,  and patterns that change based on sensory input and interactive controls. The two obelisks interact with each other, displaying sequences and patterns in a paired visual harmony.

This work is an abstracted organic form, bold and rigid, with mathematical aesthetics.

Artist: Robert Bose
Balloon Chain
Located:   Venue

Q:  Have the clowns gone mad yet again?
A:  YES THEY HAVE!

Spherical vessels of noble gas dot the skies above the polo grounds, rising and drifting in the wind, anchored to balloon wranglers whoroam the fields of green.

The shape and direction of the balloon lines change throughout the day and night, reacting to the dynamic direction and speed of the airpassing above.

Care to feel the power and grace of the balloons yourself?  Feel freeto ask a balloon wrangler for your own opportunity to get up close and personal with the balloons.

Becoming Human

Artist: Christian Ristow
Located:   Venue

The sculpture was inspired by robot drawings Christian has done for his young son, and also by the children’s book “The Story of Ferdinand”, in which a bull would rather smell flowers than fight.  Beyond these initial inspirations, the piece also has multiple layers of meaning such as the interplay between technology and nature, the rapid humanizing of robots, and the importance of slowing down to appreciate the little things.

Cryochrome

cryochrome2

Artist: James Peterson
Located:   Venue

Cryochrome. Loosely translated, the name means “frozen colors,” and that’s exactly what participants in this interactive, large-scale sculpture can expect: an exploration of what happens when an ice cave and a kaleidoscope are merged into a rotating portal, transporting festival-goers to another world.

The first of its kind at Coachella, Cryochrome beckons viewers from afar with a shimmering, mirage-like surface that seems to glow from within. Participants then enter the sculpture for a near-psychedelic, immersive experience inspired by the ice caves of Russia. Cool temperatures refresh participants as they traverse a 30-foot pathway surrounded by spinning walls, which glisten with iridescent illumination.

Artist: Poetic Kinetics
Located:   Venue

Escape Velocity was inspired by the hope that today’s youth will embrace space exploration as a solution to the many problems we face today. Poetic Kinetics is known for making big, uplifting iconic art that engages the audience. Smartbird

Artist: Festo
Smartbird
Located:   Venue

Inspired by the herring gull, this engineering marvel demonstrates how nature provides new inspiration for advanced automation technology With Smartbird, the engineers of Festo’s Bionic Learning Network have succeeded in deciphering the flight of birds – one of the oldest dreams of mankind. Constructed of carbon fiber and polyurethane foam, SmartBird only weighs 450g (~ 1lb) yet has a wing span of 2 meters (~6.5 feet). It can start, fly and land autonomously – with no additional drive mechanism. This technology bearer is a prototype that travels the world, demonstrating how principles from nature provide clues for technical applications and industrial practices.

Giant Green Caterpillar

caterpillar

Artist: Mike Grandaw
Giant Green Caterpillar
Located:   Venue

The Giant Green Caterpillar was conceived as a cool, shady place to hang-out. Something that looks natural, is made natural and feels natural. A place to cool off, cool out, and enjoy where you can meet up with old Coachella friends or make new friends. The living skin of the sculpture brings it to life… the people on the inside give it a heartbeat. The music, the plants, the lights, the mist, the shade…the time of your life.

Lightweaver

Artist: Stereo-bot
Lightweaver
Located:   Venue

The #LIGHTWEAVER is the next generation of fusion between architectural study, interactive multimedia and dynamic lighting. #LIGHTWEAVER is a 24 hour kinetic sculpture interplaying natural and artificial light against a curvilinear knotted frame. Towering 45 feet tall with a diameter of 75 feet, its bold coloration is contrasted by complex shadow lines wrapping the structure and silhouetting intricate shade patterns in the ground. At night, #LIGHTWEAVER becomes a spatial canvas brought to life by OBSCURA’s light and sound score, a multimedia experience challenging the comprehension of temporal and spatial dimensions.

Reflection Field

Artist: Philip K. Smtih III
Reflection Field
Located:   Venue

Working in color, light, space, and form, Philip K. Smtih III creates deceptively simple objects of contemplation, transformation,  and interaction.

“Reflection Field” merges the ideas of his recently  acclaimed installation, “Lucid Stead”, with the paced, color merging of his formally pure Lightworks series.   By day, the monumental mirrored volumes are prisms of earth and sky,  wrapped by the surrounding environment. By night, they become  monolithic fields of color that blend and layer through echoes of  reflection. Spaces become simultaneously infinite and finite, while hues push and pull, saturating and dissolving the surroundings and your periphery into pure color.

ARCHETYPES

archetype1

Artist: Keith Greco
Located:   Camping

ARCHETYPES is a series of individual architectural structures that attempts to reduce the concept of HOUSE to alphabet like symbols.

Juxtaposed, the houses line both sides of the thoroughfare in Coachella camping.  With no real narrative relation, this street of suites is meant to comment on a pattern of thought.  While some of the structure are built full size, others are oversize &  still others are almost miniatures of the inspirations they strive to emulate. Experienced as a whole they are Coachella’s own Main Street, viewed individually they are a surreal walk down Memory Lane.

ARCHETYPES

Artist: Brent Spears/Shrine
Located:   Camping

My name is Brent Spears but I am better known as Shrine.  I survived a near fatal motorcycle accident when I was 18 and a near fatal high speed collision at 47 years old.  The 29 years in-between have been spent raising kids, learning, loving, making art, staying inspired.  I’ve taken steps forward and backward as life is always a work in progress. I became an artist sitting and drawing in my grandmother’s kitchen.  Although those kitchens are long gone I’m still diligently watching lines come out of my hand, still excited to practice a ritual that takes me home and gives my life meaning.  My journey continues, each moment of self expression leading to the next, and so it goes.

Sidewinder

sidewinder

Artist: Abigail Portner
Located:   Camping

Sidewinder uses the most basic components of festival construction in a new and innovative way. The installation uses geometric patterns and combines them with the more organic natural form of the snake. The colors on each side of the snake represent the California desert at dawn and dusk when the sun makes the desert landscape the most beautiful.

Paraiso

Artist: Raices Cultura
Located: Camping

Enjoy the colors and vibrancy of the desert in this Coachella pop-up photo oasis as interpreted by the youth artists of Coachella, Ca. The rhythm and patterns of this display reflect what can be seen when we take notice of what the Coachella Valley desert has to offer, as both a place of abundance and at the same time, the illusion of a desert Oasis. Road Trip

roadtrip

Artist: Don Kennell
Located:   Camping

Are you connected? Sitting in this righteous porch swing is a ride into the post-apocalyptic funhouse where giant roadrunners ask, “Friend or foe?” Your connection to the natural world becomes explicit even as the situation remains ambiguous. The contemplative space of the swing provides a moment of repose, a social space, to investigate one’s own connection to the wild. Be on the look out in onsite camping.

InTentCity

Artist: Teale Hatheway
Located:   Lake Eldorado Camping

Teale Hatheway is a mixed media painter working on the subjects of architecture, memory and visual awareness by creating puzzling paintings of familiar places. For Coachella 2014, Teale has muralized 53 canvas teepees in an inversion of her art practice which gives three dimensional form to ornate and nuanced designs. The atmospheric imagery of InTentCity offers a visually challenging way for participants to find unique markers in a “city” of homogenous structures. InTentCity is located in the Lake El Dorado camp ground and along the promenade between the polo field and general camping.
